2012 Destashing Thread

This has been a good weekend to get some things done! We got our suitcases vacuumed (because the cats lay on them) and put away so when we need them next they will be all ready to go. Seems like that is always something we leave at the last minute. Have a couple tubs worth of stuff to dust/clean and price for my friends next garage sale.

However I did manage to unload a tub with our old Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis (plus controllers and games) to a dvd/game resale shop for $85. That was a pleasant surprise! I wasn't sure if they even still worked but they checked it all out and now I have an empty tub!

Always lots more to do, but at least we filled the garbage cans a couple times and made some decision on some things that had been lying around for years. Hopefully I can keep the momentum going this afternoon and tomorrow!:woohoo::dance3:

How is everyone doing with destashing? I have several things listed on craigs list and its been really slow. All of a sudden I'm getting people interested in some items. Today I sold 2 Lots of kids clothes and made $25 So I got rid of 29 pieces of kids clothes:cool1:
Someone else was interested in another clothes lot but it had more of one size that they didnt need. Around 9pm someone else emailed about the same lot but I got home late. They emailed their name and number to set up a pick up time. I'm going to call tomorrow and hopefully it sells and that would be $40 and 41 pieces of clothes out of my house.
I'm now offically off in the summer so I plan on going through more stuff and posting it on craig list. I'm also going to toss some items and donate items.

This summer dh and I are going to paint our bedroom and add a built in closet organizer so he will be forced to go through all his items. Any clothes that dont fit or we havent worn will be post on CL, tossed(if not in good condition) or donated. I have 2 months to declutter everything!!!!!!

update: I just sold another Lots of clothes. Yesterday and today I sold 5 Lots of girls clothes. I've had these posted since March. I dont know if its because its memorial weekend or the weather is getting hotter but people seem to be buying. I'm not trying to brag but just wanted to share incase anyone has been discouraged with Facebook. Made $100 and got rid of 112 pieces of kids clothes

:cool1:the 2nd Lot of clothes sold. I think there might have been more than 44 pieces but it was a huge bag of clothes and nice stuff. The lady was very happy. She knows she got a good deal. I got another email for one of my other Lot combos, I'm hoping she gets back to me , if so , thats another 44 pieces of clothes gone!!!!!

I still have more things to go through, organize and take photos of but I think I'm getting sick. My throat glands are swollan and not sure if its allergies or what, my tonsils dont feel sore just glands are swollan.
Nextweek dd wiil be in school and dh at work so I will be able to declutter some more.

Anyone else getting stuff done????????????????????? Let encourage each other-lol!

another update: Tomorrow I will throw away a grocery bag full of old socks, bras and underwear, another grocery bag of old clothes and a large bag of trash. Hopefully tomorrow I will get a lot more done but I'm off to a good start :)

I want to join in!! I went through my need a last minute birthday gift in a hurry chest and put together a basket of crayola stuff to donate to our church auction! I spent hardly anything for the stuff and ended up with a great basket for a good cause. I also cleared out a little room. My baby is getting bigger and the birthday gifts are getting more grown up. Sad,sad, story.

How on earth do my kids end up with so much stuff??? I am working in the kids bedrooms and ours today. We got DD a daybed that she has been wanting and are going to be putting her bunkbeds in DS's room. He's already been using the bottom bed in there (it is on wheels and separate from the upper bunk), so I don't get to get rid of a bed, but at least it will all be together in one room. I am cleaning out DD's stuff in order to make her room more enjoyable for her. She just has so much she doesn't play with. DS's isn't nearly as bad, but I am going to go through his books and get rid of the "baby" books :( My kiddos are getting too big, too fast!

I am finally getting my antique roll-top desk back from the refinishers, so I am moving my computer armoire to DD's room for her to have my old desktop computer. That will give her a little extra storage for her books too, which should help.

Busy day! Let's hope I get it all done. My goal is to have at least one big bag of stuff to get rid of too!

Its amazing how much stuff our kids have and we dont realize it until WE have to clean it-lol! Most of the stuff I'm getting rid of is my dd's items. She is now 13 but i had all her stuff stored in containers. I just got rid of clothes size 4T, 5T,6T, 7T, 10-12 and the latest size she grew out of which is 14, ok thats how many years of stuff-hahahaha!

