2012 Destashing Thread

It's been a while but had a forced decluttering. We had the shippers take our things and I had my box of clothes left behind. Unfortunately it was 4 boxes of clothes plus a suitcase. I did not want to pay the excess baggage fees so I went through it and whatever I knew didn't fit that I had been saving for some day was left out. Whatever was really worn down or I knew I would not wear again was left out. I only kept things that fit now. I took the basics, the stuff I wore all the time, and the really nice things that I knew I would wear plus my most favorite shoes plus a couple of comfortable ones and that was it. I went from the 4 boxes to 1 suitcase and a half. It feels really nice to have my wardrobe back to basics. It also gives me a reason to shop a little more when we are settled in our new home.

What are you doing with your old electronics? I have a few of these things also and hate to toss them but also know they are almost obsolete.

Great job on the decluttering!

My local Animal Shelter took them for their shop. They all worked so hopefully they can make a few dollars on them.

We got rid of a few more things:

1 old Camcorder w charger
2 old digital cameras w/ chargers
1 small plastic box (12x6x4) of misc computer parts (video cards, memory cards, other pop and install pieces)
2 T-Shirts
2 books
1 broken plastic storage box
4 small unused picture frames
1 snow tube (we have not used it, in at least 3 years)

Comic guy you doing a great job, your even motivating me to go more of my things-lol!

Tonight I got rid of a bunch of junk mail, old bills and few small junk items. Total 1 huge black garbage bag of trash plus a bunch of shredded old bills. I also got rid of a grocery bag of junk.

I have a huge cabinet for my craft supplies. I went through it and organized it. I plan on going through my craft closet and trying to get that stuff into my cabinet. Next to my desk dh put in some racks to hold board for shelves. I kept adding to it and it collapsed. Dh said to much crap on there. I went through it and did a pile for file, shred and trash. Hopefully tomorrow he will fix the boards.

I also have about 35 listing on Craigs List. I still have more items to post.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get more stuff done.

And thank you for answering my question above about the electronics. :)

Reading thru this thread with some admiration for you all. Last year I was forced to declutter all my husbands stuff as well as much of my own as were my kids as my husband died suddenly from a stroke. Wrapped in this saddness was the news we would now be able to buy a house due to life insurance. But oh my the things we had to declutter. He had so much stuff that it made no sense to move, so while many widows can take their time to sort thru, I had to decide rather quickly. Some things I kept as the kids just would not hear of getting rid of as it was dads and they were not willing to part with it yet, as you can imagine so much clothes and other things just had to go.

Why I post this is all the good those items are doing between the charities and garage sales. Those items are now being bought by some that otherwise might not afford those items. I just want to tell you I am proud of all you are doing.

2011 was hard in so many ways for myself and my kids, and going thru all the things my husband had did not make it any easier as he was such a collector of things.

Now a little over a year later, there are more things to declutter as I finally just boxed up some stuff of his and it now sits in the garage waiting to go to charity, perhaps this thread has given me the push I need to start again. I will be calling the VVA for a pick up soon.

Well I got a lot of stuff doneLast night I got rid of 1 large black trash bag of treash and 2-3- years of bills that I shredded.

This morning I got rid of another 1/2 large black trash bag. I shredded another 2-3 years of bills. I just have darn things to shred, its like its going out of the walls-lol! I also tossed 2 large acordian file type cases. My spareroom also got vaccumed and it starting to look better excpet for the HUGE craigs list pile. I might try and go do a lil bit more

Dis mom 55- Sorry for you loss. Sounds like you doing a good job decluttering. Decluttering isnt easy especially when the items belong to a passed loved one. Just go at your own pace.

While installing 6 slide out wire drawer units in our kitchen base cabinets, I had to completely empty them. Due to the horrible organization in them before, there was stuff way in the dark back that had been there close to the 19 years we have lived here.

Lots of kitchen items in the donation box. And now all remaining items are on slide out shelves & I can reach everything that is in my cabinets. I LOVE THEM! I keep opening the doors & sliding out the shelves.

:rotfl2: :cool1: :thumbsup2

Can't remember if I posted this but a few weeks ago I tackled the pants in my closet. It had been a VERY long time. Like 3 sizes worth long time. Also not working outside the home anymore for many years, so all those dress pants that didn't fit anymore didn't need to stick around. 25 pairs of pants consisting of 3 different sizes all gone. Leaving me with only the pairs that fit! :D

Bunch of crappy hangers went in the trash too.

I wish I had some of those pull out shelves.I only have one for my pans. It does make it so much easier since it hurts to get down on my knee and have to stick my arm all the way in. I have to cabinets that are shaped in an L shape and things get pushed to the back and hard to reach.

I havent even made it to my closet. I have one section in my closet that has pants stacked in a pile wait high(i'm 5'6) there has to be 15 -20 pairs of pants. I have clothes that dont fit, dressy clothes or clothes I havent seen in years. Our clothes hanger bar goes from front to back so i have no idea whats in the back.

Once i finish up my spareroom then i'll head to the bedroom or garage

Dismom55 - I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm glad you've found a way to bless others with your late DH's things.

