2011 Marching Band Season post--already....

i know! when the lady at the music store said $41.99, i almost passed out! i can buy them from woodwind & brasswind through sunshine rewards for $19.99 per box and get cash back! i'll buy the gloves at the music store, since DD will need to try them on to get a good fit. too bad we're just going to cut out the fingertips, lol.

i wish our band shoes could be worn for dress shoes, but they're white, lol, and the kids would probably mess them up.

not sure how many competitions we're doing this fall. last fall, while DD was a lowly band manager, we did 2, but i think there are at least 4 on the schedule this year.

Our band does a mass order for the gloves and they are one size fits all. They have gauntlets as part of their uniform and that holds them on pretty well. They are just cheep polyester gloves, nothing fancy.

I am VERY glad we don't have white pants/shoes. Broken Arrow used to have uniforms that were half white half black and had shoes made to match--very cool looking though.

i wish our HS would do a mass order for gloves, so i wouldn't have to drive to town to get them! i know, that sounds lazy, but when the heat index is pushing 110 degrees F, i just don't wanna leave home if i don't have to, lol.

Not lazy, just smart :lmao:

We have the same parking lot/football field set up as golfgal. We do have a 2 story tower built, that the director and several of the assistance are up on during a good portion of the practices. It gives them the same view that the judges will have during competitions.

The only time we are actually on the football field is on our Thursday night practices. That is the night at we go until 8. The band can get on the field after their dinner break gets over at 5:45.

We also have an asphalt practice field with the director's tower.

We're not allowed on the football field except MAYBE the practice before State. The football team and coaching staff is concerned that we will tear up the grass by marching on it...

:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

We get on the football field quite often-we have WAY more state championships then our football team has.

Our band also orders gloves and sells them for $3 a pair. I buy several, because my absent-minded 16 year old loses at least one glove every two weeks. :lmao: They are just cotton gloves, and come in small/med/large. Our uniforms also have gauntlets and that is where they keep their gloves when they are in the stands. We also have to buy a beret, which they wear in the stands. Our hats are bearskins, and if they wore those in the stands, nobody would be able to see over the person in front of them. So, they shove the beret (red wool with the band patch on the front) inside their bearskin, and just take it out when they need to put it on.

Freshman year is more pricey than other years: you need to buy gloves, the beret, the red band t-shirt that they wear under their uniform, a garment bag, and shoes. The shoes need to be black military style shoes. No seams, and need a square heel. They have to shine. I bought my DS's freshman year, and thank GOD they still fit! They were $80!! He does wear them as dress shoes with black dress pants from time to time, but still!

After you buy all the basic stuff, it's only a uniform fee of $10 a year (for drycleaning). We have a band seamstress who hems all of the uniforms and does repairs. She maintains the uniform closet and does all of the fittings. She attends every band function and goes on every trip. She is a whiz!!

On non-trip years, the fair share is $175 and that covers transportation to away games, and other stuff. Trip years are crazy. They went to Disney in February, and that trip was $1500. They are going to Hawaii in November, and that trip is $2500. The band directors made it clear that they understood if you needed to choose one trip over the other, and there are some kids who did just that. For us, though, both were such an awesome experience that I couldn't make him choose. It was our choice to sacrifice in order to send him on both trips. We do some selling (right now, it's pizzas and mums), but you can only ask people to buy so much. My parents have been great about giving him money towards his fair share...they are awesome!

My DS12 is in 7th grade this year and in the MS band, and that's also an expense. We pay a $25 uniform fee for him, and the trip this year will be $305 for ONE night. They take buses, so only go as far as they can drive in two days. Last year they went to Pittsburgh. I heard they are going to Baltimore this year. They participate in the Music in the Parks competitions. Of course, this year, he will also be in Orchestra and Jazz band (he is a percussionist), so there are added expenses of dress shirts for those.

Yes, being in band is expensive...but I would not trade it for anything! In general, band kids are GOOD kids, and they have both made great friends. Most of their friends are the over-achiever, honors types, which is a good influence on them both. If I had to pick one thing for them to be involved with, band would be it!!

