38th Annual DIS Cranberry Sauce Debate Thread

Either the canned or fresh made from the grocery store works fine. No one ever eats more then a small spoonful of it and just one of those 'other' side dishes for Thanksgiving. Don't bother making it since very little gets used and most ends up in the trash. Rather spend the time making things people will actually eat/enjoy.

Canned, jellied here. Hard to find this year so far. Ollie's last flyer had the large cans of Ocean Spray on sale for less than a dollar. Went into 2 different Ollies & neither had any at all. I picked up a can at WalMart a few weeks ago, then another can at Big Lots (they had a whole big display of the stuff) last week. Then my daughter asked if I would bring cranberry sauce to our Thanksgiving dinner at her house this year. I love it, she loves it & a couple others in the household love it also. So I head over to Big Lots after work today & not a can in sight. Go on over to Aldi (butter on sale). No sauce there either. Next into WalMart where I finally found some on the top shelf back behind the whole berry kind. Grabbed 4 more cans just to be on the safe side, lol.

I prefer homemade cranberry sauce.

However, because there are some who like the canned jellied stuff, I also buy that & serve both homemade & the canned jellied stuff.

Canned, jellied with the lines! I will also eat canned whole berry, but jellied is vastly preferred. I cannot stand homemade cranberry sauce w/orange in it. SO bitter.

Homemade or canned? Jellied or whole berry? Say anything you want cranberry related: juice, bogs, vitamin supplements, craisins, etc.

My family has always preferred canned jellied. A few times at Turkey Day gatherings someone had the audacity to bring homemade and it didn’t go over too well.

I really only want a small amount but this time of year the big can is often on sale for less than the small can.

Will not eat canned cranberry sauce. Only homemade. It’s so easy to make.

DH eats only the canned jelly - must have the "schloop" sound.
I prefer canned whole berry, but I love cranberries so much
I'll try anyone's cranberry sauce ::yes:: .

We had a catered Thanksgiving dinner recently with our RV group. The cranberry sauce was in those little plastic doggie bag cups (like just for dips), about 1 tablespoon's worth. I took 2, even though I could tell it was whole berry, not jellied, as I like a bite of cranberry sauce with a bite of turkey when I eat it.

Oh, Boy!!!! It was bitter. Don't know where the chef got the recipe, but he forgot the sugar. Or something.

I was happy the gravy was good, though. After two bites (one from each cup) of the cranberry sauce I wound up using the gravy as my added flavor to my turkey.

The last few Thanksgivings, I’ve made homemade cranberry sauce with sugar, orange and orange zest. Growing up, we always had jellied. It’s not my favorite thing to eat.

I make homemade and can it so I have it all year. The pre-made can I sometimes use in a crockpot recipe (mix one can cranberries with one jar orange marmalade pour over Turkey breast and cook on low) I then serve it with my homemade cranberries.

I cook the cranberries! We have a can of jellied on the table as well for someone who would prefer that kind.

Off season when I can’t find fresh cranberries, I buy the whole berry can.

My husband is the only person in our family who likes cranberry sauce, and he prefers the canned plain stuff. I made it homemade a couple times, and he complained.

My only complaint: it hasn't been on sale this year!
