2012 Beach and Yacht FAQ ~ March, April and May ~Do Not Post Here-Old Thread

For counter service in DHS, we always love Starring Rolls Bakery--the sandwiches are huge and very good and the cupcakes are to die for. But what I will say is DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT go to the ABC Commissary. Eww

You are soooo right!! Had that in 2010, yuck!! And I'm not a picky eater.

Never think of Starring Rolls for lunch.....usually have a quick snack or a quick breakfast there.

thanks for the tip, I will have to check it out in May!!!

Teena or anyone else We don't land until 7:10 p.m. and I was curious about our luggage?

With a late flight, what time is the latest they will deliver our luggage to BC?

I don't think we would use the boat to Epcot, but is the boat to DHS air conditioned??? (from the pics it looks like it's possible...), but I was just wondering, because I'm thinking in July heat, it is not pleasant to walk to DHS, and was just wondering if there is an air conditioned option. Thanks! :goodvibes

Nope, no A/C but there are fans. If you can sit towards the front, that will help. Or sit out back, if you can stand the engine fumes. It is better than walking in the full sun, but it is still warm in there. We sometimes pop on our misty fans to help (sans mist, of course ;))

I can't speak for the BC, but at the CR a couple of years ago, our luggage didn't show up until close to 10pm with a 6pm arrival (but that was because our luggage went to the wrong resort first!)

I'm so behind on our thread, so I'll say a general "welcome" to all the new posters!

Happy Travels, Feckless! Can't wait to hear from you!

Teena - super cute Lily photo!

Anyone checking in this week: Our friends who were upgraded from BWI deluxe CL to the 2-bedroom suite at BC are still there now. So say hello if you see a blond family of six in the club lounge!

YC FAN, no trip report from last August. I'm just not very good at those, so I stick to mini-reports and missions for the thread! And my photos of the "goods" were not so great - the boys rushed in too quickly

For us it is worth it. Now that is DS is passed the character breakfast stage, we enjoy a quick bite for breakfast in the lounge. We are huge believers in having a sit down lunch to take you away from the parks, crowds, heat etc, so the continental style breakfast is great in that we are ready for our escape meal by 12:30 pm or so. We also like to eat dinner later, so the appy's at 5pm are a nice hold us over until a 7:30 or 8 pm dinner. We do sample them most nights, since we are typically at the hotel swimming from 3-5pm anyway. Of course, easy access to beer doesn't hurt either ;)

cinderumbrella, this is us! (Although our youngest does enjoy a character breakfast now and then.) Otherwise, this is exactly what we like to do. We eat later at home and the boys have warm snacks after school in the afternoons, so CL replicates our normal schedule very well!

To those of you asking about club level - once you do it, you won't ever go back to a regular room. THAT is the downside of club level. In fact DH told me if he can't stay club level he would rather stay at a moderate. I was sort of hoping to help the the budget this summer and stay Garden View YC but nope - no one here was having it. THAT is the down side. I have gotten great deals on YC CL in 2009. 2010 and 2011. This summer BC CL rate was just ok. I think that is disney's master plan!

scottmel, I can confirm that it was an adjustment staying at POFQ and non-CL at YC last month after a few CL stays at BC and BWI. It was just two of us last month, so we didn't book CL, and our 5-year-old was asking about the snack room right away when we checked in. (So funny - just what Pas' kids call it!) I told him no snack room this time, but next time! And I always tease my husband about overbuying snacks for the room when we're not staying CL - but I was guilty of the same thing! Left lots of unopened snacks, juice boxes, etc. in our room at the end of our stay. Need to remember to add the value of the "unopened snacks for room" when I calculate the benefits of CL in the future. :)

But we had a wonderful YC stay, and I definitely do not recommend a moderate over a non-DL deluxe stay!

:scared1:So much for early to bed!!!! thanks for the info.

Can anyone tell me the movie on the beach titles for May? DD is so excited to do this so I'm just trying to plan which evening is best :) thanks!!

I have two teenage girls - ages 13 and 16 (and we are all still alive this week) - any suggestions for restaurants?

My DD (also a teen) loves Sci-Fi Diner at DHS, Boma at AKL, and 'Ohana at the Poly.

:thumbsup2 Very well said -- I think we were spoiled by our early CL trips. When we booked non-CL rooms, we kept missing it, so we're back. :confused3

Oh how I wish those boats had A/C on the way back from DHS in the summer! I know you're right, because it was super-HOT in there last time...:headache:

We went July of 2010, used to boat to DHS several times. I don't remember the AC situation, but it wasn't hot, so I'm guessing it's either ac or fans??

