55+ communtities in NJ?

My MIL and FIL are moving back up from Florida. I am trying to help them find a place - or at least give them some thoughts.

They are on a limited budget. So in the 100-160K range is what they are looking for.
I have no ideas. All the places that are 55+ are well into the 300,000. It doesn't have to be 55+ and a condo would work. But I don't know where to begin.

Any ideas? I've searched on realtor and it's giving me all places down near the shore.

I think they need to be closer to shopping/doctors. HELP! I'm out in Hunterdon County.

Also try visiting areas and trying to get a good deal. It's a buyer's market now. Check into resales and do a search on the market you're looking into. A quick search found that most are closer to 200,000. If that's close enough you might want to negotiate a better deal.

Do they need to be in Hunterdon County, or is another county acceptable?

I just did a google search for 55+ communities NJ >$200,000 and got quite a few hits for communities in Burlington & Ocean counties. Of course, I don't really know what any of them are like, but at least it's a place to start.

There is a 55 and over community called Covered Bridge in Manalapan. It's located on Rt. 9 on the Marlboro border. The mailing address is Englishtown, even though it's not in Englishtown.

It's in the price range you are looking for. It's an older community, but well-kept and there are many activities available for them.

We have relatives living at Leisure Knoll which is in Manchester NJ. It is a single family home community and I believe it is in the price range you mentioned. They really like it--- it's well-maintained, activites at the clubhouse, pool, etc.
It is in Ocean County, but they have great access to doctors and shopping! There are a number of these retirement communities there so the services/stores have sprung up to support that.

I have a relative living in Holiday City in Toms River, NJ. There are some houses for sale in that price range.

Thanks everyone! I was trying to avoid the shore because the rest of the family is in Westchester county and The Bronx. But you all gave me some great places to start. I'm off to look at Covered bridge!

If you want Burlington county, there are a few in Mt. Laurel and one in Vincentown/Southampton (Leisuretown)

There's a new one in Cherry Hill right near where the racetrack was but I think that is out of the price range.

Try this website. My Mom lives in an Erickson Community in Maryland and really likes it.

Erickson communities, especially the two in NJ are VERY expensive. My husband worked for Erickson building their community at Seabrook Village in Tinton Falls. They're very nice, upscale, with tons of amenities, but I would be shocked if you could get one for around $150K at either NJ location.

My grandmother and my aunt each own a house in a 55+ communities in Toms River. They are nice houses and reasonable priced. They don't live in the same one, but near each other. There are TONS of these communities in Toms River and the nearby towns

There's a really nice community in Monroe Township called Rossmoor. My mother-in-law lives there and really likes it. It has a mix of houses and condos. Theyre in the price range you're looking for. It's right off the turnpike at exit 8A and very close to the Princeton area.

My mother loves her place in Whiting, but since it's nowhere near where you want to be it doesn't do you much good. If by some chance they change their minds you can always PM me

My parents lived for 25 years in Crestwood Village in Whiting/Manchester Township in Ocean County. There's tons of houses for sale there now.

My aunt lives in Toms River and is very happy in her neighborhood.

There are 2 near me - check Belvidere, NJ. Not sure of the prices. But it's an easy trip up Rt. 31.

MIL lives in Clearbrook in Monroe Township, just up the road from Rossmoor. Also a mix of homes and condo style. Her community is an older one, but they do a lot of maintenance on the properties. I know that it's significantly less expensive than the newer developments in the community. She has lived there for at least 10 years and really enjoys it.

She has a 2 bdrm, 2 bath with a dining room, eat in kitchen and large living room. 2 car garage. Really worth checking out, especially with this being a buyers market.