Our band does a big trip every 3rd year so everyone has the opportunity to go on at least one. They went to Hawaii in 2010 and to China the trip before that. No word yet on where they will go in 2013 but rumor has it that is is Australia. The China trip was $2300 and Hawaii was $1900. They can use fundraising money to offset the cost of the trip and they have a "parent" trip planned where we do our own thing but see them for concerts.

They also offer tag-along trips...but the prices are crazy. For Hawaii, 3 to a room was $2100 a piece. That is for 6 nights, and includes admissions to some of the places that the band will be, plus transportation, but no food. We thought about going for about a millisecond, but quickly regained our senses! We just don't have that kind of money laying around.

I did go to Disney, but not as a tag-along. I guess this is where being a Disney nut comes in handy, because when they came out with the prices, I knew I could do better on my own. My BFF and her daughter went with me and my younger DS. We shared a room, got free dining, and basically cheaped everything out. We had a great trip!

Did you go to China with the band? That must have been quite an experience!! Our band used to go to England every 3 or 4 years, but when 9/11 hit, the school district no longer allowed either of our HS bands to travel abroad.

ETA: the band doesn't usually go on two trips in the same year. They usually do every third year as well. However, they had already planned the Disney trip, and then this invitation to go to Hawaii came through. They were invited to be the honor band for the 75th Anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and the organizer of the event is a huge fan and supporter of the band. The current seniors will have been on THREE trips...they march in the Tournament of Roses Parade as freshmen. I really feel for those parents...what a ton of money! But then again...what an AWESOME experience!!!

our band does a big trip every other school year, and this is the year they're supposed to go. i have no idea where it will be, or how much. in the 2009-2010 school year, they went to NYC and had a blast-personally, i'm hoping for WDW, but not holding my breath, lol. we're a small, country high school, band numbers about 60, give or take a few, so i don't think we'll be going to hawaii or australia anytime soon (but i wish!). DH, DD13 and i gave up vacationing this summer, so we could afford to go on the band trip-it'd better be worth it! the band director is kind of unorganized and likes to fly by the seat of his pants, so i may have to offer to be his unofficial secretary.

Our band does Disney every other year. They went last March and didn't march bc it rained ALL day at the MK. The trip cost $590 plus meals. The 590 was bus, hotel, park tix, and a few meals. We didn't chaperone but the price was the same for chaperones. We flew down, stayed in a condo and then picked up ds the last day to go to Universal.

Junior high band is FREE. They wear black and white to the concerts.

My niece was in The Ohio State Marching band...now that was some big bucks for my brother, especially getting tickets to all her games and going on the bowl game trips.

No, I didn't go to China, still kicking myself for NOT going though. DS had an amazing time and would love to go back.

well, well, well....i TRIED to guesstimate what size gloves DD13 would need earlier, by holding her hand up to mine, and she whimpered and took on like pressing the palm of her hand against mine was killing her. SO, unless i get a HUUUUUUUUGE apology from her in the morning, little miss prissy pants is going to be walking the 15 miles to the music store in town to buy her own flippin' gloves, instead of mom picking them up tomorrow while i'm in town! i refuse to bow to the teenage tantrum!

Well, DS did end up biking all the way to the state border and back -- a 70 mile round trip. So today was his first day of band camp. According to what he told me, he wasn't the only one who missed yesterday. That still doesn't make it right, but the band director was apparently impressed that my DS contacted her ahead of time to let her know.

We also got the uniform costs -- the school supplies the jacket and gloves, we buy the pants and shoes. White shoes, unfortunately. It was $40 for the pants and $25 for the shoes. He also got a flip book (although he's working on memorizing the music). He also got a list of all the band members -- by my count there's 139 members.

I haven't heard anything at all about competitions or trips -- I'm not sure if our band does anything like that. I am excited that I'll get to see him perform with the band next week -- our school district is having a big rally for all the employees, and they've invited all the substitute teachers and cafeteria workers too. I wasn't going to go, but then DS came home with the information regarding performing there.

Know I didn't know this tidbit before last night I'll never know. I have a music crazy teen DD in the house.

