2011 Wine & Dine Halloween 5k Fun Run

Thought I'd join in the fun...
I'm registered for the 5K, booked for 4 nights at ASMu. Used a 35% off pin I got at the beginning of the year so I got a deeper discount through that rather than doing the special rate by registering. Will also be doing MNSSHP on 9/30. I'm using C25K for training and I'm finishing up week 2...however, I'm doing each week twice. So next week will start week 3, round 1. :)

Welcome Mary! I am doing the 5K and DH is doing the 1/2. I am doing C25K too. I did W2D1 today. :)

Hello,

I noticed people from the W&D half marathon were also in this thread to I thought I would pop in and say hello. My parent are coming down with me to support me and my dad decide to do his first 5k ever.

He has a bad ankle so he will be walking. He is a big kid at heat and I think he is doing just to see the characters.

Hi Courtney!!! My DH is doing the 1/2 and I am doing the 5K. I originally signed up because I thought if he was going to get a medal, I want one too!!! Of course now that I have started training, it may have actually turned me into a runner!!!:rotfl:

For anyone on this thread who has already completed a Disney 5K, did you find it hard to "walk" it? What I mean is, was there such a crowd surge, that you felt compelled to run, even if your intentions were to walk? I read a trip report on the Dis today about a family that completed the Everest 5K/obstacle course. It sounded like the mom felt like she had to run to not get run down, even though she planned on walking. It makes me a little nervous with my mom and kids if we are "forced" to run.

I can't believe how big this thread has gotten so quickly! Great job everyone.

I ran yesterday for the first time since....the EE in 2009. I have to say it was not pleasant, but ran today again and was better. I only did 1.8 miles each day and walked the rest to make it a full 2 miles. I hope to run at least 2x a week until Sept, hoping that I will make 3 miles my regular distance sometime in August. When I did the Princess in 2009 I had never even ran past 2 miles until the race :rotfl2:

To answer your question about walking, when I did the EE I was with a walker, and yes the first half mile you do feel the surge. But she could not jog past the half mile mark so she walked it. There are so many people walking that they should not feel pressured- the beginning everyone is just so excited it is finally time to go, then reality sets in.

Thanks for the information. I was hoping it was what you said--the initial excitement of it all. Sounds like you're well on your way to training for this 5K. I am really excited about it. I just want my family to have a good time, since I'm the one who said we should do it.

I haven't done an Expedition Everest Challenge, but I did do the 5K before the Princess, Donald, and last year's Wine & Dine. There was a really long starting chute. If you lined up in the wrong area, then you would be starting off at a different pace. What I mean is, the "Walk" pace group is at the back of the pack. There isn't a way you could run. You kind of shuffle along for the first thousand yards or so. I think the EEC is a little bit more time/goal oriented, less like a fun run.

Thanks for the info. It would seem that if we hung towards the back that we probably wouldn't get a chance to run until a little ways into it just because of the crowd. I don't want to be too far in the back though because my Mom and two girls are going to need all of the 16 minutes/mile they can get.

While it is good to try to maintain the 16 minute/mile pace, they are not as strict during the 5K as they are with a half or the full. And you are correct, if they want to jog a little bit of it, they will be opportunities.

I just got back from doing C25K - W2D3. I learned that I do much better when I listen to music when I run instead of a podcast. I also made the mistake of looking at W3D1 and I am TERRIFIED!!! 3 minutes of continuous running seems CRAZY to me at this point. I was dying a 1 1/2 minutes. Wednesday should be...interesting...

That is a relief to know. I was wondering how strict they were with pacing in the 5K, I was hoping it wasn't as serious as the half or full. Our walk this morning was the fastest my girls have done so far in the 3 weeks since they started. We went 2.22 miles at 15 min/mile pace--so at least I know we are on the right track--and that was just strictly walking.

OMG I know!! I was supposed to start W3 this week....but temps have been in the 100s going on into the evening. Plus my husband started a new work schedule so I have to figure out a new running schedule myself. So today I'll be doing W2D3 again before jumping into W3...and my goodness I am not looking forward to the jump. lol

Grrr. I just bought a new pair of Saucony's. Received them two days ago. Went for two separate 35 minute walks over the last two days and noticed the mesh has holes in it where my big toe (on each foot) lifts up when I walk. Hoping shoebuy will honor my request to call the pair defective and refund my $$$. Seriously, a $100 pair of sneakers shouldn't fall apart after 5 miles of walking, right?