I need to get back to due cluttering. I did my kitchen two months ago and it still is nice to find everything in it's place. I'm working on my kids bedroom with clothes that don't fit nd how to organize those that do.

Reading your posts really helps to motivate me to start.

I wrote this for another thread last month. If you check out their website, Rev-A-Shelf, they have other styles that work in the L-shaped cabinets too.

Thanks for the link. Watched a couple videos. I'll have to show dh. I definietly want a pullout for our trash can.

Well I sold a fil cabinet on craigs list so that's one medium size item out of the house. I've had this list since March. People inquired about it but it was to small or they wanted it dirt cheap. My price was already low $15. Well the girl that bought it was going to buy a brand new one but a friend told her to look on Cl. She saw it loved it and bought it-lol! She said it was her first item bought from CL-lol! She was very excited:goodvibes I almost sold a booster seat but they needed it ASAP and i couldnt because I was at dd's ortho appt.

Tonight i plan on shredding some more bills and organizing some more clothes so i can post on craigs list. The extra lil money I'm making on there helps out since I'm off in the summer and have no income.

I have a rocking chair thats taking up space but i'm not ready to part with it. I've been saving it incase I ever get pregnant again but my clock is ticking and not to much time left since I will be 40 this month. I've had infertility issues so no luck.I have all my CL stuff piled on it. I was thinking of wrapping it up and having dh put it into our shed if theres room.
I found a very nice close rack at Ross for $20. It has a bottom shelf so i can but boxes on it , the rack for clothes and a top shelf rack so i can put stuff on it. I figure i can hang all the clothes to get rid of . It will make it easier to organize by size so when i take pics to sell. Then when i nolonger need it for that . Dd can use it to hang up her clothes that cant be put in dryer.

if all goes as planned I will have another large black trash bag of shredd stuff and junk out of the house. I'm hoping this weekend I can go through my bedroom closet, if not i will start with coat closet, which i plan on turning into my vacum, floor steamer and carpet cleaner storage closet.

Update: Well I didnt get to shred like I hoped. Dh fell asleep and I have no idea where he put those Huge blk trash bags. I did put together the close rack . I hung up the loose clothes i had in my cl box, And i fold some clothes and put in groups. I found more stuff to shred. I dont think the shredding will ever end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I reduced some prices on my CL items, Something I just want to get rid of quick.

Things to do today
1. Take pictures of more items to post on CL

2. Clean out small hall closet for my bakeware and big applicance electric gadgets( i'm going to wait for dh to go over a shelving plan with me) I dont feel like taking everything out and leaving it out until i get shelving

3. Shred my pile of papers- Completed

Did a bit more cleaning:

Got rid of two more pairs of sneakers

Sold another 40 comic books!!!:cool1:

Shreaded a larget basket full of old bills

Recycled 3 more magazines

Threw away two ratty T-Shirts

Donated two picture frames and two more books

Cleaned out the fridge of expired food:cool1: It is amazing how much gets shoved to the back!!!

I made 2 trips to the dump today after going through our workshop when DH wasn't around. :hyper: Unbelievable things saved in there and I finally snapped! 2 sets of encyclopedias from early 1960 and mid 1970 along with broken equipment not worth repairing (popcorn air popper? Really?) were in there along with packing boxes, etc. I have now got more room to move around and straighten and sort. It is a great workshop with 2 rooms, walkin closet with heat and a/c and a landline phone and a covered large porch for mower and other equipment so I want the neat obsessive shop I inherited from my father back. :thumbsup2

Today we bagged up 6-8 bags of toys and stuff to take to Goodwill. My mother buys my kid too many toys and there are so many that she never plays with. They are going!

You got rid of a lot of stuff. Workshop sounds awesome. You had me at walk in closet-lol!

Dh and I just got back from a nice lunch. I was telling him about the hall cabinet i want shelves put in for bakeware stuff. After the chili cheese burger, chili fries and large drink , he's now resting on the recliner. I doubt I'll be able to get him up to work-lol!

I'm going to TRY and clean my side of the closet or go through the hall coat closet. I'm hoping to make that my vaccum, florr steamer and carpet cleaner closet instead of a jacket closet full of jackets we nolonger wear or fit into.

Ohhh, I need this thread!!

We are having a bathroom renovated starting today. I pulled 5 bags of garbage out of this tiny 5' x8' bathroom! It felt so good to fling all that crap. Out of date meds, old razors and soap, candle holders etc.

I gave 3 bags of kids clothes to a friend, and I have 4 bags of clothes to go to Goodwill.

I really want to get organized and decluttered... really can't stand living in a mess anymore.

Everyone is doing so well with the decluttering!

I have been sorting through my craft space weeding out things I don't like or won't use. There's at least one carton of things I can send down to the library my mother works in - they are starting craft classes for kids in the fall and are thrilled to get all this stuff!!

I also got rid of a shirt. I have had it for 4 years, wore it for the first time this year and I hate it. I wore it and washed it 3 times, hating it every single time. On Saturday, when I pulled it out of the washing machine, I just tossed it. Not so impressive in the decluttering sense, but I felt relief to throw it out.
