2011 Wine & Dine Halloween 5k Fun Run

My family and I will be at the MNSSHP on Friday and doing the race on Saturday morning as well. Great minds think alike I guess!!

Fun! Maybe we will see you. We are dressing up as pirates for the halloween party and at the Race we will have t-shirts that say "DIS Sisters"

My husband and niece are running the 1/2 marathon and I am running the 5K with a bunch of WONDERFUL people I have met here on the DIS! We have been training with the C25K Program. It is a great program!! The best is to download some podcasts with the music and voice that tells you when to run/when to walk. Our plan is to go to MNSSHP on Friday night and then the races are Saturday- so I think we are going to be tired, but when are you not tired in Disney!? We are so excited!!

We are doing the same thing....MNSSHP and then the race.:thumbsup2

Us too!! :thumbsup2

All Ya'll (plural for Ya'll) are going to have such a great time. Being a little more experienced I love to pop in on threads that are heavily newby oriented. You bring an excitement to the event that I sorely miss.

You also, remind my of my very first 5k. It was a really, really small event. It was also in August along the Gulf Coast. I started from near the back, thinking I was a slow runner. I was passed by an 80 somehting year old about a mile in. He kindly told me to keep on moving. It was not too long later that I heard the fan on the tailing cop car and the pitter patter of some one else. I was beat and looking for a path out. Then at the line I was passed by the guy's wife! We were given the same time and I was happy to not be last - well kind of since it was a tie

Thanks! How fun to have this experience with your girls. We are leaving the kids at home for this one, but if all goes well I hope to bring them some day. I am sure your youngest will forgive you once the even gets here. :rotfl:

Yes, I think once she gets her medal and goody bag all will be forgiven. :)
I really wanted to try the 1/2 relay with my DH, but since we are leaving the next morning we decided just to stick with the 5K. I hope we enjoy the race as much as we think we will so we can get back someday for another one.

Good luck with your training!

Lots of people seem to like the "Couch to 5K" program. It combines walking with intervals of jogging to build you up slowly. I am walking this race because my mom and kids are doing it along with my husband and I. My girls are 10 and almost 8 and we are walking 5 mornings a week about 2-2.5 miles/day to get them mentally/physically ready for the walk. They are both athletic kids, but 3.1 miles is a long way for those little legs, so I want to build up their stamina, especially since we are doing the 5K on the last full day of our trip. So far my 10 yo thinks the walking is fun, but my youngest thinks I'm the meanest mom ever on summer vacation.

Don't underestimate them, my DD ran the 5K in Feb at the Princess Half and she did AMAZING :lovestruc She is also 8 and she will be running the 5K at the Wine & Dine as well. It was awesome running with her and since she ran a 3K last month and a bunch of 1Ks and 1 milers. I have a future runner ;)

That is awesome! My 8 yo definitely has a good stride and paces herself well, I think she just gets a little bored and has a mental hill to overcome. I hope that my girls will develop an appreciation for these races. It would certainly help my efforts at getting to Disney more often since my husband loves to run. :thumbsup2

Whats great about the Disney runs is stopping for the characters, that was what my daughter loved....LOL So if your DD's like mine she will run faster because she wanted to see who the next character was. It was great. You all will have a blast! Maybe I will see you there ;) Also my daughter was super excited to wear a costume for the run, so maybe see if your DD's would like to dress up.

Hello all! I have decided to take the plunge and register for the 5K! My husband is doing the 1/2 so I figured I should do something. I am NOT a runner, but I am pretty active. ( Taekwondo & Yoga). Can anyone recommend a good training program?

Do they have a Running Room in Colorado? (Running gear store + running programs)
I started with their Learn to Run prog, 10wks, comparable to C25K, but there's an actual clinic session once a week with some sort of "seminar": running gear, running style, running nutrition, yoga, stretching, etc) AND you're not running alone!

This is about 1 yr in for me, and wow, I so love it! I like to walk alot, and no prob doing it alone but for running, I like to be part of a crew, it keeps me going. We did 15 k last Sunday!

This will be my first 5K and I'm doing the Couch to 5K program. I'm doing the last day of week 4 today. It's been great so far. The first day of week 4 was the hardest - running that 1/2 mile was tough. But once I did it once, it became easier the next time. Just knowing you can do it is half the battle!

I'm so excited about this! When I get tired on my runs now, I just tell myself to imagine I'm turning a corner at AK and there stands Donald Duck!!!!! :goodvibes

I've been using the same type of imagery to help my girls get through the walking. I keep telling them that there will be characters all along the route, but I don't think they really believe me yet!

How did everyone's runs go today? I did not run today because I have 2 1/2 hours of Taekwondo, but tomorrow I am set to do C25K W1D3. :)

I did not run yesterday. I opted for a large platter of nachos instead. :rolleyes1

I like your thinking.:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I am a volunteer coach for our local branch of Special Olympics Texas, and last night was our annual end of season party. This year it was hosted at Lucky Strike bowling alley, with pizza, cake and sodas. I am proud to say that I resisted the temptation to bury my face in the food, but a fellow volunteer and marathoner in training was smackin away at pizza, and it almost got me!!! I think that had it been nachos, I might not have survived such temptation. :)

However, the best part of the night, is when I was escorting our 73 year old assisted walker back to my car so that I could drive him home, and I asked how many cokes did he drink and he proudly said "just 1!" It was adorable. :woohoo:

That is a great story! Coke is one of my vices too.

Yummy! Seriously, I have a weakness for Nachos!

I only do 3 runs a week. With working full time and having a 9-month-old, that's all I have time for. And I have to do those on my lunch break. Yesterday I did the first run of week 5 of C25K. I'm getting this 1/2-mile-of-running thing down pretty good. Now if I can just multiply that times 6, I'm good! :rotfl: I've got plenty of time to work on it and I'm sure I'll be fine by the time the 5K gets here. And I find that it gets easier every time I do it. Right now I'm doing about a 14-minute mile, but that's with the walking thrown in. And my goal is to run the whole thing. We shall see!!!

No running today for me....I'm doing the FIRST TRaining Program and I only run 3 days a week and cross train 2 and weights 1 or 2 depending.
But I did run yesterday, it was my Tempo Run an I ran 6 miles and got a PR...woohoo...never got a PR in my training runs. It was only be a few seconds but that could mean good things in my next race which is next week :banana:

Tomorrow is my long run, 11 miles.

Love nachos but haven't had them in about a year....mybe that will be my celebration food after the Disney Half ;)

Thought I'd join in the fun...
I'm registered for the 5K, booked for 4 nights at ASMu. Used a 35% off pin I got at the beginning of the year so I got a deeper discount through that rather than doing the special rate by registering. Will also be doing MNSSHP on 9/30. I'm using C25K for training and I'm finishing up week 2...however, I'm doing each week twice. So next week will start week 3, round 1. :)
