Done both. Disney transfers when we did the 3-day, 4-night package out of POR and a private company (can't remember the name right now) when we went straight from the airport hotel where we stayed the night before a 4-day cruise (tacked on a one-night stay after at WL). I have to vote the private carrier. I also agree that getting there a little early before the crowd arrives is much easier on everyone, especially getting on board early.
Teena, do you still get the check-in at the resort if you are doing a land-sea package? Seems that we used the same KTTW card for both resort and ship, but it's been a while since we've done it. We are in the exploration phase right now for a family gathering on-board (probably the Magic) some time in 2012 or 2013. I figure it will take me that long to save the money to pay for all the kids, spouses and any little ones that might pop up in-between now and then.
No, they totally changed it recently. There are no longer cruise line desks at the resorts and there is no check-in at the resorts. The morning when a ship departs, at the cruise resorts, a cruise CM will be walking around the lobby with a clipboard. They basically answer questions, DO NOT check you in, and they put you on the bus.
Pixarmom, tell the kids that if you go early with a private company, you can have a leisure lunch, get into your cabin, change into your swim suit (pack them in your carry-on) and be in the pool by 2 PM, which is about the time the people on the cruise bus will be arriving and getting checked in and will be walking into lunch. Tell them later in the day the pool will be real real crowded!! And then it's the lifeboat drill so they will be able to experience so much more fun if they go early in the private car! Also, have them stop and buy a case of water (and maybe beer if you want) as you can take this on board on a Disney cruise. We always take Bob's bourbon, my beer and water. It saves soooo much money. Disney doesn't care ... there are signs in the security area that says no alcohol but Disney allows you to take it on board. I watched a family walk on board in December with two cases of water and two cases of beer.

Guess Spring Break has started! But we were just in WDW late Jan, and past years have practically had everything walk on, but this Jan, we found the crowds larger then past years. More tour groups to.
