This is Mike's excuse all the time for parents who don't want to do the recommended treatment for their kids...."but I heard on the news that there is a 1 in a million chance my kid may get ______(guillain barre, autism, etc) by getting this _____ (medication, shot, whatever)"

To which Mike tells them they have a better chance of getting into a fatal accident on the way home. :)

The spa has started aqua aerobics, didn't sign up for the class this time, maybe next time.
Sue

Hey, ya'll don't need to sign up for aqua aerobics - you've got me onboard...that is if you can get me pried out of my deck chair or the lounger in the rainforest... ;)

Monica,

I need you to move to Alpharetta to work at our Y. Last night Ashley had her 1st-ever swimming lesson. She's 3 yrs. & 3 months. We took her to the pool quite a bit last year and she's fearless. I didn't put her in lessons before this because I just didn't feel like doing a parent & tot class. Anyway, her instructor last night looked very young ... high school-ish. Ashley sat on the side then she started leaning over to play in the water. I could just see her flipping in. Then she was brave enough to get in the water by herself & hang off the side. All of this while the instructor was working one-on-one with one of the other 5 kids in the class. Needless to say, I didn't take an eye off of her the entire glass. I was pretty much right against the glass in case I needed to beat on it to get someone to get my child out of the water. That is the first time I've felt uncomfortable having a child in swimming lessons. If she would have had a float on, I would have been ok. But, there were 6 3-year olds in beginner class without any sort of floatation device on. I think I'm going to have a chat with the instructor before class on Wed.

Angie,

That would have upset me too. They need to have at least an assistant there who can keep an eye on the others while instructor works one-on-one. I definitely think you should talk to someone about that. :wizard:

Uh oh, I'm about ready to step on the soap box...

For the rest of you - Here's your topic - are jeans, tank tops or shorts acceptable dining attire in Palo :lmao: discuss...

- I am a volunteer trainer for the YMCA of the USA certifying swimming instructors - (I only certify and it's up to the director to continue to develop and supervise on the job...)

As a mom - if I'm not teaching during my kids' lessons - I can be downright evil if provoked - so, yes, I've been known to leave claw marks on pool observation windows, put a stop watch on my child sitting idle on the side.

was the time monopolizer a crier? Maybe the child isn't quite ready for a structured class- maybe tactfully discuss with the director a new program concept of a mom & me beginner class covering the beginning preschool skills but with the comfort of a parent - we (local) developed it a few years ago - it worked wonderfully for those not quite ready to go lessons alone...

3-5 beginners are incredibly tough to teach - the next group up is my favorite...even so, at this age/level - they should not spend a bunch of time just sitting - part of the Ys philosophy is to use the float belts to get them into the water building confidence, strength and endurance as they learn the front paddle, back and side paddle (probably will look more like dog paddle at this age level... -reasoning, developmentally, in general, their bodies aren't strong enough or coordinated enough to do a "perfect" front crawl/freestyle stroke...

So, with that in mind - there really shouldn't be a lot of waiting for turns-
except for when working without a float belt - even then - the class can be given a task - sitting and kicking with straight legs - practicing arms - (for Pikes - with belts - I do let them get in and practice kicks, etc - but, one hand must be on the side at all times...) -

I have safety rules - can't get in unless I say o.k. - and ears must be out of the water....

One thing you might want to check even though this is Your daughter's first structured swim lesson she may not need to start at the beginning - if you've been swimming with her alot -- I looked on their site -but, couldn't see any class discriptions to tell if they were using National YMCA's recommendations...Ask to see an skill evaluation sheet for her level Pike and the next Eel (if they are using Pike, Eels, and Rays...)

(National's recommendation for moving into the next level for stroke development is 5 ft without a float belt on front/back/side using whatever means of locomotion (i.e. doesn't have to be "perfect" or even face in the water - 15 feet WITH a float belt - ...)

HTH! Keep me posted!!!

back to our regularly scheduled fluff...

hmm, double scoop aqua aerobics, pilates, and now swimming lessons - maybe I can earn enough on this cruise to payoff the stateroom charge account... :lmao:

W :sunny: W - missed lots of posts and it is hard to catch up.

Time is running out for me to make decisions on the Mexican ruins for the Costa Maya trip. I am reviewing the material Sandi posted, it looks interesting. I will advise if there is still room on your tour.

We did get the Dive booked at Epcot - that should be fun. I'll ask later if anyone wants to catch up for dinner after our dive. April 29th (I hope...that is right - it should be a Saturday.)

Still sweating on what to do with reservations during our dives with the Manatees. I have contacted a very nice lady who will let me use the net at 6:00 am -- so no taking all the good stuff until I get on line please. Now to make sure the 'puter works...and that I have time to book and make the boat, now what time does that boat leave?

Nitrox class set for the 17th. Lunchtimes will be devoted to studying and not posting. Glad this is up now set...

Diving with sharks is not on my list of things to do, but I am sure Sam is game.

Just realized (ok - I am multi-tasking on the phone) and that we will be on the cruise on the start of the Hurricane Season - I will not miss the media hype. Must have a "hurricane" to celebrate on June 1st.

I'm sure there's lots more I missed, so send me another post if I neglected you.

Oh gosh, there was a huge thread on this when we were getting ready for our November cruise.....

Here is my Answer - NO. Someone said it very well on the main thread....hum, well, to quote him out of context. Disney has kept the dress code for a reason, to compliment the mystery of the old cruise liners. Dining (note, not eating) is a show and you are part of it. If you wish to wear jeans, eat (not dine) at the Buffet.

SO THERE --- PBLLLTTT.
