I'll echo Stacey. Prayers and Pixie Dust Maria! :grouphug:

Maria -- hope your tests go ok.

I too have a middle schooler (dd) who I am dreading sending to middle school. She has always struggled more in school that ds. He is straight A's and she has to work to make A/B Honor Roll. All of her friends have been in the Gifted and Talented program in elementary. She feels a little left out, however, she is so involved after school (swimming 2 hours a day 4 days a week after school and then a 2 hour practice on Saturdays, plus 1 jazz class during the week and one cheerleading class on Saturdays.) Those are things she really enjoys and is very good at. She tried at the beginning of school to get into GT, but she didn't make it. She has started asking if she can test again this summer. She might could make it in Humanities because her reading level has improved tremendously this year due to a very good teacher. Unfortunately, her math has not improved due to a very pooooooor teacher. Every parent that I know that has this teacher has had problems and that is even with the exceptionally bright kids.

I have always told her that she might not be able to do all of the extra activities if she gets in GT with all of the extra homework they give. SHould I let her test or not. What do you all think? I would hate for her to be disappointed again.

Good luck with all the concerns!

It will all work out, how? It's a mystery......

Hi Pam,
I think if your DD wants to try for GT, then you need to let her. It is the worst thing in the world as a parent to see your child be hurt or disappointed, but sometimes we have to stand back and let it happen. (Besides, she MAY just make it!!)
If they don't suffer some setbacks and disappointments at a young age, they'll have a lot more trouble dealing with it when they get older. Just try to talk to her ahead of time, not too negatively, but a gentle reminder that the school can't let everyone in who tries, etc.......

T.O.P. !!!!! Whoo Hoo.....it takes so little these days...

Maria, that doesn't sound like fun. Hope all is well.

Pam, is your son in G/T? Siblings usually wind up really close in those scores. I'm surprised that there is more homework in the gifted clases, it isn't supposed to be that way. Sounds like they are structuring the classes more like honors classes. Gifted and high achieving are not really synonymous. Believe me, I know.

We finally heard back from the Performing Arts school. They will be calling within the next week to schedule an interview. I think that means that there are openings! Alicia should have no problem with an interview, the problem might be for her to stop talking. I'm trying to coach her that her long-term goal should probably not be "dancing at Disneyworld".

:flower1:Good morning cruisers!:flower1:

Happy Wednesday!

Maria - good luck on your tests today! We'll be thinking about you and sending good vibes your way. :goodvibes

Maria, good luck today! Prayers & pixie dust :wizard: are sent your way!

Amanda, did you make it to the Braves game last night? I think it was last night, right? We had some serious weather here around 6:30 p.m. I've never seen hail like that before. It was large marble size & coming down like a hard rain. By the time it stopped, the back patio slab was entirely covered with a layer of ice! I'm glad our cars have a home in the garage :) .

I'm home today for day #2. I had a nasty stomach bug  that started during the night Mon. night/Tues. morning. I'm feeling much better today but still wiped out & a little dehydrated. I hope the rest of the family doesn't get it, especially the girls.

Angie

Pam - If DD wants to try to test again, I would let her try, however, I would *try* to explain to her that if she doesn't get into G/T, she can do her best to excel at the level she is in.

It's hard for me to watch my DD have to work so hard to make honor roll (which she does, but its 'painful') when everything about school came so naturally for me. I never cracked a book, was in all accellerated classes (we didn't have a true g/t program then), and got nothing but A's through high school. Sometimes its hard for me to remember that her brain doesn't work like mine... (and I have a Master's degree in education... I *should* be more sympathetic to her).

My DS on the other hand, takes after me- I'm glad that he's younger, so that she doesn't feel the need to 'be like him'.

If I were you, I would also make sure that she understands that if she DOES go into the G/T program, and she is struggling, she needs to let you know. Kids tend to be very proud and not ask for the help they need, thinking that it will make them look like a failure.

Just my two cents...

Hello all,

I've been reading every now and then, but just haven't chimed in. :cool1: It's seems the list is growing and the fingers have been typing. It's getting so close. NOT!

Mary...I sent a picture with our information. Just let me know if you have any problems with it.

Have a great day!
Susan

Hi Susan - I did get it, but haven't been able to upload it due to computer problems on my end. Hopefully it will be up before the weekend. I'll have to remember which cruise you are on since I though it was for the DVC Cruise (this September) based on your name. :) I'm doing a page for them as well.

Thank you, thank you, thank you....you guys are too much. I didn't get to read the boards this morning before my test, but as you can see I MADE IT!!! It was a lot easier than I thought. This is a new gastro doctor that I went to and he is great. A lot different from the last time, 8 years ago, that I had this done. The worst part was waiting. The first patient took longer than expected and that put everyone late. But thank you all for your prayers and pixie dust and hugs. It helped more than you know. The outcome: nothing has changed from the last time. My hiatus hernia is small and not to be worried about. Esophagus, etc are fine. The doctor told me my problem is, get this, my weight. Now, I'm not thin, but I guess I really need to concentrate on losing that stomach of mine. I already lost 8 lbs. and am still working on it. Now that the weather is good, I will be walking and moving around more. But, other than that, things are good. I can't thank all of you enough for your kind words to a person who've never met before.

I hope everyone has a great day!!!

TTFN,
Maria :flower:

Mary,

Don't worry about getting it posted fast. I should've told you which cruise I am on. I know that you have lots of cruises planned. We can't make the member cruise this year, maybe next time. We are just looking forward to the Double Scoops cruise.

Thanks for keeping up on our list.

Susan

:cheer2: :cheer2: Yea, Maria!! Glad things went well!!! We may be STRANGE here, but strangers, we are not! ;)

Hey... who are you callin' strange.... oh, wait... yeah... that's me. :teeth:

Thanks Monica. I'm feeling much better. I slept all morning and woke up pretty refreshed. I should be doing work right now but am pretty much blowing it off. That's what sick leave is for, right?!

It's interesting to see what goes in the neighborhood while everyone is at work. Next door neighbor is having landscaping done in her back yard. Some sort of white picket fence. Will have to go snoop later after I pick the girls up from day care. Across the street, someone is have their septic tank cleaned out. DH would be calling me Gladys Kravitz right about now! ;)