I only have one child and would love to have another one but have fertility issues. Part of me cleaning out the clutter is just incase cuz i'm trying to get preggo. If I'm lucky the next kid wont be as spoiled.

I was just going through my stuff in the spare room but had to take a break and see who else is decluttering.

Well I filled up another box of knick knacks so i have to boxes of misc. I'm thinking of posting it on CL as a Lot and cheap. I also found some kitchen stuff like 2 sets of sliverware, matching containers, and brand new dishes i never used but took out of the box, the sliver and containers are still in boxes but that all has to go. I also got 3 grocery bags of misc toys

Now, charity donations are great, because you get a tax write-off and the charity gets some money (hopefully), but if all you want is to make the stuff go away, freecycle is a no-effort solution a lot of the time.

Do you, or does anyone know exactly how much in donations can be written off taxes? It used to be $500, but recently someone posted on another thread that they'd written off over $1k.

:confused3

i'm here to re-enroll in the destashing thread.

i flunked out back in february after a great start during january in destashing my place. :laughing:

i don't know how you all can keep up the pace in all your rooms!

i did 6 weeks of destashing and thought i needed a short break.
3.5 months later i'm back to try again.

Same here. I was on a roll in March then took a break and wait for my listing on CL to sell, i think it was an excuse to take a break-hahaha. I have to be in the mood to declutter otherwise just going into the junk room is just overwhelming. The junk in the garage is in my face everyday when i pullout to go to work or pull in when i get home. I got a lot done in my room but came to a halt when i couldnt find the camera. Tomorrow will be spent taking photos for CL . The rest of the week will determine if I move on to the garage nextweek

It always seems to go in spurts for me. I'm feeling like I'm about to get started on a roll so hopefully that will hold true. I've taken about a half hour the last couple days to just do a little bit here and there. It's amazing how quickly just doing a little here and there can add up. Right now I have a pile of trash that needs to go out the door so I'll enlist DH's help getting that down and out.

I know it didn't happen overnight but it would sure be nice if it it were to disappear overnight! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I will have to destash some of my Boyd's Bear collection - it is fairly substantial and I'm not sure how to unload it. This may sound bad but the going rates on Ebay seem pretty low pricewise and it seems overloaded with them. Of course it may just be time for me to have a reality check and once I get through deciding what I'm keeping and what is going I'll just have to do the best I can with whatever means is available. I don't want to think of them as garage sale material, but maybe with advertisement that will be the easiest way to go? Has anyone else had to pare down a collection? How did you find new home for your previous prized possessions?:confused:

Try selling your collection on Craigs List. I make more money on CL then I would having a yardsale. Plus i sell in bulk/Lot and its better then sitting in the hot sun for a yardsale. On CL you can place it under collectibles

I might unload 3 pairs of dd's shoes tomorrow morning. This lady just bought some clothes from me on Monday. When i told her she laughed and asked if i had anymore stuff that she might be interested in.

What I'm having trouble unloading are knick knacks, new cheap frames, tile stands. I've tried in bild and yesterday I made smaller group lots, bears, angels , picture frames.
I only meet in public places so thats why i'm doing the smaller lots. I dont want to meet for just $1

Update: Well today Thursday I didnt get anything done. Tomorrow will be a busy day so I'm hoping this weekened I can get some more decluttering done.

To those Of you that do CL and have several items, whats the best way to show all your items? Can i create a photobucket account and upload all my photos and then add the link to my CL post? If not whats the best way to show everything without having to do so many postings? Thanks

How's everyone doing withm destashing???? I didnt get as much done. I did upload a dish set to craigs list. If it goesits a big bulk of brand new dishes, flatware, canister and bowls.

I'm just having trouble with my spareroom. I think i need to clear my craft table so i can use it to group stuff together. I need to take pictures of it all and list it. Its just so Hot!!!

anyone else getting stuff done?

