2014 Disneyland 1/2 Marathon Weekend ** Check-In ** Updated 7/29 with Corral Info

Hi there,

I'm brand new to this forum and am hoping for some advice! I did the Tinkerbell 10K last Feb and am now training for the 1/2! However, I was out with the stomach flu this weekend and missed the 6.5 mile run :(

Any advice on what to do? Try to run it asap? Run it instead of a 30 min run this week? Any thoughts or input is appreciated!

Thank you :)

-Marisa

First of all, welcome!

Second of all, sometimes things happen and you're gonna miss a run. It's not the end of the world, which is the good news. It's pretty hard to follow a training schedule to the letter and not miss one here or there. What you do really depends on how you feel. Me personally, I would just redo the entire week so I don't try to throw in the 6 miles when my body may not be ready for it. There's a reason we don't just do one long run after long run after long run. Or maybe I would just skip the 6.5 miles altogether and do my shorter training runs and then just shorten my next long run by a little so I've still worked my way up to it.

Yep, plenty of time yet :thumbsup2 I'm just a bit obsessive and planning my timetable already :rotfl:

You aren't alone. I really love to get to things early no matter what it is, and I always end up stressing about what time I want to leave for these events. You've actually reminded me that this time I really should document it so I'll be more prepared for future races. I do remember that my last half I tried leaving later than I normally do and regretted it when I got there. I still picked my way to the front of the corral but it was just too late for my ... OCD? I don't even know what to call it.

We can all obsess together!

Thank you for the welcome :) I'm excited to have found this board!

And thanks for the advice as well. I was also thinking of just skipping and hoping for the best! When I began the training schedule I didn't give myself any buffer, which maybe is a lesson for next time. My next run is just a 4 mile with 1 Magic Mile, so hopefully I can use that to build up to the next one :)

How do you do your run/walk? Is it literally the music that paces you or do you have a watch/timer? I picked up one of Jeff Galloways little countdown timers that I wear on my hip to count out my intervals and even if I cheat on it a little (or a lot) I've been well within the time limits.

Belle Ella - also would you mind telling me what this countdown timer is you are referring to? And where you got it? :D

Thanks so much!!

I have a Gymboss, which sounds like much the same thing. You just enter your intervals, attach it to your waistband, and start it when you've finished your warm up. I like that it vibrates so that I never have to worry about not hearing it, but it also don't bother anyone else (so I can also use it at the gym if I want to). They come in lots of pretty colours, and you can buy them from the Gymboss website (not sure if anywhere else).

I used to just rely on my Garmin, but I used to miss the alarms a lot when cars would go past or when it was windy. Now I just use my Garmin to tell me when to turn around, and it also measures my stats for the run :thumbsup2

It is through Gymboss ;) Here's what it looks like:

It's battery powered (one AAA) and when you turn it on you get to set your intervals and how you want your alert (vibrate or beep). It clips onto your waistband or wherever is comfortable for you that you'll be able to feel when it vibrates to let you know to run or walk. Lately I've been using it up at the top of my sports bra because I wasn't always feeling it by my hips. You should be able to get one through Gymboss or if you want to wait, Jeff Galloway usually sells them at the runDisney booth at the Expos.

I've been using Jeff's training apps. You keep time with the beat of the music (you can download your own fav songs) and can change the pace and set your run/walk intervals. It's been great motivation for me but I'm wondering how it will work during the race. Will I need it? Can I use it? If I don't use it, how will I know my run/walk intervals. I'll have to get one of those little toys that tracks the intervals I guess. Anyone listen to music during the race?

By the way, did everyone get the "Welcome to the Disneyland Half Marathon" email over the past couple of days? I've been running with them since 2011 and this is the first time I've gotten one of the race emails. I'm doing an absolute happy dance.

Hopefully everyone that needed to was able to submit their proof of time as today was the deadline!

Little behind but was excited to see something regarding the race weekend. Really looking forward to my first DL trip.

I also use his training apps, but I only use them during training. That's why I got the Gymboss countdown timer-thing. I make my playlist on my phone in my SPI belt and then I have that tucked somewhere on me to notify me when to run and when to walk. But if you don't get one there's nothing wrong with using the app to keep you on pace. I just like my music to be the normal music during my actual event - especially since when I runDisney half of my music is Disney music, it would sound strange to sync it up to my pace!

:thumbsup2 Glad I could help!

This got me thinking though, what are some gadgets and accessories you have to have when you run? Training and/or for actual events?

Like I couldn't go running period without my SPI belt. And I've already got quite a collection of them so I can mix and match whenever I want. For events I also have one of their wrist pockets or whatever they are called so I don't run out of room for my car keys. Then there's the Gymboss timer to keep me on pace.

I feel like I'm forgetting something though ... :confused3

This is a good question. As someone new to all this, I'd like to know what toys are out there I might be missing

I'm in AZ so I couldn't go without my Camelbak! I bought a Gymboss that I was hoping would be delivered by today's run - but it isn't looking like it! Speaking of which - a question:

So for the assigned run to day it says "4 Miles with Magic Mile" does anyone know if this means your total is 5 miles, or 4? Didn't know if I ran 4 miles, one of those being a Magic Mile or three with one being a magic mile?

Thanks!

No gadgets for me other then my watch and my road ID(when I remember to wear it.) I'll have to check into the wrist pocket thing though. Can't do belts because they ending up annoying me.

I never go running without my Garmin, Gymboss, Fitbit and RoadID.

Timex marathon watch, RX switch vision sunglasses, earbuds and my phone, have a copy of my drivers license inside the phone case.

When I miss a long run, for whatever reason, I usually try to stay on schedule the next week and jump up to the next distance. But only if I am feeling good while out on the run. If I start to drag I might cut it a little short or walk a little, but definitely keep it above where I should have been the week before.

Personally, I love my SPIbelt because it keeps my pants up, lol! No matter what pants I buy, or how tight they are, they always slip down a bit on the waist and drive me insane. Since using a SPIbelt for my phone/ID, problem solved :).

That's part of why I ask ;) It's through discussion with other runners of all levels that have helped me find what's worked for me. I'm still hoping to learn new tips and tricks when I can and hopefully it helps another along the way!

What can't it do ;) I've tried a couple of other fitness belts in the past but I love the SPIbelt so much more for some reason.

Sunglasses are something I need to look into. But I have to get prescription which I'm worried about destroying or losing. I just can't focus on anything when I wear sunglasses, at all. I don't run in my glasses and I don't have contacts so I kind of run blind half the time. I can see far/well enough that I can see what I need to but that all goes out the window when I put on sunglasses. I should probably buck up and buy a good pair soon.

And thanks for the reminder about a driver's license/ID. All day I remind people that it's a good idea to carry your idea with you at all times and yet I always forget.

A RoadID would be a good idea too!

See, that's partially my problem with the wrist pocket depending on how long the run is. I usually end up playing hot potato with it at some point and swapping wrists because it starts to drive me batty. But sometimes I run out of space for everything I need.

I believe I read somewhere it was 4 with 1 being a magic mile

Not gonna lie, the magic mile thing still gets me confused sometimes. But I believe this is correct.

One thing I have realized now that I'm trying to run outside again (running the streets outlining Disneyland is practically the perfect distance for my short runs with Galloway's app) is that I need to find a new approach for hydrating while running. It's no issue during the events themselves, but I usually (a) forget to bring a water bottle with me or (b) when I do remember it, I get annoyed by the way it feels in my hands and how the water moves with my stride. It just throws me off. I just don't know a better way other than trying to find somewhere with water fountains or something like that.
