WASHINGTON – The U.S. declared a public health emergency Sunday to deal with the emerging new swine flu, much like the government does to prepare for approaching hurricanes.

Officials reported 20 U.S. cases of swine flu in five states so far, with the latest in Ohio and New York. Unlike in Mexico where the same strain appears to be killing dozens of people, cases in the United State have been mild — and U.S. health authorities can't yet explain why.

"As we continue to look for cases, we are going to see a broader spectrum of disease," predicted Dr. Richard Besser, acting chief of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "We're going to see more severe disease in this country."

At a White House news conference, Besser and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano sought to assure Americans that health officials are taking all appropriate steps to minimize the impact of the outbreak.

Top among those is declaring the public health emergency. As part of that, Napolitano said roughly 12 million doses of the drug Tamiflu will be moved from a federal stockpile to places where states can quickly get their share if they decide they need it. Priority will be given to the five states with known cases so far: California, Texas, New York, Ohio and Kansas.

Napolitano called the emergency declaration standard operating procedure — one was declared recently for the inauguration and for flooding. She urged people to think of it as a "declaration of emergency preparedness."

"Really that's what we're doing right now. We're preparing in an environment where we really don't know ultimately what the size of seriousness of this outbreak is going to be."

This is pretty scary to me.

How soon would DCL have make a decision to skip a port & choose an alternate route? Although this is a scary situation; it may not even effect our cruise or its route. We all just need to keep our fingers crossed!!

I wonder if DCL cancels Cozumel if we could switch our dophin swim to their GC location? Dolphin Discovery opended a new site there recently. But then we might not be able to do the Pirate cruise. May just have to eat a 10% loss.

I thought if you book through DCL, as long as you do it within the 24 or 48 hour cancel ( I can't recall which) you can cancel and get Full refund?

I hadn't really made the connection about us possibly going to cozumel and the swine flu. This year may be the year I get insurance! If disney decides to change our itinerary, what would be the alternatives?

Welcome to the group!! The more the merrier! Join right in and make yourself at home. We have a really friendly and helpful group here so ask anything you want to know, someone will help get you an answer.

As the alternatives if Cozumel is skipped, that is an unknown. From what I have been reading on other threads, this announcement might not be made until we cruise. They would announce the change in itinerary around departure time and give guest at that time a chance to schedule excursions at the new stop. There seems to be plenty of guesses about what alternate stops would be made or if another sea day would be added. What ever it is I'm sure we'll all have a lot of fun!

you can walk right through the parking lot to Kelsey's. It tends to be crowded. Now I wish we were staying there to meet everyone, but we are using points at AKL.

Kelsey's was good. there is also a Greek restaurant on the other side, McDonald's across the street and a subway within walking distance.

figures the time we do not stay at the Radisson there will be a shuttle launch. Be sure to sign up as soon as you cna for the shuttle to the port. It fills up quickly.

We will NOT be getting off in Cozumel if this outbreak continues. DCL would be smart to change ports because very few will get off with this concern. We booked the dolphin swim through DCL, so will cancel that when it gets closer and book somewhere else.

We signed up for shuttle when we booked the room a couple months ago

I think the pool at the Radisson is a great idea. We are staying at the CI&S but I think they are close and I will have a car to cart my bunch over. Will the Radisson not mind the extra people?

I don't think Radisson would even notice....... We had a big meet by the pool last time and Kelsey delivered pizza to all of us There were about 10 families last cruise and the kids had a blast and got to know each other pretty fast. Also since so many rest. are so close I am fine with whatever is near
