2017 Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend

Q about the marathon.... I am new to exercise and weight loss, but I really want to try to do it. Will there be other "fluffy" girls like me?

Yes there will be - so don't feel like people will stare or judge. They're busy running their own race :)

You've got about 5-6 months to train, so get on a great training planning and stick with it. Start slowly and work your way up. runDisney has great training programs for you to work with so that by February you'll be ready to rock. Check them out here: http://as1.wdpromedia.com/media/run...ncess-half-marathon/2017_PRN_Galloway_Beg.pdf

They're suggesting starting October 25th, but why not start sooner? You're already in mid-August and that's two extra months of muscle build up you'll gain (woohoo!) That'll give you more time to adjust from going to Couch to Half Marathon. Make sure you buy a pair of running shoes from a store that specializes in running shoes (ie: Roadrunner Sports) -- they can check your feet to make sure your shoes support your feet and the way you run. :)

You got this! Don't be worried!

Loved your reply to Princess Kelbelle ! I am a small gal but always have all sizes of running sisters passing me in the race and I say " you go girls...save me a drink at the end !"

I always start my official training early...makes me feel like I am in the groove !

Question about training...I'm doing all 3 races for Princess. My first race was the Dark Side 5k in April. I've been running/walking for a few years, but I haven't done anything more than 5 miles or so, and that's only been a couple times. Mostly I do a 5k route through my neighborhood 2-4 times a week. So I decided to look at the training plan for Princess and start working on it now so I can get the hang of it. And because I am worried I won't be able to increase my time, because I have been stuck at around 40 minutes for my best 5k pace for what seems like forever. So using the Galloway plan for the GSC, am I understanding it correctly that the two maintenance runs during the week are at whatever pace I choose, and the long run on the weekend is to be at the slower pace of no huffing and puffing? I don't know why I am having a hard time comprehending exactly what I should be doing...I'm not good at reading directions and getting it...much better at learning by doing. Hopefully this makes sense. I'll take any tips or advice for following the training plan. Want to be as prepared as I can be by the time race weekend arrives. Very excited about it...celebrating the big 50 that weekend, so completing all 3 races is my challenge to myself for this big birthday.

That's me too. :D

Proud 3 hour half marathoner here and I am so impressed by ladies (and men) of all sizes that can run faster than me! One day I hope to keep up with them... and the ones who are slower or struggling? I always try to give some encouragement as I pass. Runners are awesome. :lovestruc

Exactly how does submitting you pace time work-It's a pace time for a 10K, did I understand they use that to calculate what predicted 1/2 marathon time would be? If I recall, it said 2hr 45 min. I assume that's the time for a 1/2? Basically I want to know what my time has to be for a 10K in order to be in a better corral position.

I'll start with the link.

rD uses this (or something real similar) to estimate your half marathon timing based on your 10K.

its pretty straight forward and in my past races, was pretty accurate on determining corral.

Now let me back up. If you're just entering your 'pace' and not a proof of time, it's a crap shoot on whether you'll get placed on what you entered or what they verify. (If that makes sense)

Brian

So, if I'm doing this right you must submit a time of 2hr 45 min to be placed in a better corral (for starting time) and using the McMillianrunning.com I have to have a pace of 12 min 36 sec per mile???? I'm just trying to see if it is worth trying to get a 10K completed before Nov. 15th. and if that is possible for me at this point to even make that pace time.

That is exactly right.

(with the caveat that Disney can do whatever they really want .... but in theory, yes)

For basis of comparison, I'm running the half as well. My only proof of time is a full at 5 hr 15 min. This will translate to a ballpark time of 2:29-ish for the half, 11:26 pace.

If you can get a faster 10K, I would try .... if nothing else, it's a good workout!

I hope this helps and if you have more questions, just ask!

Exactly. There are a lot of experiences, which makes me wonder how they actually do corral placement. The way I look at it...it doesn't hurt to submit a proof of time. Any time is better than no time.

Just booked our flights for our PHM trip (arriving Friday, and staying the whole week, leaving Saturday --- prices were creeping up and options were selling out) -- can't wait!! Now it feels even more real. I realized that our 180 days for dining reservations is coming up this week, but I have no idea what to book!

I can offer you a pacing suggestion. Given your 5K time of around 40 minutes these are the paces I would suggest training at:

Screen Shot 2016-08-22 at 8.47.34 AM.png

Weekend long run at 15:41 min/mile
Galloway weekday runs at least one at Easy (16:13-17:18 min/mile) and the other can be a mix of 5K pace (12:52 min/mile) and M Tempo (14:38 min/mile).

The key for transitioning from a 5K up to a HM or a Challenge Weekend is building your endurance. The best way to build endurance and remain injury free is lots of slower running. The easy runs should almost feel like you're barely trying. In the end, you should finish every training run feeling like you could have done one more interval or one more mile. I'm a big advocate for training at slower relative fitness paces so if you want more information why just let me know.

I also help others create custom running training plans based on their goals and availability to train so let me know if you'd like to see what I can come up with for you.

Hi all!
Very new to the world of running. Doing my first 5k in February at Disney World! Just trying to make some plans and wondering how much time I should expect to spend getting to and from the race. I see on the website it says board the bus no later than 5am for 6am race. After the race is done how long can I expect it to take to get back to my resort (staying at Saratoga Springs). Using a couch t0 5k app right now and loving it! Never thought I would be a runner. Thanks for the help!

No clue - all of the above (except we're at OKW) are true for me too!

It's sort of hard to say - I think it's different for everyone because you have to factor in your starting corral and your anticipated pace per mile.

Lately runDisney has been having 6 corrals for the 5Ks (A - F), 8-10 minutes between corrals.

So...going with the absolute longest-case scenario, if you will...

Let's say you're in corral F - it's possible that you won't actually start your race until close to 7AM (corral A starts at 6AM, then B starts 8-10 minutes later, etc.). With the maximum pace allotment of 16:00/mile, we all have 50 minutes (give or take) to finish - so if you're in F, you'd have until, say, 7:50 or so to finish the race. The buses in general are not that bad, but if you finish at the same time as a bunch of others, it's possible you'd have to wait a bit for your bus to come. Normally they do a good job of having multiple buses ready to go at the finish line, though. They also have characters out in the finish area for most races, so that's another factor - do you want to meet characters after the race? Saratoga isn't crazy far from Epcot (ditto for Old Key West) so I'd guess it won't take crazy long to get back.

So lots of variables to think about, I guess! It's different for everyone. :)

This is true. It depends on your corral, how fast you run or walk, and how many times you stop. There's no way to say. I also would definitely not wait to get on the bus until 5. 5 is the last chance to get on the bus, I believe is what they mean.

I spectate the Princess half in 2014 and we missed the bus from WL - at 4:50! They cut it a little early. Arg!

I did my first 5k in April, at the Dark Side. We stayed at Pop, and boarded the bus around 4:30. We started in the last corral...I was in second to last, hubby in last, so I moved back so we could start together. I think we started around 6:30 and crossed the finish line around 7:15. We didn't do any photo ops on the route...long lines. And we didn't stop at the end and get any pics either. We grabbed our medal, race box, water and sat down to eat and drink for a bit. Then walked to where the busses were and were probably back at Pop by 8:30 at the latest. Showered and headed to Magic Kingdom...got there around 10:30 I'd guess.

You're speedy! I was injured, limping, and stopped for photos. It took me over an hour.
