2014 - destash thread The Year of the Great Purge

Since the roads were so crappy yesterday, I decided to trade my trip to the gym after school for some time in the basement. I started with moving our Christmas bins back to where they belonged (not just at the foot of the stairs where DH left them). Then I tackled the gift bags. We have like 10,000 gift bags. Some probably 10 years old! My goal, is to use those puppies up! Someone suggested using them any time my kids need to bring stuff to school, LOL.

I created a new bin of xmas bags, boxes and the few left over decorations I couldn't fit anywhere else. Then I finally made a bin of our easter stuff (baskets and eggs). Then I began to tackle a box of my old things. I pulled some stuff to just throw away, and some to donate, and then I have a pile that I'm not sure what to do with. Checking ebay, the items are selling in the $10 range. With $30k in debt, every penny helps right? Do I ebay or donate?

As I was working through the stuff, I bent over and BAM something happened in my low back and now I'm walking like a 90 year old lady (I've had back issues since HS). So my basement is now a disaster zone with piles everywhere. DOH! Maybe my back will heal up fast and I can get back down there this weekend.

So small $10ish items?!?! Donate or sell?

Personally I donate a lot. If something is in great shape I will try to sell it first. After it doesn't sell that one time, then I donate it! My theory is if I can't sell it during that one try, then someone else needs it more :)

If you are somewhat experienced with buying and selling on ebay, I would try to sell. You get 50 free listings a month anyways, so it will only cost you it it sells. Every penny towards debt helps; speaking from someone who had debt too.

I finished writing up my listings from purging the closet:cool1:. DH has most of the closet finished to put everything back in (bet I'll find more to purge the second time around)

The reason I lost my mojo is I have been decluttering for 2 years now. I am entering my third year. Every week for the first year I had a pick up from the vets. 2nd year only every 2 or 3 weeks. What is amazing is how much stuff I got rid of: what is amazing is how much stuff we still have everywhere. We live in a 100 year old home with almost no storage. Everything is always out and it always looks cluttered. It was easy to start baby toys ect, harder now is the boxes of photos everywhere, paper clutter and sentimental crap lots of sentimental crap. I guess because my youngest is going to high school next year I don't want to let their childhood go.

There are quite a few blogs that I enjoy reading becoming minimalist, zen habits and be more with less. Anyone have anything else that they read to help motivate them.

I guess that's a good idea to let it try to sell on Ebay (one round) and then donate it. It's knick-knack stuff. Which honestly I had in my hand to put into the donate box right away. But I turned the items upside down to see if they had a name or stamp. And when they did, it prompted me to check out Ebay.

I've been selling on and off on Ebay for many many many years now. And with the iPad app, it's become alot easier to list something real quick.

And I learned recently that organizations like Goodwill or Salvation Army will often take clothes in ANY condition because they can sell the ripped/torn/stained stuff as rags. One less thing in the landfill!

Yes, love that! I try to bag the bad stuff together when I donate. I also send our worn out shoes for the same reason.

I worked in the basement for about an hour. Pretty much just moving things around but starting to see some progress and more floor space open! We just found out electronics recycling is anytime now in our county instead of twice a year. We have a big box in the laundry room of various electronics to recycle, and 2 old TVs. It's 25 cents per pound for the TVs, hoping they don't weigh too much!

While down there working I decided I'm sick of staring at all those bags and boxes of clothes and I want them out. Not worth the 50 cents - dollar/each. I wish there was somewhere else to donate besides Goodwill in this area. I'd rather spread donations out or at least used somewhere else different. I looked up Purple Heart that was mentioned here, but not in this area. DH took some pieces of an old desk to throw out on his way to work. The second bookshelf can be taken apart and trashed whenever he has time. I'm giving myself a month deadline to get the basement more organized so we can get an estimate on what our closet construction will cost.

When I was done having kids, I donated my pg clothes to a pg crisis center. Do you have anything like that around there?

Thanks! It's gone!! Yay!! Even if I do nothing else, I'm happy. This thread has made a difference in my life.

Of course, I plan to do more though...

Thank you all!!

I agree, thanks to everyone posting their progress!

Yesterday's purge isn't out of the house yet, but I'm working on it. I found a box in the basement marked "breakables from the china cabinet" (china cabinet was emptied and given to DD for her snowglobe collection at least 7 years ago... maybe more!) and it was full of vintage teacups, an antique Limogies pitcher, a Murano crystal bird (I think it belonged to my grandmother) and a few other dust collectors! I pulled out 2-3 tiny things and one tea cup that I want to keep and the rest can go. The teacups were originally my Mom's so I asked her if she would like them back. If she says no, then they will be posted on my FB yard sale group this weekend. I already took the photos in preparation for that.

