5-second rule doesn't apply at WDW

You don't see it as frivolous but for someone like me who's lucky they can afford a hot dog in the first place, by a second lunch because I'm "too good" to eat something that touched the floor, is not an option. I'm also not about to go ask Disney to replace food that I dropped on the floor when it's not their fault.

Restaurants assume that this type of thing will happen on occasion and that is built into the price. Of course if it happens too much it will drive up the costs, but that's the case with anything that is returned. Certain people will take advantage of situations, but I can't imagine someone taking a bite of a hot dog (I'm vegetarian, so I really can't imagine it ) and then dropping it just to get a whole hot dog.

I was at Cosmic Rays with some friends earlier this year. I wanted to take a pill after eating and I dropped it on the floor. I picked it up and left it on the tray and took another out of the bottle. My friend said to me "five second rule". I said, no not here!

Another reason why I pack those little trial size packs of Clorox wipes The remote and the toilet are the first things that get wiped down.

I really have to laugh at all the germaphobes LOL!! You do realize there are more germs on door handles, the bars on the rides and in your hotel room then there is on the ground right?

Also don't forget that there are more germs on an average home kitchen counter than a on an average public toilet seat.

I don't plan on having my child licking those things or her hands when she's done touching them. While I can't control every one of the germs that dd comes into contact with, I don't "help" them harm her by picking up dirty food and having her eat it. I don't think that's being a germaphobe, but clean.

I haven't laughed so hard in a long time!

I was just reading some of the replies to DH because he asked what I was laughing about. I told him that when I read the post from whomever said they would've eaten it themselves and given the kid their hot dog, it made me think of him. (That's exactly what my DH would do!) He said "No way! Gross! I wouldn't do that!" So of course I had to remind him of the time he bought me an ice cream cone, one of those hand-dipped sugar cones, at a stop along the turnpike. We walked out, I took one lick, and...yep, you guessed it, the scoop of ice cream fell off the cone right onto the ground! After a very brief "discussion" over what to do with it, DH proceeded to pick up the ice cream, plop it back onto the cone, and eat it himself! After I reminded him, he said "Hey! I paid over three dollars for that ice cream!" I'm pretty sure he invoked the 5 second rule at the time.

We have the "five second rule". I don't worry much about food hitting the floor. I probably would have given my DD the hotdog too. Look at it this way ... at least they wiped it off!

Now there's a good perspective -- seems to be easier to judge someone when you haven't walked a mile in their shoes.

We have 2 sons. Our oldest son has some nasty habits (nose picking /eating and just the other day DH caught him peeling off a scab and eating it ). Youngest son is very adamant about being clean (dishes, cups, utensils...).

Go figure but the oldest son is rarely sick. I honestly can't remember the last time he even had a cold. Our yongest son however is always sick. He even developed asthma at 9 mos. old.

Even more puzzling is that only our youngest was breastfed.

Years ago I knew a family that had all sorts of animals inside. Dogs, cats, baby ducks and then outside they had chickens, rabbits and goats. She said our youngest would get less illnesses if I would leave him with her for a day. The thinking being that his immunity would build up being around the animals and dirt. Looking back on it maybe I should have, her children were rarely ever sick.

Hmmm, I'm thinking mud pies for lunch tomorrow. J/K

I'm sure whatever is on the floor at WDW is MUCH healthier than the ground up pig snouts, chemicals, and preservatives that are in the hot dog to begin with...

As far as licking the railings, my 4yo was basically doing that at WDW in February and was driving my sister nuts. Then Jake would lie down on the ground,..and that also made her wonder about him. He's my 4th child and I learned that I can't react to everything he does and had better pick my battles.

He is almost 5yo now and I'm hoping he won't be quite so touchy-feeling thos year.

The Clorox wipes aren't such a bad idea for the tv remote, but I don't worry much about the toilet since I do wash my hands after using it. Doorknobs are what I don't like to touch.

I know that I'm not a germaphob (far from it, I never even boiled my first child's toys, pacifiers, etc), but I don't think I'm too far in the other direction.

My guess, though, is that we all think that about ourselves. (IE, we're the normal, average ones and the others go too far one way or the other...)

You have one of those kinds of kids too? Everything goes in my DD's mouth, or her mouth goes on it. It makes me crazy. I too am holding she'll outgrow it and it seems to be fading now that she's 5. Maybe that's why I don't worry about dropped food! My DD gets her yucky germs elsewhere.

I've always hated and couldn't understand the 5 second rule, even at home. Gross! Lately, the furthest I'll go at home is if I drop something that is able to be washed with water,then I'll wash and eat it.

At least Jake is now old enough to understand a little about germs and that they make him sick. He's not quite 5 so that understanding is very basic, of course, but maybe he's almost to the point of controlling himself.

But since he is by far the healthies of my children I can't really knock his strategy.

My 14yo son is still always touching things. Maybe he's better now, but for years he couldn't pass by a garbage can without touching it. He does have some neurological problems, which probably contribute to this, but touching garbage cans is where I draw the line. Yucko!

I'm now in pre-trip germ prevention when I kick things up a notch so we at least don't go to WDW already sick. Jake does understand that!

When my DD was 4, I took her into the bathroom with me at a restaurant. She didn't have to go herself, and did not want to have to wash her hands, and since we had already eaten, I told her to keep her hands by her side and to touch nothing. As soon as I said that, I looked up to see her playing with the lid of the "feminine product disposal container", which we all know is probably the dirtiest place in a ladies' restroom. So I said to her, "Why did you touch that? Now we have to wash your hands!" She says, "No, we don't!" and proceeds to LICK HER HAND!!!!! Needless to say I was horrified and an absolute nervous wreck for the next few days while I waited for some hideous illness to show up! However, I am happy to report she suffered no ill effects and is now a happy, healthy 7 yr old (and I have a great story to boot!). My point? While I firmly believe in washing hands and not eating off the floor, I don't obsess about germs anymore. If my DD can touch the most germ laden part of a public restroom, lick her hand, and be OK, chances are, most people can touch the hotel remote, doorknob, park handrail, etc, and survive.
