I can tell you from experience that the size of the can of hairspray makes a difference. I travel frequently for work, and have never had an issue, except one time when I bought a giant can of Sebastian Shaper (don't remember how many ounces it was, it was just wayyy bigger than normal, it was even hard to use since the can was almost too big and heavy to pick up with one hand!!) was removed from a checked bag.
Ironically, it was fine when I checked it in at PIT with me standing there, and made it to my destination. But the airport I left from to get home was the kind where they take your bags and scan them elsewhere. Well, needless to say, when I got home I found that my hairspray had been removed from the bag (I was quite upset since it was only a week old and cost $20 or so) with a note in its place, with no instructions on how to get it back. Oh well! Lesson learned......no more giant cans of hairspray for me!!!!!
