214 sq ft?

That is the size of a cat 9 stateroom, how big is that? Anyone know how squishy that would be?

Not squishy at all, plenty of room for two adults and two children.
They really are a great size for a stateroom. And of course the split bath is wonderful.

I have stayed in a verandah cabin (on Deck 6 - cat 6 I believe) and a catagory 9 and to me the only difference space wise was the verandah itself. I didn't measure it off, but I just didn't feel any difference in size.

Just my humble opinion.

I believe that DCL (and most other cruise lines) includes the area of the verandah in their square footage numbers. That could be why a cat 6 and a cat 9 "felt" about the same size.

Sound dinky doesn't it!! They really are ok size wise. Two adults and two kids fit in quite nicely. And the split bath makes getting ready for dinner much easier.

We'll have our two DSs with us when we cruise next summer, and they'll both be teenagers by then. DS15 is already bigger than DH and I, and DS12 is almost bigger than I am, so cabin size was a consideration for us.

First we were booked into a cat. 9, and I know it would've been fine, especially with the split bathroom, and the privacy curtain between the two sleeping areas. But after giving it some more thought, we decided to upgrade ourselves to a cat. 6. I know this cabin is the same size as the cat. 9's, but we think having the ability to step outside on the verandah will also help with the space issue. Also, this is our first family cruise and we think having the verandah will make it that much more special.

To calculate square feet, just multiple the length X the width. So a 12 X 12 room is 144 square feet. I would guess the staterooms are probably 18 x 12 (18 feet long & 12 feet wide = 216 sq feet) .. pretty close to 214

Does not seem very big when it is mentioned in sq.ft terms, but a 18 X 12 room is pretty long.

I think outahere is right about including the verandahs, because a stateroom with a verandah, regular or navigator's, is listed as 268 sq. ft.

I guess I wasn't too clear when I compared a cat 6 to a cat 9..... I meant that the size of the actual room probably felt about the same in both categories.

According to the DCL web site, cat 8, 9 and 10 cabins are 214 square feet. Cat 5, 6 and 7 are listed at 268 square feet. The difference between them is 54 square feet, which is about the size of the verandah.

You are right. The size of the INTERIOR rooms dimensions is the same. Just add the Verandah space and you get the 268 sq ft. (I guess that means the verandah is about 54 sq. ft).


As to feel, I understand it's alot bigger than other lines, especially on the older ships (e.g. rccl)

You are right about the older ships. We had a Junior Suite on the Norway and it was not as big as a cat 4 on DCL, and could only sleep 2 people.

I'll never forget when I was 11 and we moved to Europe we sailed to England (yes, it was a long time ago) on the German Ship MS Europa.

As we were decidedly "2nd class passengers", in hindsight I am amazed at how big the rooms were on the old-old ships. We had sitting areas, huge dressers, etc.

Or was it I was just small......?

I am impressed at 18' X 12', that is a DECENT size stateroom...they told me there is a Q bed in there and a single sleeper and also one of those hickeydoodles that pull out of the wall...? is that correct?? We have 2 reserved for 6 peoples...and the rooms are attached. I have kids everywheres!!LOL (eek )

Please remember that that 18 x 12 room includes the split bathrooms, closet and small hallway next to the bathrooms. so the living area is actually more like 12 x 12, or in my guestimate more like 10 x 14.

Cruise cabins are laid out quite well, and there is a ton of storage space tucked in everywhere, so they aren't bad at all unless you are expecting a cabin to be more like a hotel room.

I read a review one time where the person was so upset because they had expected it to be comperable to a hotel room. They were very upset they couldn't leave their suitcase open and live out of it, rather than unpacking and putting the suitcases away. That is what they do in hotel rooms, and hated that they couldn't do that in a cruise cabin.

Thinking back to my last cruise (an SPR), I bet that the rooms are not much over 11 feet wide (small headboard 6", bed 6' 6", couple of feet for a walkway, and about 20" for the closet/desk/other stuff on that wall for a total of 10' 8", That leaves several inches for estimates that are way off of the mark.)

That being said, the rooms are much longer than they are wide.

The rooms are really only about 8.5' wide. One third of the room, the part you first walk into, is the closet, hall and baths. The second 1/3 is the bed area with the small cabinet(bar area). The beds are about (standard length) 6' with about 2.5' to the wall. The remaining 1/3 +- is the cabinet with the ref., desk and sofa area. As an example, while trying to get my 29" suitecase under the bed, I could not lay it down flat at the end of the bed to slide it under. Would not fit. I had to pick up the bed and slide it under from the side of the bed. So its more like 8.5' x 25'. They do have a decent amount of storage and getting around the room is not bad at all!