We had our parent booster meeting last night. In talking about fund raising for the year, it was mentioned at our band directors brother had offered to do a benifit concert for our band. I was sitting there kinda going....ok, who's his brother?

The one mom told me his name, didn't ring a bell. Said he goes by a different name on the radio, The Ready Set, because of their last name being confussing to many. Still didn't ring a bell. She told me to ask the kids when I got home.

I had to pick up DD at the dance studio, so while I was in there I asked her and a couple of her friends who is The Ready Set. I got that hello look that only teens can give and the next thing I know several of them are singing one of his songs - Love Like Woe. Now I know who this kid is. That's a nationally played song. I know I have heard it on the radio.

The kids asked why I wanted to know. Told them he may being doing a concert here for our band. If he does, I know where I can sell a couple dozen tickets. They just about lost their minds. I told DD when we got in the car, where the connection to our band was and she thinks that would be the coolest thing for him to do.

If we can make this happen, this would bring in a lot of money for our band. I am keeping my fingers crossed!!

Not quite joining, but maybe.

DS signed up for Percussion at school, unaware that it is also Marching Band. Which would mean stopping his guitar lessons and no sports.

I was all ready for him to come home from camp and say he didn't want to be in MB.

However, he was facebooked by an upper classman (DS will be a freshman in hs this year) who DS has mentioned several times about being an awesome drummer asking if he had any interst in joining the Percussion group.

Thank goodness DS is making this choice and not me! I am losing my mind with all the decisions he has to make and school doesn't start for another month (but MB practice starts on the 16th - possibly sooner if what I read on the Facebook page is correct and they want to start practicing next week!).

Practice would be in the evening - 5:30p until 8p. DS would need to miss one day already for a concert (a chance to see the bass player from Nirvana perform with The Presidents of the United States of America - a "once in a lifetime" thing for him, as he is a HUGE Nirvana fan - see our location, LOL).

So..... I just may be joining your Marching Band group..... We will know more on Monday!

:)

Band camp day 5 and the kids are so good. Our director is not a glass half full kind of guy :rolleyes1 and he is praising these kids like crazy. Either he is pleased or he changed his meds. :rotfl2: That said I think they sound great.

Why wouldn't he be able to do sports? We have a very successful, high caliber band, and our directors work with the coaches so that kids can do both. There has been a football player or two who was also in band...they wear their football uniform during the field show and march with the band. It may not win points in a competition, but I think it's really cool that our directors/coaches are willing to work together so kids can pursue all of their interests!

I have no idea if he can do sports for sure.

Practice is after school, which is when sports practice is. I don't know the ins and outs of the whole high school music thing (and attempting to figure it out stresses me out, LOL).

I know my son is interested in playing basketball, but his true love is music. So I am just doing my best to encourage and root him on for what he will really want to do.

He comes home from camp tomorrow, so we will have to figure out stuff this weekend. What he wants to do, etc.

our band camp was pretty much rained out today. the kids practiced their music in the band room, but they had nowhere to march. it rained and thunderstormed ALL DAY LONG, which is very unusual for alabama in the summertime. showers usually come and go very quickly.

DD13 did eventually apologize, after some prodding from her dad, so, of course, i went to town today for some other errands, and bought her gloves. thankfully, they fit her, and her section leader offered to cut out the fingertips for her.

band fee ($175.00) is paid, just have to order shoes from the school and buy reeds online, and i think we're set. can't wait for the first band booster meeting!

DS16 brought home the price list today. Freshmen owe $200, DS owes $148 because he already has the polo and the shoes. Our fees include: meals at contests, marching shoes, uniform dry cleaning, polo shirt, show t shirt, tech fee, gloves, band banquet meal, $40 deposit for trip.

I think our prices are great. This years trip is to St Louis. It is supposed to be $350. Next year is Ireland, $2,500 and we will have 2 in band. Last year was $1000 for Orlando. The kids can do fundraisers to raise their money for the trips.

Day 2 of Band Camp here today. So far DS is happy! Its so hot, so they march in the morning and play inside in the afternoon.