Can't wait to see what surprises I find later today!...........P

Way to go! :cool1:

Hope your back gets better! I would list them and then donate if nothing happens by x date.

There are quite a few blogs that I enjoy reading becoming minimalist, zen habits and be more with less. Anyone have anything else that they read to help motivate them.

I love Don Aslett's books. I have Not for Packrats Only and I can really relate and get inspiration from it because it discusses the reasons why we tend to keep certain things. What blogs do you enjoy? I'd love to find some to read when I need motivation!

Well, I got 50% of my goals done. :rotfl: DD didn't go to dance and I didn't have the Goodwill donation ready anyway. I did manage to go through the freezer and tossed a grocery bag of freezer burned veggies and rolls. It was based on this thread that I made myself get it done. The shame factor is working!

The computer parts are on the schedule to take to Goodwill this weekend instead. DD19 made another pile of things she doesn't want before she returned to school so I'll take that too. When she left, I sent her with 5 textbooks that aren't worth anything. Her sorority has a study room so she is putting them in there. :thumbsup2

The other weekend goal is to put the Christmas stuff in the attic. Some is still sitting in the front room and the rest is taking up lots of garage space. It has warmed up some so we need to take advantage and get it done!

Our upper two levels are in pretty good shape, I just need to keep them picked up. I tend to have piles in the kitchen and I'm so tired of seeing them. The basement is still the project to tackle. Like pp, I have trouble getting rid of some of the kids' old toys and accepting they are teens now!

I worked yesterday so didn't get to work on anything. Today I worked in the basement for about an hour. Basically just moving more stuff around, but did eliminate some boxes and broke them down to recycle. Everything is off the broken book shelf now, so DH just needs to take it apart so we can trash it.I need to start a to do, here's a quick one off the top of my head that needs done down there...

-take bookshelf apart and trash it
-take 2 TV's to electronics recycling
-take 2 boxes of small electronics to recycle
-start listing things on ebay to sell
-bag up stuff for goodwill

Reorganized my closet and purged some. My tops were already in color order but I sorted them so they are now in color by sleeveless, short sleeves, short sleeve sweaters, long sleeves and long sleeve sweaters. Hopefully it makes it easier to decide what to wear since I won't hunting through everything. And managed to get 2 bags of clothes to donate while I was there. Rolled my camis that were in piles in my drawer so I can now see the colors and hopefully it keeps it more organized. Tackled my kitchen desk junk drawer and it's nice an organized now. Waiting for DS6 to pick up his playroom so I can play Skylanders with him. Although we really need to go through his playroom and purge. His Legos have now taken over as decorations for my formal living room.

I was so happy to have all the kids' clothes organzied and everything that was too small was sold or donated early this week. I swear my 2 year old grew overnight! So now I'm washing and hanging all his new bigger clothes and I have to get my donate bag and sell container back out, ugh!!!!! On the plus side I buy a season ahead on clerance and saved some from my older son so he has a full wardrobe and I dont need to buy anything besides a pair of sneakers (even feet grew overnight)!!

I've been lurking this thread for the last month and finally decided to make the plunge. It's amazing the amount of ***stuff*** we have accumulated.

I cleaned out my kiddos playroom and have begun to post items on our local facebook yard sale pages. I like it better than ebay - no cost involved at all and I don't have to mess with postage, boxes, etc. I just made $20 off one toy about 30 min ago:)

So, keep posting - very inspiring to see the progress!

My family picks on me because I do this. I love to roll clothes. I find my kids will wear a greater selection if rolled vs stacked. If stacked they only ever grab the top one.

Great idea on the kid's clothes. All of DS's shirts are hanging but he has way too many pants so I am off to roll them so he (or I) won't have him wearing the same ones every week.

Woke at 3:30 this morning and couldn't sleep, so I did some more purging in my closet. Went through my casual pants/jeans and was able to make 5 bags to donate to Purple Heart. Plus I found some new pants that I forgot I had so now to hang them up before they get lost again.

I am so tired, barely functioning. DS and DH are napping. I am sore from working out yesterday after hurting my back at work on Friday so not a good combo. Going to be lazy today. I'd love to take a nap, but I know if I do I'll feel worse. So to compromise I am sitting on the couch watching TV and am going to list some things on ebay that I already have pictures of.

