2014 - destash thread The Year of the Great Purge

Lonnnnng time lurker; but this thread has inspired. I am a minimalist anyways, but this thread helps a lot (knowing its ok to be one:rotfl:).

Have spent the week listing close to 60 items from around the house on ebay. Still have a large pile to photograph.

Something I have yet to figure out what to do with is 1/2 used bottles of coffee syrups (torani), sprinkles for cookie and cakes, and food coloring. I found I haven't used any of this stuff for months/years but I feel guilty just dumping it out. Any ideas?

Well I finally got DH to get the rest of the boxes out of the garage from Christmas packages. And I was able to sort through all the remaining photo frames and pull out the ones with actual pictures in them. Plus found a bin of photo albums so those will go on the shelf.

I also managed to guilt DH into finishing up YDD's room. This was a project he said he'd do weeks ago and has been barely putting any effort into. Her room looks great now! Hopefully it can stay that way until my mom visits! LOL

I just finished my never ending week of work and I slept most of the day (I work nights) so I'm ready to tackle my TO-DO list that I need to finish before Friday. Tomorrow morning will be the perfect time to tackle the kitchen so I should have that taken care of by the afternoon.

I do need to get groceries though so I might make a run for those tonight since there isn't even a piece of bread in the house right now!

Dump it out.

I would ask friends and coworkers if they were interested in the baking supplies and if not throw them away. They are useless to you and just getting older.

Since some are quite old I would fir check to see if they are still good.

Since these are cheap food products, of dubious age, I would just throw them out.

I think it makes you look weird if you say to someone, "oh I have some half-used bottles of sprinkles from 2004. Do you want them?"

Checking in on myself on my to do list

-go through all the drawers of my clothes and organize/purge - done

-have DH do the same - done

-there is a clothes basket that I filled last night of stuff that needs to be ebayed/donated/put somewhere else - done

-there is a box full of sentimental stuff I need to sort through

-i need to pull all of my shoes out of the closet and organize that part - done

-finish organizing the bathroom/bedroom (bought some hooks and things today to finish up. I got silverware drawer organizers for 2 of the drawers in the bathroom. one of them will be for toothbrushes. thank you pinterest) done

if the toddler allows, hoping to sort through that box of sentimental stuff this evening.

He slept all night last night again (did it Saturday night as well) so this hour and a half nap is paying off. BUT... today I went downstairs "just for a few minutes" and ended up down there for way longer than I anticipated and he slept almost 2 hours. ARGH! But... I worked in the basement. Basically just moved things around but still feels good to make a start down there!

My projects for the next week are: (this is a realistic list)
Finish hanging pictures
Find the Santa pics and figure out where to hang those plus frame/hang this year's pic ( I've got pics with the kids from every year since 2003)
Actually take the pile of books to donate over to the school ( they have been sitting there for about 3months!)
Organize/sort the Tupperware cabinet
Organize/sort the pantry

Ok, since yesterday afternoon and today is all I have had to work on this stuff, I have everything done except hanging the Santa pics. Not sure what I'm going to do about them since I don't have much wall space left but it will get done tomorrow.

I'm maxed out on wall space as well. Is the santa pics something you could put up just at Christmas time and take one of your "regular" wall hangings down during that time? That is what I do since I have been gifted so many nice Christmas wall decorations.

I just tossed 2 small boxes I was saving to send goodies to the grandbaby in but I always seem to buy a box or envelope so out they went.
More sewing stuff. Patterns, iron on's....

Prob gonna have to chuck the bedspread. Thought I would "fluff" it up so tossed it into the dryer but forgot to turn the "air" on rather than the heat... :furious: DH said he wants to see if before I go chucking it. I am sure he is going to come to the same conclusion as I....

Got a large shipping envelope packed and addressed to send to Grandbaby so all that stuff like paint books, stickers... are out of here as well.

What have you been able to do? popcorn::

Purple Heart comes tomorrow!!

20 bags of donations.

Feels so good. I didn't even bother to try to sell anything. Just want it gone from my house.

Also making good progress on my craft room...still days to go, but glad to see some floor space now.

Thank you for this thread!!

Not really, there are a lot of them and they are all 5x7, my other pictures are mostly 8x10 and cover an entire vaulted ceiling wall.

I think I've found where they will go but I need to actually measure the space before I start hanging them.

I lost my mojo and need someone to kick my butt.

We're only half way through the first month of the year! It's too early to lose mojo! You can do it! One bite at a time! Start small. One drawer or one cabinet. Set a timer for 10 minutes. You'll be amazed at how much you can get done in a short amount of time.

That's awesome, good job!

I'm thinking the same thing right now. I sorted through all the name brand clothes that I am getting rid of. I had thought about trying to sell them in large lots on craigslist at something like $1/each. Now I'm not sure if it's worth the effort.

I'm not sure what to do. Every time I go in the basement I see the car seat, bases, and stroller and know I need to do something... they are taking up so much room!

Before DS was born we bought an Eddie Bauer travel system, and 2 extra bases so DH and I would each have a base, and then we gave one to my parents. We spent $300 on all that stuff brand new. Anyway... the car seat and bases were fine, but we hated the heavy bulky stroller that despite it's claims, could not be folded one handed. We used it maybe 5 times when DS was really little and it was nice to just click the car seat in it. He never actually sat in the stroller part. We went to Disney World when he was 9 months old and before we went we bought a new stroller - the Britax B-Agile and we LOVED IT. We definitely want to sell the Eddie Bauer stroller because I know we will never use it again. I'm not sure what to do with the car seat... you aren't supposed to sell used car seats or buy them (but people do it all the time) so I could possibly sell the stroller, car seat + 3 bases together. We definitely want another baby, just not sure when (and DS took 3.5 years to conceive) The Eddie Bauer car seat was manufactured in 2012, so it would expire in 2017. I'd have no problem keeping the car seat and bases to use again but it isn't compatible with our stroller. If the next baby is 4-5 years+ younger than DS, the seat will be expired then I can't sell it at all.

We sold our car seats at a local kids consignment sale...had to have stickers on it showing age plus we had to sign a form saying it wasn't in an accident. We also sold other stuff, too, and it was nice to have the money! Good luck!

I've done yard sales, eBay and consignment sales for the "good stuff", but this time I just wanted it gone, plus there wasn't much that brings a good price. Anything that is really sale-worthy, I've set aside but really tried to keep it at a minimum. My main goal is less stuff and more room...
