3 OKW Pools to be Refurbished

According to the most recent issue of All Ears:

Three of OKW's pools are scheduled to be refurbished:

Sport Pool 2 (Turtle Shack) - Closed May 1-9
Sport Pool 1 (Building 19) - Closed May 12-23
Sport Pool 3 (Building 56) - Closed May 28-June 6

Haven't seen any mention of this - if it's old news, I apologize.

No - I haven't heard it - I though DVC was surpose to notify us???? Of course I am not going in May - but I still though they would notify us - they have our email addresses right - so did I not get something?

I am going in May and this comes as news to me. Are these the only pools at OKW?

no there is a main pool - HH not on that list.

Maybe, spiceycat, since the refurbishment dates don't overlap - thus meaning only one pool will be out of commission at a time - they didn't feel they needed to inform us "officially."

I would suspect that if the large pool were going to be closed - we'd probably hear abou it, though...

It looks like they are shutting down one pool per week. They are probably just doing yearly maintenance, i.e, paint/repair. With the main pool and 2 other pools open at all times it doesn't seem like notification is necessary. It may also be forthcoming in the April "Member Clubhouse" or on the web site as notification. We just have our "spies".

Nobody does it like Disney! They keep our investment in our DVC worth top dollars, it's always beautifully maintained. For this I am very happy. Just wish OKW could get a pool slide!!! I wish I was among the ones that got to vote on that a few years ago. Maybe some day, we will get a really great slide at our main pool!

I wish for a slide for the main pool too - but I don't think that will ever happen - not with pool hopping -

the last time this site did a poll for the slide - only about 30% (?)of OKW say they wanted - the same % that wanted it on the originally DVC poll.

You realize if they did put a slide in OKW that your fees would go up - it takes a lot to operate a slide - the daily cost of a life guard and the upkept of slide, plus turning it on or off each day, checking it out - etc. Of course this is not very likely in the future.

Thanks for the welcome Nick & Cindy! Spicey Cat (Pat J) Thanks for the reply. I do understand that our monthly dues would go up, but I feel that it would be well worth it! OKW has the best rooms, why not the best slide & pool! We also own at BW & just bought at BC. OKW people are selling their points for less than BW, and one of the reasons I think is there is little to do at the home resort. We love OKW's spacious rooms & quiet surroundings, just wish for the best pool to be there too!

Candy & Bob, if you want to be truely welcomed to the board, you need to start a thread something to the effect of " Does OKW need a pool slide ? " Or even better: "How come OKW owners are too cheap to want a pool slide ?" Then in a day or so someone can explain what that little "lock" is next to your topic.

I think BW sells for more because of its location - not the pool.

BCV will be a good test - they should sell for about the same as BWV in the resale market - if they sale for more (which I really think will happen) - then it is the POOL!

OKW was a test that Disney did - I think if it did not go well for Disney - they would have parted company with OKW. My first guide make sure that I understood that Disney might not manage OKW forever. Of course it those days it was the Disney Vacation CLub not OKW.

But I still want a DVC on the monrail - any monrail!!!

I agree with spicycat, the BWV sells for more because of the location, the pool increases the value somewhat but not nearly as much as the location. I also agree with you that a pool slide and even a complete remoderization of the main pool at OKW would greatly enhance the main pool area BUT this is a very controversial topic here on the DIS. There are many OKW owners that are totally against this. This is a topic that has been debated ad nausam on this board. The actual dues increase would be very small compared to the benefits the enhanced pool would reap let alone how it would enhance the HH/main pool area but many OKW members will not even consider such an idea. I personally can't understand it.

I peronally would be in heaven if Stormalong Bay could be transplanted to OKW. I have come to love OKW, but this is DESPITE the cheesy pool, not because of it! I have two small children and Stormalong Bay is a powerful lure. I would never think that adding a slide and a lifeguard at the main pool would cause upset -- there are three other quiet pools -- but I know you veterans swear it's been a big debate issue before!

So I will just dream on... and imagine a great pool like SAB at my favorite, OKW.

Thanks to all for the great welcome to the board! As you can tell I'm new to this site! We've been member in DVC since 1997, but never knew about this site.
KNWVIKING, you had me going..... looking all over for the lock! Yes, I did change the subject, I'm sorry!! Learning the rules! I did not know that there has been a debate about the pool at OKW.
I was just wishing.
Spiceycat & DeeP are probably right but I agree with Colleen, I would love to see a SAB at OKW.!!!

If pool hopping continues, then the Saratoga Springs pool will be an easy option for OKW guests. That will give a pool slide option within walking distance to those who want it and keep the OKW pools as originally designed.
