Looks like I may have a cleaning "fairy" at my house. BIL's wife loves to clean -especially when stressed. DH says she's chomping at the bit to clean. Hmm ... does that mean I don't have a clean house???? :scratchin

Ang

Sounds like maybe a roundabout way of saying they're sorry to impose, but they will make themselves useful. I wouldn't take it as an insult. It must be hard to be heading to someone's house as a guest, not knowing how long you will need to stay.

Just saw a note from our HR person that we're having a meeting tomorrow to talk about fund raising. We are a small company (less than 100 people) but try and do fund raising for these type of things.

But see, if everybody helps a little bit, it sure adds up to a lot.

I hope I didn't look like I was tooting our horn... I just had to post about the water, because I just thought it was so ironic that with ALLLLLLLL that water, what were we sending... MORE WATER - 77,000 GALLONS of it. (Yes, I understand that CLEAN drinking water is what's needed, but I just had to laugh at it a bit)

Only problem is I won't be here. I'll be on my way to Florida.
Now isn't that too bad...
Have a WONDERFUL ... MAGICAL trip!!

Heard on the news that municipal buildings, churches and business from NO to Texas were taking people in needing shelter. They are busing people into Houston to stay at the Astro Dome.

Yep, they are opening the Astrodome today for those people who need shelter and or where evacuated from the dome...A lot of area churches are stepping up to open their doors. The Houston area YMCAs are teaming with the local Christian Contemporary Radio Station to collect gift cards for gas, supplies, clothes etc...

The Houston (inner city) school district is offering to let displaced children attend classes without all of the normal paperwork involved since it will be several months for many areas to reopen schools.

Two other related items I didn't really think about which was discussed on the Christian station are the pets - many shelters won't/wouldn't take pets so many were left behind...Donations to Humane Societies and/or SPCAs if they are able to funnel donations to the needed areas or to the relocated areas. And, many pregnant women who have been relocated may not be able to get care...Many dr's are reluctant to take on late trimester patients, especially without records...

Wel, HELLO... baby is coming, paperwork or not!!!!!! It's time to put malpractice fears aside and help these poor mothers!!!!! (Sorry to those of you who are MD's and pay dearly for your insurance...) This is not a time to follow SOP!!!!

On a lighter note...

Karen, I just thought of you - I just got an e-mail from our H.S. reunion committee. Our reunion, this weekend is being sponsored by Coors since a classmate now works for Coors...Had to laugh at the "humanitarian" effort since I just previously read your quote about A.B. donating water...

Started to feel guilty about being associated with the competition, then realized - I can't stand beer in the first place... :rotfl2:

Here arelighter hurricane related human interest stories. One of the local volunteer fire departments are sheltering one family 5 generations, 80+ members total!

The stories of people stepping forward to help are really heart warming...The Christian radio station took a call from a 5 year old boy who is baking cookies, sharing his toys and emptying his piggy bank of all $3 to help the kids...It was really touching...

So is the Red Cross the best place to make a donation? They will be the first ones there, I think.

The Red Cross is always the best bet - you know exactly where your $ is going. Unfortunately, there are too many scam artists who come out of the woodwork in times of crisis. The denomination of your local church may also be working to help funnel $, supplies, to rebuild in the disaster areas or help the shelter churches.

The main thread has a Giving Post - for folk to log on and just post -- this was stated on that thread. "....someone made a donation to www.noahs-wish.org. Can't forget our four-legged family members who are desperately in need of help.".

I am one of the most soft-hearted animal lovers and yes, they need our help, but we must help the new wee little ones....

OMGosh guys..I am scared......It just took my 30 mins to wait in line to get gas. There is talk that gas is going to be rationed to only $10 per customer. It was 2.59 on the way to work this morning and I jsut filled up at 2.89........We are supposed to leave to ORlando 2mrrw, I am so scared of running out of gas. How is it looking in your parts of the country? I was listening to the XM radio and they said that gas was 3.55 a gal in Atlanta, Angie? Please tell me how the gas is looking in your parts, exp those of you in FLA. If there is a chance I will run out of gas, and be stranded I dont know if I should go 2mrrw.

I need to do errands for my Mother after work and will post what I see on the way home....It has been higher than 2.59 here, but our county has an extra .10 gas tax over anywhere else in the state....

Perhaps checking AAA will help. I think they post info like that...

Irene, I am not concerned with the price right now, it is more so the fact, will I be stranded with 4 kids once I get there, becasue there is no gas. Can you just tell me how the stations are looking and if there seems to be a "panic" in the air?

Nothing about rationing on the AAA site....at least for my area code, which I have to plug in to access the information.

Read this story - it says the report in GA about rationing is FALSE.

Plenty of Gas to Go Around
WSAV News 3
Wednesday, August 31, 2005

You’ve heard all the rumors of problems with gas supplies. WSAV has spoken to two major convenience store chains and several gas stations, and everyone reports they have gas and see no problem getting more. The Chatham Emergency Management Agency released the following statement this afternoon.

“There is a rumor circulating that there will be a "Gas Shortage" or "Gas Rationing" in the State Of Georgia. These rumors are false. Colonial Oil AND the Governor's office both state that these rumors are FALSE.”

Again, there is no problem with gasoline supplies in Georgia so don’t panic.

This was the full story on the thread I just posted to Amanda,,,,,,

OMG Irene I love love love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been so concerned about this! All we can do is hope and pray that it is true, and if it is not true, I will need a place for me and the 4 kids once POP kicks us out next week! (PS I thought I posted this earlier but it didnot got thru)

Gosh - :o golly gee!

Not that it makes a difference, but I haven't checked the gas here. I know our stations in town were not crowded. The price has been hovering around $2.70.

I guess maybe I should fill one car tonight, and then go fill the other one tomorrow. That's what I did to get by the last time we had a shortage. I made it through....barely. But I also wasn't running the a/c then, either.

We leave for Florida tomorrow on our planned road trip. We sail on Sunday. Sure we know we'll have to pay more but its a little too late to change everything and try and fly down - plus we are bringing all the buttons and a box for another cruiser.

I would say if you are that scared then it isn't worth going.
