Uh oh, I'm about ready to step on the soap box...
For the rest of you - Here's your topic - are jeans, tank tops or shorts acceptable dining attire in Palo
discuss...
- I am a volunteer trainer for the YMCA of the USA certifying swimming instructors - (I only certify and it's up to the director to continue to develop and supervise on the job...)
As a mom - if I'm not teaching during my kids' lessons - I can be downright evil if provoked - so, yes, I've been known to leave claw marks on pool observation windows, put a stop watch on my child sitting idle on the side.
was the time monopolizer a crier? Maybe the child isn't quite ready for a structured class- maybe tactfully discuss with the director a new program concept of a mom & me beginner class covering the beginning preschool skills but with the comfort of a parent - we (local) developed it a few years ago - it worked wonderfully for those not quite ready to go lessons alone...
3-5 beginners are incredibly tough to teach - the next group up is my favorite...even so, at this age/level - they should not spend a bunch of time just sitting - part of the Ys philosophy is to use the float belts to get them into the water building confidence, strength and endurance as they learn the front paddle, back and side paddle (probably will look more like dog paddle at this age level... -reasoning, developmentally, in general, their bodies aren't strong enough or coordinated enough to do a "perfect" front crawl/freestyle stroke...
So, with that in mind - there really shouldn't be a lot of waiting for turns-
except for when working without a float belt - even then - the class can be given a task - sitting and kicking with straight legs - practicing arms - (for Pikes - with belts - I do let them get in and practice kicks, etc - but, one hand must be on the side at all times...) -
I have safety rules - can't get in unless I say o.k. - and ears must be out of the water....
One thing you might want to check even though this is Your daughter's first structured swim lesson she may not need to start at the beginning - if you've been swimming with her alot -- I looked on their site -but, couldn't see any class discriptions to tell if they were using National YMCA's recommendations...Ask to see an skill evaluation sheet for her level Pike and the next Eel (if they are using Pike, Eels, and Rays...)
(National's recommendation for moving into the next level for stroke development is 5 ft without a float belt on front/back/side using whatever means of locomotion (i.e. doesn't have to be "perfect" or even face in the water - 15 feet WITH a float belt - ...)
HTH! Keep me posted!!!
back to our regularly scheduled fluff...