We had a yard sale yesterday, my mom & I got rid of a lot of stuff but we still have a lot left. A friend of a friend (hah) is having a yard sale at her house in 2 weeks so we decided we'd go through the boxes of what is left from yesterday, take some stuff to Goodwill, price down the stuff that's we think will sell (we have a lot of Christmas and holiday decorations) pull out the stuff we can probably gift, and then hopefully what is left after this yard sale won't be much and we can donate to my Aunt's church who is having a yard sale in a few weeks. I am so excited to get rid of stuff! I didn't have any luck getting rid of some big items - 2 TV stands, an electric fireplace, and a hot/cold water dispenser so I think I'll try my luck on Craigslist and not drag them to the next yard sale.

Yes try Craigs list for the bigger items. You could also put the clothes in LOTS and sell on craigs list to. \Example: say you have kids girls clothes
size 4T you group it all together. say you have 5 pairs of pants /shorts and 10 tops you then sell it as a LOT at a set price. I've been selling my Lots at $1 a piece so I'd sell it for $20 and if the buyer says $15 i'd say ok if you come today or you could sell it at at what ever price. At yardsales I sell kids pants @ $1 and shorts and top for .50 so I make more on craigs list.

As far as me I'd love to load up all my stuff and donate it but I dont work during the summer so I rather try and sell on CL and make a lil money for bills. It does take a lil time and work to go through everything and take photos but it can be worth it. Just this year we've made about $300-$400 on CL:cool1: I've been keeping a list just to see how much our we make on our old stuff

I've been doing okay with my destashing but am grinding to a halt for at least a week, starting tomorrow. The painter is coming to start on the inside of the house and I cannot stand the smell of paint, so the kids and I are going to my parents! Maybe I'll get some of the research started for my doctoral project study instead.....

While rearranging DD's room this week, I did get rid of two rocking horses, a doll bench, bitty baby bouncer, and an entire laundry hamper of misc. items. So there was progress made!

Sounds like you did good today. I ended up working on the garage clutter today. I dunno why I decided to go out there around 6pm. Since i was already in my pj's i couldnt open up the garage. BOY WAS IT HOT!!!!!!

So here's what put in the declutter pile and i took pics and upload to CL...

7=Men Xlarge Shirts
8= Mens Large Shirts
11=3T girls clothes
6= 4T girls clothes
5= 6 & 7/8 girls clothes
7= large Home interior Pictures
2= shirts threw away in the trash
------------------
46 items total to be gone:cool1:

Funny thing is,,,,,,I was thinking boy people on here are gonna think my home looks like a hoaders home but it doesnt-lol! My junk is in the spare room and in containers or large trash bags in the garge.

BTW when i'm finished grouping items into bags, taking photos and pricing, DH comes in and says he has more stuff he could add to my stuff:rolleyes1 I told him its to hot and i'm done for the evening. We still need to tackle his closet:scared1: He has more clothes and junk then i do:scared1:

I worked in my spare room tonight.

I had an easter basket full of stuff that needed to be shedded. I also cleared a pile i had next to my desk. Let just say I had to empty the shredder basket 3 times-lol! I also got rid of junk papers and trash so a Huge black trash bag will leave my house:cool1:

I have mnot had any hits on craigs list so I'm trying to convince dh to help me with a yardsale. I have one month to get rid of this clutter!!!!!

I still have lot of work to do in my spare room. I cant organize it with all the pile of craig list stuff in there.

At the rate I'm going my goal now is to just clear, clean and organize my spare room.

Next goal will be the garage or my bedroom, but not until Thanksgiving week.

How is everyone doing??????

I have been working on this for two years now and I am just amazed how the more I get rid of the more I need to get rid of stuff! :rotfl:

Exactly!!

I've found if I give an area another sort through that I can let go of more things too. Like I saw it once and deemed it important but when I haven't' even thought about for 6mth-1yr and go through it again I realize it's not important and can get rid of it.

I am finally getting back to this task. There are so many things laying around the house for so long they have actually become part of the "decor". This weekend I am committed to putting everything away. The visual clutter is paralyzing me at this point so I am going to do a quick sweep now - some things will get tossed right away - then come back and go through each drawer, cabinet, closet and do some serious purging.

sounds like everyone is doing a great job. I will do some more work in my spare room. I seem to get more done when dh isnt here-lol! Funny thing is my home is super clean except my bedroom(not to bad) but my spareroom is horrible. I think because there to much going on in there....its my iron room, office, junk room and craftroom.
