2011 Marching Band Season post--already....

Both of which schools -- yours and B-wood? You know I'm rooting for you! :cheer2:

My DS is *loving* only having practice once a week now... Well, until and if the team goes to State again, then they'll have to practice more. But for now, he is thrilled with having free time again! :thumbsup2

According to what the kids have been told, Brook & Pearland have to win for us to qualify. They didn't say anything about B-wood.

Ah! Well, we'll be happy to accomodate you on that!! :thumbsup2

Good luck to all still competing! Our band is marching at the last football game of the season tonight. Its nearly 3 hours away, so they will get home arund 2a.m. DS Tuba Dude isnt at the game. The kids competing in district band tomorrow are at the school, doing one last rehearsal. They leave at 6:30 a.m. For that contest. Only about 9 spots for Tubas. Fingers crossed for Tuba Dude!

Tomorrow is Championships and I am so sad that I am missing it. I am in charge of the cub scout side of a joint campout between our troop and pack.

There are 28 bands in our class and I think it will come down to any one of three in the top spot. We have not competed against one of them and the other beat us last weekend by one point.

The kids have to be at school at 8 and their prelim performance is around noon. They will change and take the bus to a nearby school where they can eat and rehearse for a couple of hours. They will go back for awards and hopefully a finals performance. If they make finals they will be ready to be picked up a little after midnight.

Next week they head to BOA nationals for the first time ever.

Tomorrow is our big rival football game. DS has to be at the high school at 9 am for practice and getting ready. Pregame, which is combined with the other school, starts at 12:30.

This week was Spirit Week, and the sections of the band always do something "fun". The underclassmen decorate the seniors houses with streamers and t.p. and banners. The seniors usually do something for the underclassmen that involves instrument cases and a ton of candy in the bandroom.

Today, DS16 gets to school, and all of the trumpet cases for the underclassmen are wrapped in saran wrap. Ok---it's been done before- no biggie. You just unwrap the layers so you can open it and get the candy in your case. Well, the ^&%@ seniors this year put layers of CRISCO between the layers of saran wrap. GRRRRRR. My DS16 has a fabric trumpet case. Big grease spots all over it. I am not a happy mother. To make matters worse, at least in my DS's opinion, they did not give anyone candy!! He had to donate $10 for this!! The band directors don't have a part in it, nor do they ever say anything about the bad decisions that seem to have been made. I am so annoyed!! I am not going to say anything, because it will just fall on deaf ears, and even if someone does listen, my DS will probably get grief.

Next year, he will be a senior, and there are only three of them next year- so he already said he will be in charge and there is NO way he will let anyone do anything damaging to anyone's instrument or case.

So, anyway, bonfire was tonight- big game tomorrow- rescheduled Halloween parade on Sunday. After that, games and parades are over! (unless we make it to play-offs...)

I don't have kids in band anymore but I love reading about all of yours and what the bands are doing.

There is an article in today's Dallas Morning News about the Poteet High School band losing their spot in the State Marching Contest. They are a 4A school. I haven't read the article yet, a friend of mine text me about it. Apparently one of the band members failed a class and was ineligible when they marched. The band directors turned themselves in. Sometimes the grading periods and marching competitions over lap.

My cousin has a daughter in the Poteet band. I bet the kids are crushed. They've gone to State a lot and actually won twice in the last 10 years.

Yep, I think they said on the news that it was a 1st year band director and flat just missed the ineligible student. Very sad for those kids though.

Thanks for the update, I'll have to go find the article - at the time I saw the posting on the txband forum, someone was saying they were still in. The later update said they lost their spot and added the student was overlooked in the original ineligible list of band students sent to the director because he was an extra-curricular student running the sound board. Poteet is a great school & great band and that is sad for the kids! Major kudos to the director for doing the honorable, correct but very devastating thing. Very classy!

I have been afraid to post all season since we were warned so drastically not to post on public forums but, we have had a good year. So far DD's band has won 1st place in every competition and "swept all captions". I have absolutely no idea what that means.
I just dropped DD off for their trip to San Antonio for BOA competition. I think it's a great experience for her.

Woo hoo! If your school is the school I believe it is, I absolutely, positively LOVE LOVE LOVE your show!!!! I saw it at BOA Houston & and yes, your daughter's band has had an incredible year.

We're not making the trip to SA this year since we went to BOA Atlanta last week missing a football game and would miss today's game as well. It was a major effort to get permission to miss last week's game - two in a row wasn't possible. We had to promise to attend playoffs should the team advance - today's the day - if they win they advance... Not sure which team to root for.... :rolleyes1 (I'm kidding....)

I have to satisfy myself reading the txbands live blog during BOA - SA. The guys do a great job and I enjoy their recaps & positive comments about each band. It is truly a labor of love for them.

Good luck to their band! What a great & busy week for the kids! Sleep is highly over-rated.... ;)

Went on a college visit with the twins yesterday and the school has a very large, 300 large, marching band. Several kids from our high school are in the band so that is fun. If the kids end up going there DS will march but DD will probably not be able to because of conflicts with golf, which she is ok with.

Good luck in their decisions! DS is taking the SATs today. He is looking & tossed most of his school choices up in the air since he's now changing his area of study. One of his schools that remained constant is a small satellite school specializing in his interest. He toured a few weeks ago & he discovered they do have a spirit & ceremonial band. Plus he can be a civilian member of the band unlike the main campus. It's an exciting and nerve-wracking time for the kids as they start to make these major decisions.

Just dropped off DS for the big game today. Every year, the band does a "tag on" for this final show. Rumor has it, there may be a fly-by of fighter jets... In previous years, they've had parachuters, and cannons....all kinds of "surprises" in the show. I'll let you know what this year's surprise is when I get home!

Hoping to take some video so you can see what our band does...

Wow, how cool! Someone has some connections! :) I hope you do get video, I can't wait to see it!

They are juniors so we have some time yet, just trying to fit these visits in around marching band :lmao:. We can't really go on any in the fall since they have competitions pretty much every weekend so we are trying to get them done this year. They both have 4 schools they would be happy to attend so that is good. DS's #1 is Notre Dame and if he goes there, he will march for sure-how could you NOT :lmao:. The school we went to yesterday is now his #2-and probably where he will end up going unless someone comes up with $53,000 in aid for him at ND :lmao:

Yep, I am sure you can figure it out by my city name and the fact they win a lot. This years show is just incredible. I absolutely love the music and the marching.

I can only imagine it's even better since I saw it in Houston, too!

Onto concert band! Tuba Dude just auditioned for District Band...got First band second chair! Yay!

Concert band auditions were this week for us too. DS was 3rd chair second band last year and moved up to 3rd chair first band...that's 8 seats better than last year and he beat his arch-rival! :) Double bonus.

Just home from the game. We lost in the last minute by a field goal. First loss against the rival team in 18 years!

What a show the band put on!!! Holy Cow!!! No fly-bys, but there were fireworks! DH is downloading the video to Youtube so I will post when it is up.

We've got another week of marching band, the football team won & will advance to playoffs. As my son said, another week of marching band, another week of rehearsals, another week of a lot of homework and another week of no sleep.

Looks like they had a great run in prelims - onto finals! Great job!