It's a GREAT ride back to BC/YC after a long day in the parks.

Hi Everyone! Been lurking for a long time and all my questions have been answered by all of you except this one. Its our first time at BC and our first time at CL. Do we tip the concierge people on the club level or only if they help us out with something??? Thanks again for all the great info!:worship:

Hello everyone! I am thinking of changing my stay to YC from Poly because of the new late summer discount that just came out.We were going to try it last year but wound up switching back to Poly. This year the discount for Poly is just not that great for us as we are trying to sell our house and move in the near future so the extra discount at YC is helpful. My big problem with YC is the lack of quick service because with 2 kids we usually need to grab some quick meals at the hotel to tide them over.I figure we will have to work around it but my other issue is I usually take the kids alone to the parks while dh does some work or just chills at the hotel and I can't manage the busses and the stroller with the kids alone so I like the monorail. Can you take a stroller open on the boat to epcot and dhs or do you need to close it up?TIA:goodvibes

Hello busymommy2pink! Many of us get our WDW resort movie schedules from *********************.com. I just checked and they don't have the schedule posted for May yet. Sometimes it takes a couple days for them to post, so it should be available any time now. Dee usually keeps an eye on it and then posts it on the front page of this thread.

I see the website didn't post - I think there are special posting rules for links - can someone help?

Any pics from the YC standard room balcony? Trying to see how "unpleasant" the view could be.

Thanks!

Hello POOHDRMR! Welcome! We love both Poly and YC, but BC/YC is our very favorite. In response to your questions/concerns:

1) Quick Service at BC/YC. We are very happy with the quick service options at BC/YC. We generally have a couple ADRs per day and prefer TS, but when we do need CS, we love both BC Marketplace and Hurricane Hanna's. I stayed at YC with our youngest son last month and he fell asleep during our dinner ADR, so I needed to grab a second dinner for him after Illuminations. BC Marketplace was the perfect stop on the way back to YC from Epcot. The entire kids' meal - flatbread pizza, grapes, milk and a cookie - was around $5 and they packaged it all up in a convenient paper bag with handles. It was so easy to transport back to YC.

And if you need more of a selection, Picabu at the Dolphin is next door to YC and open 24 hours.

Now, I do love Captain Cook's and it's probably my favorite resort CS, but BC Marketplace is not far behind. And part of what I love about BC/YC is all of the dining options - both TS and CS - all around the Epcot resort area and in World Showcase.

2) Strollers on the Friendship Boats. In our experience, we have never had to collapse the stroller on the Friendship Boats to DHS and Epcot. And this is over several years during several different seasons. By contrast, the MK area boats have required us to collapse the stroller about half the time.

Hope that helps!

Are you talking about http://www.*********************.com/activity-outdoormovie.php#beachclub? Agreed, they do not have May posted yet.

To insert the URL when replying, there is a small icon of a globe with what looks like a paper clip over it just under the smiley face above the response window. That will pop open a window for you to paste/type the link into.

MINE DIDN'T POST EITHER... it's build-a-better-mousetrip dot com but take out the -'s

Hi skepace! I only have a photo of the GV at YC, and it's wonderful. :) Sorry if you posted about this before and I missed it, but have you considered upgrading to a GV for only a little more? We love that category - nice balance between the cost of a water view and the potential for a parking lot/roof view when booking standard.

I am. so. excited. :hyper:

I've been on a long hiatus from The Dis. As I did my religious checking for September discounts this afternoon, lo and behold: My Dream of a Fatter Wallet Has Come True! (Now, if only the skinnier butt dream thing would get answered...)

Last year, we did a split stay with BC-CL and Poly. We were so disappointed during the Poly bit -- with the noise and crowds -- we spent the entire time wishing we were back at the BC.

Annoying Question Time!

I am curious and wondering if anyone could shed some light on the age-old dilemma of YC vs. BC. In particular, YC-CL vs. BC-CL -- it would be garden view, if that makes a difference. The Cast: Husband, 5 year old kidlet and myself. My only request would be for a daybed, although I realize that's a crap-shoot.

We loved the BC-CL last year. I was curious if anyone had any opinions on how much more quiet the YC is compared to the BC. We do appreciate a bit more calm. (BC was positively a library of tranquility compared to the Poly part of our stay.) I'm just a bit torn as to whether to go for something new and try the YC if it'll offer a bit more "quiet" than the BC. Or, just stick with what we loved last year. All in all, we're just stoked to get another dip in SAB! Any and all help or injections of sanity most welcome.

