Here's a little food for thought as I head out to dinner....

You know how puppies and kittens (and babies!) are so cute when they're little, they're almost irresistable??
Did you ever think that maybe that was a marketing ploy made by God?

:scratchin

I know it is.....it's so we fall head over heels in love with them and we are less likely to kill them when they turn 13. ;)

btw, the REASON we love them so much (puppies, kitten, babies) has to do with their head size in proportion to their bodies and their eye size in proportion to their heads. Big heads, big eyes.....that gets us every time (especially us women)

Which is why the Precious Moments ppl are so cute....big heads....big eyes.

Which probably is why Mickey and Minnie are so cute.....look at the size of their rodent heads compared to the rest of them. :)

Shelly,

Are your kids in private or public schools? Beginning this august for the 2007-2008 school year the legislature has passed a referendum which states public schools may not start earlier than the 4th Monday in August. If you were to schedule the repo in 2008 - it might only be a few days at the beginning of school. Just something to research.

I never even looked at the ships that cruise out of Texas...are they the larget type ships? For some reason, I have always assumed it was the smaller ships leaving from Texas...I dunno maybe its just me but I dont exactly think of "texas" when I think cruise! LOL

I believe I saw somewhere that RCCL was moving a Voyager ship to sail out of Galveston.

BBB: Not sure if you know this or not, but the Texas Legislature mandated that schools in Texas can not start before the 4th monday in August. That means school will be starting this year on Aug. 27. Which means, schools will be getting out between May 30 and June 6, depending on how many holidays they take in the middle of the year. Of course, if your kids are in private school, that might be different.

Oops, just caught up and realized Monica already posted about the start date in Texas. Sorry Monica.

Our school district has not approved its calendar yet, and I am lobbying school board to re-look at it. They have our kids not going back until either Jan 7 or Jan 9. I say have them go back sooner and get out sooner. Matter of fact, the Houston ISD's calendar is the one I forwarded to all of them so they could see that it could be done.

Cruising out of Galveston???

Currently, RCCL is sailing the Rapsody and the Splendour out of Galveston- Splendor is a panamax -

Princess currently has the Grand Princess here too. (until April 2007) Plus an older Carnival ship. We sailed the Splendour out of Galveston on a partial PC transit - we loved the ship, we didn't have kids with us - but, they've since added a rock climbing wall and a lot of the amenities of the newer ships.

The RCCL and Carnival's terminals are right within walking distance of the historic Strand - great shopping and restaurants. Our beaches are icky...Flying Southwest into Hobby works well. Bush- Intercontinental is also easy but, a bit longer.

Pre-cruise dinner at our house!!! :cool1:

just looked the RCCL Voyager is coming in 2008.

Hey guys, thanks for the info.
My kids are in public schools but I didn't know they'd be starting school so late. I thought I had read elsewhere (somewhere on the cruise forums) that even though the legislature had changed, the schools would get waivers or something to start earlier until their contracts were up- or something like that.

It's definitely something to think about if they are starting that late. But the cruise does start Aug 17th- so they'd miss- like what... 5 days or so of school? It's a thought. I may just have to have a talk with the highschool principal and see what he thinks because she will be starting highschool by that time and I'm wondering if it would be better to miss some time in May or miss a few days at the beginning of the year. I know the younger grades we have been able to get excused absences for WDW trips -usually not too many days though... like taken around holidays or a few days at the end of the year... but I'm not sure what highschool principal and teachers feel about it. Or how hard it would make it on her to start highschool out later than everyone else. That cruise itinerary sure does sound nice though! (and 15 days is even more than 2 back to back 7 day cruises without the saturday in the middle spent at PC! LOL)

If nothing else, we MAY just:
Keep our reservation as it is and transfer it to a later date just to keep the stateroom credit (for rebooking onboard) then later see what 2009 summer cruises entail. If they do special itineraries 3 years in a row, then we just won't cruise Disney again for a long time (like until the kids are adults). But if not, maybe we can still go that summer because who knows, maybe by some miracle my oldest will be mature enough to be with the older teens by then. Miracles could happen. LOL

Or we'll just eventually cancel it, get our deposit back and go to plan B (as far as vacations go) sooner than we'd planned. What I'm talking about is Jamaica, this time with the kids. See we'd already figured this (summer 2008) would be the last Disney cruise for us, for a long time and that's why we were going to do back to back cruises. Then we'd do other things like go to Jamaica again but this time with the kids instead of alone. If things don't work out for summer 2009 or we don't want to wait that long and cancel the Disney cruise all together- we can just go to Jamaica instead. For the amount we'd save on the Jamaica trip- we could still throw in some trips solely to WDW and not the disney cruise. yanno? (I looked for summer 2007 dates for the resort we'd want with the kids, including flight and counting the cost of passports and all that- and it's about $2k less than the cruise is for us not even counting the flight it would cost to get to Florida plus transportation to/from PC, etc. And it includes things we'd do on the cruise that would cost us to do those things at the ports, etc. So it's quite a bit of savings- and I'm talking about checking a 10 day trip to Jamaica! Still wouldn't be the same as a Disney cruise, but I'm sure we'd enjoy it especially at that price.) and we could do other WDW trips- either with or without DH since he's not all that keen on going to WDW.

anyway, it's a lot to think about.

