Al Lutz on Miceage reported this today:

"Muppet Message

With all the talk about D23 and Halloween and upcoming park plans, it's easy to forget that the What Will You Celebrate campaign is winding down. The replacement ad blitz obviously will be featuring the Muppets, as they recently wrapped up a very full week of filming all over Disneyland.

The new campaign will still have a free give-away component, but they are going at it much smarter this time. The free on your birthday gimmick in 2009 was a huge headache for the Main Entrance ticketing departments, and the free retail gift cards handed out to hundreds of thousands of Annual Passholders who wanted their piece of the action were not only a drain on park profits, but also caused quite a bit of drama for the Guest Relations Cast Members who had to deal with any passholder who didn't want to follow the rules based on the block out dates of their particular pass.

The new campaign for 2010 will allow anyone a free ticket to Disneyland, but only after they complete a certain number of volunteer hours in their community with a Disney approved charity or nonprofit organization. It's looking like a much classier angle to take to free admission, and it should eliminate much of the hassles the front line Cast Members had to deal with during 2009."

Personally I think it sounds like a perfectly lovely idea, and I can't wait to rack up more volunteering hours for a day at Disneyland :cutie:

The volunteer hours is a nice idea.
The muppets tho?
I ain't looking forward to seeing them everywhere.

Than it's good. The attendance was up 3% this year, but profit was down 25%. I think the Celebrate promo hasn't gone quite as swimmingly as they thought.

As Al lightly touched on, people didn't read the rules, lines got crazy, etc.

The Muppets have been filming in DL already, I saw the puppet Swedish Chef being filmed in a bakery.

muppets?
rly?

and i agree, i dont see a lot of people doing that. maybe groups of kids, but regular families? not so much.

and what is he talking about the gift cards being a drain? hello...it goes right back into disney because you can only buy stuff at the parks with it....

I hope they leave the muppets out of it, but it's a nice idea I guess. I think it will be more of a hassle than the birthday thing, though. It seems like something they whipped up last minute.

No big deal really, because 2011 will be their 40th anniversary. I'm sure they'll do that up big.

Well Al Lutz is the most reputable Disney news reporter, he has many sources.

I agree with you that the gift card thing sounds unsound, but it probably limited what people bought in the parks.

Typically a person would buy admission, and then buy food and souvenirs. That's the 70 bucks + whatever they spent... lets say 100 bucks.

With the gift card for Annual Passholders, they already have admissions settled and they only buy $65 of stuff?

I don't know I'm just speculating.

seriously though, a one day ticket is like 70.00 right? i'd rather just fork over the cash. :confused3

They've already filmed the commercials with the Muppets. They've got a big following :confused3

i got the gift card becuase im an annual passholder. its the amount of a ticket, $75. and you can only use it on merchandise in the parks or at DTD. they get the money back either way. :/

We have annual passes and we're getting the gift card, but that doesn't mean we'll only spend 75 dollars on stuff.

And I like the muppets enough, but they aren't Disney enough to me. I wish they would just leave them out of it.

I'm sure the money doesn't go directly to the parks that way, though. But I don't know how merchandising works, so...

I'm excited for this. I love volunteering, but now I'll have a goal!

and you can only use the cards on merchandise. you cant use it in resteraunts, i asked. i believe you can use it at the little carts where they have popcorn and icecream, but thats it.

and the money used on merch does go back into the parks. i worked in merchandising.

Alright, well I'm not pretending to know how it works. Just guessing. :confused3
well, since disney is a multi billion dollar organization, i'm pretty sure they're using the cheapest labor possible, so they get the most money for their products, and they sell their own products on site, and every dollar you spend in disney world, goes to disney. :confused3 it just kindof makes sense that way.

All I know is I can't wait to find out what the Disney approved organizations for this are.

Ooo... Sounds like an interesting idea, with the heart in the right place. However, I agree that I don't see many of Disney's target audience heavily participating.

Muppets I can live with. A whole campain revolving around the Muppets--here's where I cringe a little. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to see more Muppets goin' on in the parks (esp Pepe the King Prawn themed things :lovestruc ) but too much can devestate. You know this if you've seen "The Muppets Take Manhattan".

The article only mentioned DL. Is the same thing going to happen in WDW or will they have something different?

And I like the Muppets.

Typically the Disney Parks campaigns relate to all of the US parks, Lutzs' audience is just mostly DL'ers.

Miceage itself is more closely connected to DL and CA than WDW.