Thanks in advance, all you YC/BC Einsteins... :goodvibes

From our experience, when we went last June we only took the boat 1 time from DHS to the resort and were forced to fold up the stroller and hold onto our child. Could be because it was busy (due to SWW) that they did that, but we chose to not take the boat again for that reason.

Hi Missoutandabout! I posted this last month, and hope it might be helpful in response to your question regarding YC and BC. I'll add that I'm all for trying something new. The great thing about BC vets trying YC for the first time is that it's very low risk. You still have all the things you love about BC right there because they are shared. I really felt at home at YC and think of YC/BC as one big resort now.

After a wonderful YC stay last week, I'll summarize our thoughts regarding the differences we saw between BC and YC (with a few BWI comments mixed in!)

1) Lobby. I think this is all about personal preference. The YC lobby is lovely, and while it's definitely darker and more formal than the BC lobby, it's not the least bit stuffy. As I've seen in the past, there are quite a few conference attendees, while BC seems to attract more families. The BC lobby tends to be busy in the morning with Cape May, and the YC lobby tends to be busy at happy hour. So while many say the YC lobby is more quiet, I actually felt like it was a wash in terms of lobby activity. At times, I could really tell YC was a conference hotel because we encountered so many conference attendees in the lobby, elevators and store, but it had less of a conference feel than either CSR or Dolphin (we've stayed at those, too - Dolphin felt the most conferency.)

Of course, we missed Teena in the lobby! (But that's because it wasn't one of her regularly scheduled work days and she's enjoying her cruise!) But we were fortunate to meet Teena and Bob's friend, Gary, who is the part-time greeter in the YC lobby. We talked with him a few times during our stay - what a nice guy and a pleasure to meet! We'll be sure to stop by the YC lobby to say hello to him in the future, even when we're staying at BC.

In the end, I prefer the BC lobby - just more my style. And I'm highly sentimental, so that's a big factor for me. Of the Epcot area resorts, I'd rank the lobbies as follows: 1) BC; 2) YC; 3) BWI.

2) Stores. Fittings and Fairings at YC opened at 9am, which was surprising to me as a Disney early bird! I'm used to the 6:30am BC Marketplace opening for coffee, and then the remaining area opening at 7am. F&F has a nice selection of merchandise (far more than at BC Marketplace, it seemed) and a small selection of grocery items (fewer than at BC Marketplace.)

In the end, F&F at YC wins for merchandise and BC Marketplace wins for everything else (including operating hours!)

For those interested in a BWI comparison, I'd rank BWI similarly to YC - it wins for merchandise, but BC Marketplace wins for everything else.

3) Food. For the first time, I was a little concerned about CS. We usually don't use CS much, but I was traveling alone with our 5-year-old and I knew he would fall asleep during at least one dinner ADR. He did, and I needed dinner #2 for him after Illuminations. BC Marketplace was perfect and the kids' meals there are a very good value (a relatively large flatbread pizza, grapes, cookie and milk for under $6.) Of course, the options are a little different at YC (and if I was looking for an evening snack and wanted to sit down, I'd definitely go to Crew's Cup.) It really wasn't a problem to stop at BC Marketplace on the way back from Epcot and they packaged up dinner #2 in a paper bag with a handle, so it was great. But I do like having BC Marketplace close to our room when staying at BC.

As for Ale and Compass, this is the second time I intended to take photos of the breakfast there, but once again, I failed. Another poster provided a photo of the small case of pastries last year, and again I just didn't feel that I could add much. We initially intended to grab breakfast at Ale and Compass at least one morning, but our 5-year-old requested Cape May and Hollywood and Vine - since it was just the two of us, I booked ADRs at both. (I recommend both for the 5-and-under crowd - even though I don't eat much breakfast, he ate very well and had such a great time with the characters that I felt they were both a good value for us in the end.)

As for TS, I love Yachtsman for dinner and Cape May for breakfast. But it's easy to get to Yachtsman from BC and Cape May from YC, so that's a wash.

For those interested in the BWI comparison, I'd rank BC/YC above BWI for CS and TS. The BC Marketplace is far more convenient for us than the Boardwalk Bakery and the CS stands on the Boardwalk. And we prefer Yachtsman and Cape May over Flying Fish and ESPN (have not been to Kouzinna.) They are all so close to each other that I don't really think it makes much difference for TS.

