2013 BOOK CHALLENGE! Are you in?

book 40 out of 75
If Looks Could Kill by by Kate White
Bailey Weggins is dragged into a murder investigation by her boss, magazine editor Cat Jones, whose nanny is murdered by poisoned chocolate truffles meant for Cat.

It was just ok - wouldn't recommend.

33/50: While it Lasts by Abbi Glines

I fully admit. I am an Abbi Glines addict. Her books make me want to be a twenty-something year old Southern girl because of all the hot boys in them.

Hmmm I don't know-- you will have to let me know! I have only read The Sea Breeze series and Fallen Too Far. They were all like crack. I started out thinking they weren't anything too impressive, and then I suddenly was like, OMG I NEED MORE!!

Goal = 75

49. Don't Blink by James Patterson & Howard Roughan
Murder, the Russian mob, a journalist and a former baseball player. How do these all relate. A typical Patterson, not a part of a series. It was ok.

50. Folly Beach by Dorothea Benton Frank
I like Frank's low country books. They are easy , light romantic quick reads. Likeable characters who are usually trying to overcome some crisis which ends up happily ever after.

Goal of 25 books.

Had a change from the last time, when I was supposed to be starting the 5th Mortal Instruments book. Couldn't get it at the library and so picked a different one.

Book 14: Delirium by Lauren Oliver.

It started out a bit slow, but interesting. The further I got into it, the more I enjoyed it and the ending had me yelling at the book. Very good though at times it sort of reminded me of Uglies by Scott Westerfield. Not that that's a bad thing, given that I enjoyed those novels, but there were just many similarities when I think back on it.

Book 15: Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver

The last one left with such a twist that I dove right into this one, feeling like I had to know what was going on. As typical to YA novels a love triangle began to form and I was groaning. Not because I don't enjoy love triangles, just because I really liked the initial pairing without a love triangle. It was well written and interesting, but again reminded me a lot of Pretties.

Next Up: Requiem by Lauren Oliver. I've already got it ready to go and can't wait to dive in.

22/30 - The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom

I didn't care for this. It's a book about time, Father Time, how time started to be measured, why we should consider time precious, etc. While I got the message, I didn't like the two main characters or the ending. I hadn't read anything by this author before, and I don't think I will bother with his others.

2/5 stars

Next up: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt

I'm also thinking I should up my goal, considering I'm only 8 books away at this point in time (and it's only May). :scratchin

I know we're in May already, but I'm new to the Dis and was wondering if it was OK to still join in ?

I read every day anyway, but I've slowed down on the actual amount I'm reading and would like to up it again as it was my favourite thing to do ever.

I'd like to read 60 books this year, I'm already someways into it, and I can list the ones I have already read if its OK to join ?

This is what I'm reading! Well, I just started. ;)
I keep looking through this thread wishing I had time to read (getting my MA in Literature=no time for fun reading).

Does it talk about her roller coasters that she built? My 9 year old dd keeps asking me to find out about this interesting tidbit. :rotfl:

I don't think it was brought up. I wish it did though!

Book #38 Alice I have been by Melanie Benjamin

Review: I found this book kind of odd and at times, difficult. The book is about Alice Liddell, the inspiration of Alice in Wonderland. This book takes some liberties with her life but it was entertaining at time. The first quarter of the book is pretty slow but the story speeds up a bit. However, what I found difficult was the relationship (or supposed) between Alice Liddell and Charles Dodgon. Yet, the author shows the relationship with some grace but there is something slightly disturbing about it yet I feel that it was Benjamin's intent.

i read two books today!!! That is unusual for me...

Book 41 The Vincent Boys - cute YA romance -high school love triangle - girl must chose the good boy or the bad boy - it was light, fun read with adorable boys (I feel a bit like a dirty old lady :thumbsup2)

Book 42 The Boy in the Striped Pajamas - it has been summarized by others in this thread. I gave it 4 stars on goodreads

Goal 72

#35 Hourglass by Myra McEntire

YA book involving time travel & people with 'special powers'. I really liked this one. It is the first in a series.

I don't think it was brought up. I wish it did though!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Oh well, that's ok.
I was waylaid by "No Greater Journey: Americans in Paris" which is really interesting.

And I just got my summer reading list for one of my Master's classes. :sad2:

Goal - 100 Books

Book #33 - "The Enchanted April" by Elizabeth Von Arnim

4 women of different stages in life are all brought together by an advertisement offering a month in the "sunshine and wisteria" of a castle in Italy. As they vacation, they shed their dreary English lives, and become what they were always meant to be.

I loved this book! I watched the movie years ago, and found it charming, but the book is so much more! The transformation of the characters (especially Lotty) is wonderful! It makes me wonder what a month in Italy would do for me!

Next up: "Slaughterhouse Five" by Kurt Vonnegut

Of course you can join! It's never too late for any DIS'ers!!

I'll add you to our list in the first post. Keep us updated as to what you've read and how you're doing towards your goal!

Go ahead and up it! ;) I upped mine from 30 to 50, but wow, I think that might have been TOO much of a push. I'm a little behind schedule now, but I also don't like goals being too easy either. :)

Finished #17 out of 50

The Light Between Oceans

I can understand why this book brought about so much controversy and so much love/hate. It's the whole reason why I decided to read it myself to see where I fell. There were times that I hated it... it took a dark turn for a while. But all in all, I loved it, and the storyline will most likely stay with me for a long time. I LOVE books that make you think... that cause you to ponder your own actions and motives in life... what would YOU do in this situation? I like real books - ones that don't always give you that perfect "white picket fence" type of ending.

In a nutshell, it's about a young barren couple living out on an isolated island to care for the lighthouse. A boat washes up to shore with a dead man and an infant who is still alive. Do they do the right thing and report the missing baby or keep the little one to raise as their own... and someday they must face civilization again and face the dire consequences that their decision has caused and also face their own marriage & each other as this was not a decision that was agreed to by both.

I'd rate this book 4.5 out of 5 :thumbsup2

Now... in saying that, it's time for a light, escape type novel. No more thinking for me for a week or two, lol.

Currently reading I Heart New York by Lindsay Kelk. I added this to my list because it's supposedly written similar to Sophie Kinsella's books, and I absolutely ADORE Becky Bloomwood. :) I am liking it enough to grab the book anytime I have a free moment, but I don't think it's on the same par as the Shopaholic books, or maybe it's because I don't connect as well with Angela as I do Becky. But it's definitely a light, easy read with some laughable moments. :bitelip:

Okay, I'll up mine to 50 also. I may regret that later because I'm awfully busy during the warm months with outdoor chores, but I'm going to go for it. Hopefully I can get close. :goodvibes

I'll have to add this to my list. I love Sophie Kinsella books so if it's similar to that I'll enjoy it.

Goal - 25 (Haven't decided upon upping it or not. With the summer months coming, I'll be working so much...)

Finished 16 - Requiem by Lauren Oliver. Did not like it as much as I thought I would. It kind of had a Huger Games effect on me where the first two I liked a whole lot and then the third was a bit of a let down. This is contributed to by the fact that the ending is just so broad and leaves soooo many (too many) questions unanswered.

Up next: ? Might be 5th TMI book or Delirium Short Stories. I also plan to start The Maze Runner sometime soon.
