???????????????

I was taught that it violates one of the 10 commandments and and have enough of my religious upbringing left in me to find it distasteful. No one at my house uses the phrase, and I would definitely suggest not using it if my kids did. Just the fact that many people find it offensive is enough reason IMO.

I never used to think anything of saying this. Now I see it as using the Lords name in vain. Others can say it without offending me, but I am responsible for the words that come out of my mouth, so I am trying to stop. It is a hard habit to break though.

I do find it interesting that referencing a sexual act is generally considered less offensive that referencing God when cussing (at least in this country, I wouldn't recommend you try it in the middle east).

LOL:D .......As the saying goes,

GOD DIDN'T MAKE NO JUNK

or as EROS sees it, if GOD didn't "approve" of orgasmic delight, we wouldn't have orgasms:jester: :jester: :jester: .

Sooooooooooooooo, it's entirely appropriate for us to thank him after experiencing ectasy :) :) :) ..........

As usual, WDWHound said it way better for me than me! LOL

Perfect. Thanks, Hound.

I don't say it unless something really awful happens and then I like to think I am seriously calling on God's help. I realize most people to not intend to offend, however, with that phrase and find it much less offensive than asking God to Damn.

This is the same God that you don't believe in, right?

For those who believe in God and therefore believe in trying to keep the 10 commandments it is considered to be taking the Lord's name in vain.

I am still working on breaking the habit.

Actually, Sweetie, I don't ever plan on hearing you utter ANYTHING in BED. ;) ;) ;)

I never take my Lord's name lightly and feel that uttering that phrase would be derogatory to Him. It is like using that name of someone that I love in a negative manner.

I cannot control what others say but I can control what I say.

I don't say it.

<font color=navy>I'm another one who finds it offensive. I cringe when I hear it, and don't allow it in my house with my kids or their friends - when they are in my house.... of course, my dad could care less how I feel about it & will say it just to bug me.

I know this is personal, and so I don't judge others when they say it - but, I still don't allow it in my home. :)

... & I tend to spell out OMGosh so there is no misunderstanding what I mean.

Just as Mary Jo said, it makes me cringe. I consider it taking the name of the Lord in vain.

Now, my 2 cents ~ I don't find it offensive or 'curse' but, I do think it's inappropriate for children. They don't always understand the full meaning of what they're saying. I use the phrase sparingly, only when I really mean it, as in remarking about a particularly horrendous thing I've heard, coupled with saying a prayer for that situation.

"Oh, My God, please comfort/bless/give strength" etc. Never in vain tho, to the best of my ability. :o I AM human tho.

And, DD told me earlier that a Pre-K classmate was 'in trouble' for saying Oh My Gosh! I guess this private, religious school also frowns upon the obvious reference as well. jmo, DD can say OMGosh (at home) but not OMG.

Personally, I've been trying to just stop at "OH MY!" and, follow with a prayer, if needed. ;)

I truly don't like it either. I don't say it, and my kids don't say it either.

I don't like the variants on Jesus either.

I would say it in prayer, or during a song in church... there is a portion that say O My God, I trust in thee.... but that is the only time I use the phrase.

Why is saying OMG taking the Lord's name in vain more so than just saying something like "from your mouth to God's ears," "Jesus loves me," or some other phrase. Should we just not use God's name at all unless we're praying? I don't understand what makes that blasphemous and other things not.

"from your mouth to God's ears" is a new one to me. As far as "Jesus loves me", that is a praise. "JHC" is not.

Think of it this way, someone saying "Sharon loves me" is different than someone using your full name (including middle name), right? Even more so if they use a false middle name or swear word instead.

I wouldn't say something like "Allah is a moron" or "Buddha is a little b****" or whatever & I would expect someone to be offended if I did. I would expect the same courtesy where my beliefs are concerned.

Sharon, i'd have no problem with the phrase if i thought most people were actually offering up a little prayer to God at the moment, but since i doubt they are, i think it's inappropritate.

I consider it borderline swearing and would
not allow my DS to say it. I say gosh or goodness.
I was taught that invoking the Lord's name was
not to be done "in vain" or lightly. It is especially
not attractive coming from a child IMHO.

My mother hated that phrase when we were kids, and did not allow us to say it. She'd rather us say the worst of cuss words than Oh My God. As a result, I don't say it as an adult, only because I was programmed not to. My kids don't say it either, we say Oh My Gosh.

I don't like it and try not to do it, but I don't consider it cursing either. It just feels like disrespect to me and that's something I try to teach my children not to do. When I was a child I heard a lady say, "My word!" and that kind of stuck with me. I say that all the time.