4) Refill mugs. I'm a big fan of the refill mug, even when staying CL, so self-serve refill stations are very important to me. Since BC has the Marketplace, BC wins there. Ale and Compass has the self-serve coffee, but the rest is not self-serve. BWI doesn't have any self-serve refill stations, but that's not a problem if you're staying CL.

5) Rooms. Wow - I loved that YC room so much more than I expected. It seems like it's identical to BC except: a) full balcony guarantee; b) decor - mostly color scheme; and c) the sliding glass door and large windows in our YC room were unlike any of the BC rooms I've stayed in before. But that last one isn't necessarily a difference, because I can see from the outside that BC has several rooms with sliding glass doors and large windows. It just seems (again, from the outside) that this set-up is more prevalent at YC, along with the full balconies.

So in the end, I still prefer the BC decor, with YC and BWI tied for second. When choosing between BC and YC, I'd have to decide if I prefer that decor enough to outweigh the more likely full balcony, sliding glass door and large windows. I think it does. Edited to add: I'm not sure - I really loved that sliding glass door and huge windows. I just don't know = split stays or alternating between YC and BC.

6) Location. Another wash. BC is closer to Epcot, but YC is close to the boat dock. Maybe slight advantage to YC for us because we tend to use the YC side of SAB much more than the BC side.

In the end, BC is still my favorite resort and our 5-year-old said the same. We had a wonderful stay at YC and I'm so glad we tried it. We're likely to continue choosing BC over YC, even with the balcony issue. Again, much of this is just personal preference and a strong sentimental attachment to BC. And when we stay at BWI, it will only be if we book CL and for part of a split stay with BC. (BWI CL is outstanding and really what will keep us going back there for a night or two either before or after BC.)

I hope this is helpful and I'm happy to try to answer any questions!

Four and a half pages since this morning!!! :scared1:

Dee What the heck are you doing up so early??? Is this normal for you?

Yup, getting up early is my MO. Weekends, holidays, vacations- I'm always up early. 6 am is sleeping in. Now if you see posts from me after 10 PM, that is when you need to worry.

:surfweb:

Well by this time tomorrow me and my dd will be on our flight to Orlando!!!

I do have a question though. So tomorrow night we have a reservation at 6:55 at Kona, my original intention was to eat dinner there and then watch the fireworks from the beach. I think the fireworks aren't until 10 though?? Any idea what else we could do to kill time?

Have a great trip!

The night my family ate at 'Ohana, I stayed behind at the Poly while they returned to the resort. I walked out onto the beach with a book to read and my camera (and bug repellant wipes too- July). I just sat on the beach and watched the castle turn pretty colors. Then at 9, the Electrical Water Parade made its way around the Lagoon. I never even opened my book. Then, fireworks at 10. I took a cab back from the Poly and I kid you not, I was back in my room by around 10:30.

As of last night, we're booked for July at the Beach Club, 19-26 to be exact! We are so excited to be going back to what, for us, feels like home! :goodvibes

:welcome: back! I'll add you to the guest list

Just back last night. Trip was wonderful.

Thanks for the report about your trip. Glad the kids had a memorable band trip.

So glad you had a Great Trip!!!

did you say.......Lobster Salad???.....that sounds sooo good!! Is this a new item?

This was in the lounge one night for us in July 2010. It was YUM!

After many years - we are returning to Disney this August. We will be staying at the Yacht Club. I have recently been reading all the great info from this thread....better than most other sources....so I just want to send a big THANKS! You all have been very helpful!:)

:welcome: and thanks for the kind words.

If you would like to be added to the Page 1 Be Our Guest list, please let us know your dates in August. :yay:

Thanks to Dee's hard work and everyone's pics, this thread is kept completely updated!!!

You are going to love the resort!!!

Thanks!

thanks for the tip, I will have to check it out in May!!!

I am going to try Starring Rolls for the first time in June with the teens. I'm sure I can lure them there for lunch with descriptions of the cupcakes. I hear the sandwiches are GINORMOUS and they also have grab and go sushi as a meal option.

Some people get a group gift for concierge CMs, like a sampling of local specialties.

Any pics from the YC standard room balcony? Trying to see how "unpleasant" the view could be.

Thanks!

When I get a chance to look at my "view file" I can see what I have. A lot of the YC SV will overlook the YC front entrance parking lot. JanetMom has some pictures posted in her trip report of her standard YC view. She posted a link to the report recently.
