50mm on a Crop Sensor

I love my 50mm 1.4 lens, and would love to bring it with me to the parks, but do you think it will be too long of a lens on my crop sensor? Anyone try this before?

I love the 50 for a portrait lens. I prefer to use my 35 f1.8 as an everyday lens. I just ordered the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 to use as my walk around lens. I often find that 35 isn't wide enough sometimes.

In an ideal world, I'd just buy a new lens for this trip. My 3 lenses are the 50mm 1.4, 18-55mm kit, and 55-250mm kit. I just feel like I would want to open up more on my 18-55mm, and I'd get frustrated.

Has anyone ever rented a lens and brought it on vacation with them? That would probably be my only option, since all the money went to booking the trip itself ;)

What brand do you shoot with? I've had a Nikon and currently shoot with a Sony Nex 7. I bought both Nikon and Sony 35's for under $200. I bought my Sony used in New cond. for $150 shipped. I don't know how much rentals are, but you might not save that much by renting. Both of my lenses are sharp even wide open at f1.8.

What problem are you trying to solve? If your 50 is for your lowlight ride type stuff, it will work. It wouldn't be my first choice (I have the Sigma 30), but it will work. There are some on this forum that swear by the 50. You have all the good-light focal lengths covered. Those lenses can work in some lowlight conditions depending on the camera you have. The 55-250 will work great at AK for the Safari ride and outside shows where the 18-55 is too short. Several years ago I did a weeks vacation at WDW with the 18-55 and a 50-200. I got some great images from that vacation. The question I always ask is, what shots are you trying to get that you can't get with what you have?

What the 50mm won't do is be able to take in multiple buildings in one shot or for other things you may have to back up but it's still a nice lens to use. And I have used my 50mm far far more than my 30mm Sigma for rides etc. I'll spend a park day using an even longer lens! That doesn't mean that I don't like my wide angle but I'd be looking at something like a 10-20mm for ultra wide composition to compliment the 50mm rather than a 30-35mm to replace the 50mm if I wanted a wider angle. But it also isn't a necessity and you can do a lot with the 50. :thumbsup2

I shoot Canon.

I'll be using my camera mostly for family shots. I'm mainly concerned about space. I'm afraid I'll have to back up too far from the kids, and have others walk in between us while I'm trying to snap something. I'm also wanting to get nice shots of the fireworks. Again, I'm afraid that the 50mm will be too close unless we're halfway down Main Street, and I know hubby won't want that ;)

I'm so used to how much I can open up with my 50mm now, and I'm afraid I'll get frustrated with the kit. And I'm not sure that carrying around my camera bag will be an option.

I looked into BorrowLenses.com, and for the 24-70mm 2.8L is $66 for 10 days, which is a butt load cheaper than buying haha!

And thank you all so much for the replies! Photography is my passion, and I'm really hoping to get some great shots in September!

It's really just a matter of personal preference. I love going wider at Disney so I can get close without a lot of others getting in between. My own personal preference is that even 24 is not wide enough for what I want available. I shoot mostly with my Canon 17-55 f/2.8 and love it. I would recommend renting that and taking your zoom for AK and some of the other shows where 55 isn't long enough.

If you're taking shots at a character meal, you'd have to get really friendly with the people at the next table if you want to use a 50mm lens. Or learn to love close-ups.

As far as fireworks, I would use the 18-55. To get the nice flowery explosions you will need a tripod, and a remote. As far character greets, again I would use the 18-55 with flash. Of course I use my flash more than most. I do not have an aversion to flash photography and I actually am a proponent in the correct situations.

Oh, family shots...

I have no experience at that. But I love the 50 for night parades!

I love taking my 50 to the parks on my 7D.

Thank you, all, for your input! I'll have to talk to the hubby and see if he'll let me rent for the trip. I'd really love to get something more wide angle that will open up for me when I need it. Thanks again!

Isn't the crop factor on Canon 1.6? 50mm = 80mm

Just my opinion, but to me...

Crop numbers do not matter if you only shoot with one body, and don't do a lot of math in post processing...

A 50 is much wider than a 200 and not as wide as a 20something.

Hmmmm, I will have to meet this gentleman and study him to find how he has gained such control over his wife....

Heheheheeee

Ha! Not control...just avoiding an unnecessary argument ;)

He's not totally on board with it right now. I'll have to work on him though. He just doesn't understand why my current lenses won't be sufficient enough, and there's really no explaining it to him. We're going over my birthday, so maybe I'll ask for a rental lens for my birthday LOL!