Oh and I agree about ending the school year sooner and cutting that winter break a bit. This year we had winter holiday break from Dec 15th to Jan 4th and I thought that was a bit over the top- especially because it cuts so much on any other breaks the rest of the year- and especially if it makes us end the year later! I don't recall EVER getting out THAT much before Christmas when I was young- and we always started back on the 2nd unless it fell on a weekend. This time they got out before the end of the week 10 days before Christmas and started back Jan 4th near the end of the week. Ridiculous. Especially considering all they got was 2 days for Thanksgiving, one week in March (used to be in Feb and now it's in march like every other spring break making prices higher during that time for cruises and other trips) and 2 days in april that are weather makeup days- which they won't get probably because we've already had one day that it snowed and they cancelled school. So that's 2 days for Thanksgiving, a HUGE winter break, one week in march, 2 days in april which at this point they'll only get one day, if that. That's it. Shorten that winter break and give some other breaks throughout the year, like they used to, and end earlier- is what I say! Just a couple of years ago here they had shorter winter break and more breaks throughout the year- but every year it gets worse and worse on the schedules. :(

BBB,
I've been on a cruise in late November (11/30/03) December (12/18/04) and January (1/7/06) I did not freeze my butt off on any of them.

Ya make do with what you can. The perfect conditions for a cruise will NEVER ever occur.

I was on a cruise (9/4/05) that had beautiful weather. But we couldn't return to Port Canaveral b/c of hurricane Ophelia. There was a guest services line a mile long with everyone complaining and whining about having to change flights, and their car still parked at PC, and how they wouldn't get to WDW until later than they expected (I think Port Everglades was 3 hours from WDW instead of the normal 1 to go from PC to WDW) None of the big whiners and loud complainers were DISers, I'm thankful to say. The line was filled with people who were miserable and wanted to make everyone else miserable around them b/c they didn't get what they had bargained for. I just thought "Come on, you're on a freaking CRUISE SHIP. Make the best of it and make lemonade out of lemons!!!!" Sorry, but I'd rather be on a cruise ship sailing into the wrong port than at home doing laundry!!!!

No cruise you go on will every fit every single one of your conditions. Make the best out of a cruise that DOES exist. :) Your family will learn flexibility and how to roll with the punches. :) They are good qualities to possess. :) :)

We do try to be flexible when we can and roll with the punches. For instance if we'd went on the cruise and CC got cancelled due to weather- we'd be bummed but there would be no complaining. Can't control the weather! But we're NOT going to be flexible and just go on a cruise that doesn't have any ports we're interested in AND doesn't go out of WDW area so we can go there before the cruise AND (most importantly) doesn't even have CC on the itinerary. Nope. That's where I draw the line in my flexibility- especially paying that much. Like I posted (long after your post) we're going to be flexible- but the extent of that is just going to have to be some Disney cruise at some other time that as closely as possible fits our desires for the trip OR take a trip somewhere else that does. (and end up saving money to boot- money that could be used for other WDW trips LOL)

I didn't have a whole heck of a lot of conditions- just summer so I wouldn't have to mess with taking the kids out of school, taking the cruise in 2008 before the kids got certain ages based on reasons I've already stated, and CC on the itinerary. That's it. Special itineraries every summer that don't include CC on the itinerary kinda knocks our plans out of the water (hehe) in one fell swoop- regardless of any other "conditions" we would have liked. Maybe if the cruises were still out of PC (where we could go to WDW beforehand) and still had some ports we would like to go to, but for some reason just didn't include CC we'd still go because after all- there is no guarantee you'd actually go to CC due to weather and such... but that combined with ports we're not interested in and could go to on other cruises MUCH cheaper, and not leaving at PC so no WDW beforehand- all of it combined is just too much. And 2yrs in a row! It's just a disappointment, that's all. I'm sure I'll get over it and figure out something. It may not include a Disney cruise, but we'll figure out something somewhere- where we'll still enjoy ourselves. I wasn't ready to not have a Disney cruise for many many years though. I wanted that one more back to back fix before that... *pout*

I put an email in to my travel agent and we'll see if I can just get waitlisted for the Aug repo trip... MAYBE we can get the rooms we'd originally hoped to be able to get for the back to back June 2008 cruises (we were hoping for either obstructed view verandahs cat 7 with inside stateroom across OR navigator's verandah with inside stateroom across) - and maybe it won't cost much more than 2 seven day cruises would have cost anyway.

If so- the only difference would be that our cruise would be 1 night longer, and the kids would miss a few days of school. To heck with if they'd like it or not. If I HAVE to (especially for the oldest) I'll go thru the motions of homeschooling her only to enroll her in the school soon as we return. Then they couldn't do a thing about that (as far as truancy issues) Gotta do what we gotta do. :rotfl:
