Me, Sandee - 55
DD Julie - 35
DGrD Maggie 11
mom - 79 (reminded me she's not 80 until May!)

This was our 5th cruise and Mom's 1st
I worried for months about her ability to walk and her diet limitation

Day 1 highlights -
seeing mom's face when we pulled into the terminal
She went straight over to goofy, her favorite Disney character, and told him " Honey, I love a man in uniform!" He of course started swooning over her and she loved every minute of it
We went to the end of the line to await my DD who was returning our rental car to Avis. The line was very, very, long, but boarding went so quickly we had to get out of line and keep going to the back as we didn't want to board without Julie. I work in a bldg. that houses concerts, shows, etc. and I have never seen a line move here at work as fast as that embarkation line.
seeing the Coast Guard escort us out of the port - we knew the war was going to start any day and it felt great seeing them along side the Wonder
meeting our servers Wayan and Cornelia. They were really special.
having Richard, another server from a cruise we took 2 years ago come up and remember us as the "Creme Brulee" ladies. He even asked where the other lady was (my aunt sailed with us 2 yrs. ago) He remembered we all loved the creme brulee. Later Meika, another server came over and introduced us to his wife. He'd been our asst. server 18 mos. ago and was engaged to marry another server a few weeks after our cruise. It felt like old home week. After dinner, even though we weren't in Tritons, Wayan brought us each 2 creme brulee with another plate with 3 more to take back to the room (Maggie doesn't care for it)
I was the only one who enjoyed Hercules. Mom and Maggie were tired and Julie said she'd seen it too many times.
Got to meet DISer Natt and her DH
Day 1 lowlights -
Mom didn't realize she'd forgotten her birth certificate until the limo I'd hired to surprise her and Maggie was pulling into the driveway. She'd taken it out of her purse to show me at her house earlier in the day and left it on her kitchen table. Julie ended up driving her car to mom's house in Delaware, grabbing the paper work and meeting a friend at his house near BWI. He drove her to BWI and she got on the plane with 1 minute to spare - they were just getting ready to close the door.
Later Julie was coming out of a 7-11 and bent over by our rental van to tie her shoe. Maggie didn't see her and slammed the van sliding door shut on Julie's head. It knocked her out for a few seconds and people came running as she was sprawled out next to the gas pump. We debated if she should see a dr. before boarding, but the attendent brought her out a baggie of ice and she took some advil and off we went. She had a big knot on the top of her head where door caught her and for some reason one side of her face ached for several hours, but she was okay.

Day2 highlights
I won at bingo...wish it'd been a little later in the trip, but hey, $39 is $39!
Spent the day relaxing aboard ship with my mom while Julie and Maggie went into Nassau. They took horse and carriage tour and enjoyed it.
Creme brulee - Because Richard told our current waitstaff how they better give us lots of creme brulee or they'd have to answer to him, we were brought creme brulee again. While this was one of the highlights it was also a low light as you'll see later LOL. Again,Wayan brought all 3 adults 2 creme brulees each (Maggie doesn't like it) and a plate with 3 more to take back to our room. I hope you math fans are keeping track of # of creme brulees.

I enjoyed adult pool area with mom while Julie keep Maggie busy at Goofy pool. Enjoyed comedy show, especially when he mentioned he'd graduated from U of Del. - my employer. Like everyone else he poked fun at our mascot , "the fightin' Blue Hen". He also said I bet all you kids are having fun pushing every button in the elevators. I think lights bulbs must have lit up over 2/3 of the kids in the audience's heads. This wasn't a problem until after this show and it continued throughout our trip.
* biggest highlight* Mom and I were on deck 4 watching people disembark and head into Nassau when we each felt a tap on our shoulder. It was Mickey and Goofy in their naval uniforms. I kind of backed away and they took turn waltzing with my mom. Thank goodness we had our camera. People on the ship next to us and people walking along the dock were pointing, clapping and enjoying seeing this little gray haired lady waltzing away with Mickey and Goofy. This was the one thing she talked about to everyone she met afterwards. Another bit of Disney Magic
Low light Day 2
More kids were running around unsupervised then I'd ever seen before. As I said, the" push every button on the elevator" trick really got bad after the comedy show and continued to get worse each day after that. Kids were only 8 -10 yrs. old and they'd come running up and jump in to the elevators before the doors were all the way open. They ran across my mom's feet once and she had tears in her eyes. I lost it - I just told them to get off the elevator! You just made an 80 yo woman cry...are you happy?? I kind of felt bad later, if kids have no adult supervision at all, after awhile this kind of thing is going to happen-didn't their parent's ever check on them? We even saw these kids at 1 a.m. playing on the elevators one night/morning after Julie and I took a late night stroll.
Our asst. server saw us at Beach Blanket American buffet (you're right Barb - really good. She brought us each 2 creme brulee's from somewhere. How do we say enough is enough without hurting anyones feeling???LOL

Highlight Day 3
Had no problem getting mom out to beach at Castaway Cay. Julie and Maggie went ahead and got shady spot with chairs and they stopped at the guest service booth on the island. The CM radioed someone and a golf cart picked mom and me up and drove us to entrance to beach where we'd agreed to meet. In a min. or two Julie was there and mom had no trouble getting to our spot.
She loved it. We got the same door to door service back to the ship.
More beautiful every time I get to visit here.
Got some real bargins in ship's Gift shops later that night. Look for the sales
got to say a quick hello to EMt-319. Julie had actually started a conversation with him on an elevator earlier and mentioned her mom was addicted to DIS board. She's always amazed when we meet other DISers

lowlights Day 3
I am not a picky eater - in fact, I use to look forward to Cookies BBQ to get some regular old picnic food to eat, but I think the food here gets worse each time.
Ribs were just bones and fat with bbq sauce on them, corn soggy and tasteless, cheeseburger cold, tasteless and cheese isn't melted at all. No all beef hot dogs, no relish. Salads were bland. I didn't try lobster burger but folks next to us said it was mostly filling, very little lobster and a little fishy tasting. Even the banana bread was dry as dust. We did enjoy the choc. chip cookies and the fresh fruit. Hey, it was 40ish back home and I was in a warm tropical paradise, so it didn't ruin the day, but food needs some work. ( Julie said at least there's no creme brulee!!)
At dinner Wayan brought up each 2 creme brulee's and a plate with 3 more to take back to the room with us. Later there was a knock at our cabin door and there was Ida, our room attendant and I'll be darn if he wasn't carrying a plate with 3 more creme brulees - he just said," someone in kitchen say you like this."

highlights of day 4
My beloved grand dtr. is so very, very shy. She has been talking about singing at family kareoke for weeks, but I would have bet my life savings she wouldn't do it. Well, she got up and sang something called "Wide Spaces" by the Dixie Chicks ( I don't care for C&W music, so I'd never heard it before) Here was this incredibly shy kid singing in this sweet voice in front of a room full of strangers. She got a big hand and was thrilled. If that wasn't Disney magic nothing ever will be.
got packing done early so we could enjoy the last night.
NO CREME BRULEE. Wayan's appologized over and over and we kept saying, pls. don't feel bad - it's okay.
Rebooked for 9/28 - just me, mom and Julie. My mom drug me over to the desk and said "we want another cruise!". Candice who rebooked it asked if I had a travel agency I wanted it turned over to and I said Dreams Unlimited. She had a lot of great things to say about DU and especially Donna. I told her they're #1 in my opinion too.
Mom enjoyed every meal. She has IBS so she has to watch what she eats, but she found something each night. A couple nights she got soup off kid's menu, but veggies in it were very undercooked, so she just ate the noodles and chicken broth. She also loves Creme brulee so she never went to be hungry.
no lowlights today except for knowing we'd be leaving this wonderful ship (no pun intended) the next morning. We did have a sewer smell in our bathroom tonight, but I just took a glass and poured water into the little floor drain - I poured 3 glasses of water to be exact, and odor left in no time flat. We have the same problem in locker rooms at work, and water always does the trick.

Thanks for the report. I enjoyed reading it.

Good idea about the bathroom, too!

Thanks!

Great trip report, Sandee! I totally agree with you about the food on CC. It just has not seemed up to par on recent cruises, IMHO. Parrot Cay is usually also open for lunch from 12 to 1:30 on CC day. On my next cruise I am going to give that a try. I've heard that on that day they serve basically the same food as on CC, but with a few additions. At least maybe the food won't be sitting around as long.

I hope meet you on the 9/28!

I just loved your trip report! and the special moments your mom had with the characters. I think it's great.

Two of my fondest memories of vacations is when I took my mom to WDW (just the two of us) and the other is when my husband and I took the neighbor's kid on a 3-day Wonder cruise. Wonderful memories!!!

So, when's your next cruise? You're hooked aren't you.

Tina :)

Sandee... that little story brought tears to my eyes!

Also Mom waltzing with the characters while the other ship passengers looked on!

Thanx for sharing... welcome home

I'm glad you all enjoyed my report, esp. the parts about my mom. Less then 12 hrs. after I posted this, mom had a stroke. She has finally stabilized and will be transferred to another hosp. for rehab. on Monday. Her speech was only slightly affected by the stroke and the 1st thing she asked was for one of us to tape a picture she'd had developed at the 1 hr. photo shop of her and Goofy and Mickey, arm-in-arm onto her bed. She saidlooking at that picture is going to get her through rehab so she'll be able to walk onto the Wonder on Sept. 28th. A remarkable lady I am proud to call MOM!

Thank you for the trip report.

Best wishes for a complete recovery for your mom. With her spirit and attitude she'll probably be leading the line to board your next cruise. God bless.

I LOVED your trip report! You really and truly have brought that 'Magic' of a DCL cruise to my heart! And tears to my eyes!

I am not a real country music fan myself. But I do love 'Wide Open Spaces'!

Blessings, and of course Pixie Dust for your dear Mom! I would like to consider rescheduling my 9/21 cruise to 9/28 to have that day at sea. If by chance that were to happen, then I would definately be honored to meet you, Julie, and your Mom! I am sure that Mickey and Goofy are just waiting for another waltz! And I know that she will be there, with bells on!!!

I just wanted to thank you for the words of encouragement for mom. She is doing okay. Her speech is no longer slurred and if you put your hand under her left foot you can feel her pushing against your hand. So far no improvement with her arm but she's so proud of her foot "trick" as she calls it that her enthusiasm is contagious - she is going to beat this and be her old self for the cruise in Sept. Wishing on a star, if you decide to go for the extra sea day and sail 9/28, we'd be honored to meet you too. I've never met a DIS fan who wasn't nice.

Great report thanks! I really loved the comments about your DM interaction with the characters. I wish I could have seen it, I know I would have had a huge smile on my face :)

I hope your photo's turn out great and I know the memories you all have will last a life time.

Thanks for the great report. Hope your mom is doing better.

Sandee,

I so enjoyed your trip report. Your mom's special moments also got me a little misty-eyed. What an inspiration she is! God bless her and sending lots of pixie dust & wishes for a full recovery. How special it will be when she walks back on the ship for her 2nd cruise!

I am planning a New Year's eve cruise on the Wonder w/ my DH, 2 teens, neice and my 76 year old mom. Mom is a little apprehensive since she also has some stomach problems, tires out easily and has some mobility issues. Reading about the golf cart at CC in your report put my mind to ease at least about CC.

Thanks so much for your report. I'm going to print it out and give it to Mom to read. I think it will help ease any worries she has about our cruise.

God Bless!:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Daisy2000, thanks for your kind words. Trust me, nobody was more nervous about her 1st cruise then my mom, and her next one is her favorite topic. This next cruise will be a little different as mom will be using a cane or wheelchair, but she already has her agenda worked out. Your mom will love it. I also asked for a copy of kids menu each night in case mom couldn't find an entree on the reg. that she felt would agree with her stomach. You can also ask them to leave sauces off if she feels they're too rich. I envy you being on a cruise for New Years eve....have a great time.
Also, if you are flying, make sure your mom stand and stretches her legs a time or two during the flight. Mom's dr. and other people have told me about a AJM article about blood clots forming during long flights. Especially important for older folks who have poorer circulation.