I ordered an adapter for the car seat and it came yesterday. After church DH and I tried it out, but it's not compatible. It has free returns so back to amazon it goes. I took pictures of the car seat, bases, and stroller so I can list them on craigslist. I'll start there and see how it goes.

Just popping in to say hey. Not much purging here, DS17 had a huge indoor track meet yesterday so we were in Providence all day. Mom stayed with the little kids and they got there room cleaned. It looks great, now we need to do a purge though.
Tonight I am working on sorting my wardrobe again. All of the laundry is caught up and have no more room for socks and undergarments! So I'm purging. Then I will work in my craft room. This room is 1000% out of control, I need to reclaim it.
DH is supposed to be putting in the water line for the fridge, only been waiting on that for 2 months, but he's sitting here watching a Fast and Furious marathon. ERGH!!!!

I roll everything too! It's the only way to actually see what you have, and I find it actually fits better in the drawers.

I think it was StephMK that suggested the pregnancy crisis center? We do have one here. That's a great idea! I took pictures earlier thinking I'd list the car seat and stroller on CL but that's been on my heart so I think I will call them and see if I can donate it.

I also have a bag of formula samples and baby food that I need to take to the food bank before it expires!

Spent a few more hours down in the basement today. :cool1: It's coming along - finally! Storage shelves are up and almost everything I wanted on them fits!

We also emptied out our 2 storage freezers and had a tub of stuff that wasn't salvagable. I found a couple packs of meat at the wayyyyy bottom that were from several years ago that were completely freezer burned. 2 ice cream buckets of chicken stock that was 3 years old...all of it I tossed. Makes me so mad. Also determined that I am NOT going to put zucchini in large amounts in my garden anymore. I froze 5 big bags of shredded zucchini because I was going to use them for muffins, breads, etc. that are still sitting in there and I likely won't ever use them because my family simply won't eat them. I can only eat so much of it myself. I may see if my neighbor wants them, otherwise I will just have to toss them too...ugh.

I only have 1 area left to purge and organize to get things at least on the shelves...then I can go through the few tubs that appear to have been moved (never unpacked or gone through) several times.

DH isn't a fan of this whole project but I told him - come spring when you still don't want to do it, would you rather have a fishing pole in your hand and me not nagging you about the basement still needing done OR would you like to know that it's all done and you can fish in peace? :upsidedow

The last few days of Peter Walsh Challenges

DAY 20: SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT (AND MORE CHALLENGING) .... EMOTIONAL CLUTTER - is there someone you have fallen out of touch with and know you should re-establish contact with? This one's for you!

DAY 19: CUPS AND GLASSES (AND ALL THOSE PLASTIC DRINKY THINGS!) - today it's all about decluttering some of those cups, glasses and plastic water bottles that you're just not using and opening up a little space in your kitchen.

DAY 18: THE KIDS' TOYS (IF YOU DON'T HAVE KIDS .... WATCH THE CLIP ANYWAY FOR YOUR CHALLENGE!) - this challenge involves you AND your kids .... it's about decluttering and creating more generous children!

DAY 17: YOUR 'SPARE ROOM' OR GUEST ROOM - Most people have one room that they refer to as the spare room ..... today let's explore what clutter is hiding in there!

I am very grateful for this thread. I love that I can come here and yammer every day about my progress and to do list! Besides my husband, nobody else cares!

Hello all! Been busy with other things here at home, so the purge has taken a back seat for a few days, but I'm back on it today!

My Mom DOES want the antique tea cups back, so those are packed up in a box for her and labeled and put away (she's in FL for the winter). The rest of the stuff from the box is getting posted on the FB site today!

I also did a bit of picking up in the garage. This time of year it become the dumping ground and it is too cold to do a full clean-out, but at least I picked up a bit, swept the walking areas, and straightened up the trash/recycling area.... and WOW.... do we need a trip to the dump or what!! Guess I'll go tomorrow if I don't get called to work during the day.

I will admit I came here into the office nearly 30 minutes ago to give it a good cleaning and then got lured into the DIS! :rotfl2: But now I"m going to make a cup of tea and get to work. DS and his girlfriend are in the hot tub (yup, I can keep an eye on them from here ;) ) and when they come in I will feed them so that I can get her home before it is too late. But I think I can bang out a good portion of office cleaning in the next 30 minutes.... if I can just get off here! TTYL.................P
