In a desperate attempt to forstall cleaning I did a bit of research...ANYTHING is better than cleaning...

The Texas Legislature approved 2007-2008 school start date as the 4th Monday in August - no waivers. (August 27, 2007) - 2 weeks later than the current start date...

The end date will depend where there is more political, tourism, parent, and/or educator pressure

-End in May: cutting vacation and teacher institute days - which would lengthen summer vacation which would lead to less student learning retention, less opportunity for teacher continuing ed etc...etc...

or keeping the school year vacation and institute days pushing the end date into June - sticking with the traditional 10 weeks of summer vacation. Less opportunity for loss of learning retention - less time spent on review, etc...etc...

OK really do need to get something accomplished...besides wishing and dreaming for a do-over cruise

Man, I learn a lot on this thread- including the quote and the other posts about this. Yes, we're in Texas too and I haven't even seen a schedule for next year yet. LOL I don't even know what day school starts around here.

I know how they've been handling the "starting later" thing though- because the last 2yrs they haven't had the waivers to start early and they have just about voided all breaks that they used to have (hence the reason we had to postpone our previously planned first cruise for Feb 2005 because they took away that week break they used to have there!) Now they started having only Christmas break and all other breaks weren't a week- they were only like a long weekend... like a Friday/Monday off. Sometimes Friday/Mon/Tues instead of a complete week (like for spring break, Feb break completely gone). If they start even LATER in Aug- I have no idea where they'll cut days even more but I'm not keen on the school year ending mid June and such. Summer already feels so short. I remember in my day (yeah, I'm old but not THAT old) in this same area we had THREE months off for summer. We ended at the end of May and started early Sept. We had breaks too- so they have to be just allotting more days for school than they did in my day. LOL

Why exactly are they messing with the start date? It was bad enough starting early Aug (ending end of May) but now they are pushing back the start date making the ending date later? Why oh why? I don't get why they are doing that. I'd rather start earlier than end later. :(

Are you sure they don't have a "preliminary" calendar somewhere you could take a peek at? Or, is there enough consistency to previous years that you can make a good guess?!

I say we shoot for the 1st Eastern that "starts" in the month of June 2008. :goodvibes

Unfortunately no -- Even this year, school was out on May 25, but graduation wasn't until Monday, May 29.

They just barely got our out for August this year about a month ago. This year we are starting on Aug. 14 and ending on May 24. And then they don't tell you when graduation is. Oh well, we will book first Eastern in June and hope for the best. Hope everyone else is with us.

Didn't I see the "Big Dog" Larry doing that on the 3pm deck 10 get-together????? :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :stir:

Oh Monica -- that is really scary. I hate the thought of getting out in mid June. Will make a graduation difficult. I will talk to a couple of my legislature friends and see what I can find out about the waivers. I know our district likes to start in August and end by May, but if there are no waivers, we will be in trouble.

I would also rather start early and get out early. Supposedly, seasonal jobs/tourism is driving the late start. Early August starts take away a huge chunk of the seasonal workforce.

Last year we started August 15th and didn't have 1/2 days or days off for teacher in-service. But, had 2 1/2 weeks at Christmas, one week at Thanksgiving and 1 week Spring break with a 3 day Easter Weekend. Ending school on May 25th. This year we start August 10 and end May 23 with 1/2 days and teacher in-services accounting for the the 5 day earlier start.

I can't even begin to guess what our district will decide for 2007-2008. :confused3

If we have to push back the dates we can push back together , it'll be a Texas "do-over" cruise :rotfl2:

Monica -- don't you just hate how backwards Texas can be sometimes.

Monica -- I printed off our school's schedule, this is it:

We start on Aug. 14 and then we have Monday, September 4 off
November 10 - off for Veteran's Day
November 20-24 off for Thanksgiving (this is a first for us to have the whole week off)
December 25-January 7 off for winter break
January 15 - MLK Holiday
March 12-16 (Spring Break)
April 6 (Good Friday)
May 24 - Last Day but graduation falls again on Memorial Day (May 28)for our High School

Very different from calendars in the past.

Sounds similar to the schedule up in these parts. We don't start until after Labor Day, and run until mid-June. Ugh... One of the things I'm NOT looking forward to when Erin starts public school next year. Jim was actually looking at the repo cruise (I can't believe it either, trust me), and I don't think we could pull Erin out of school for it... (Of course, the other hurdle would be coming up with the 10 G's it would cost!)

Graduation ON Memorial Day? What's up with that?

Well, looks like we are getting a good following for booking an Eastern in 2008. Our stupid school district does not come out with the school schedule until next spring. Don't they know I will miss my early booking window!!!!!

We did the Eastern in November 2005 - any questions????

We took a tour on our own of St. Maartin and a dive trip in St. Thomas...
