*** 2010-2011 *** Cheer Parent Thread

Our gym's tryouts are this weekend. I know my dd7 will most likely end up on the junior L2 team because I won't let her be on the Jr3 team as most of the girls are 11&12 and the coach is a bit (lots of sarcasm) of a yeller :scared1: They really want her on the L3 team but I just don't think it is a good fit for her at this age. She has her standing back tuck and is working on layouts, but I would rather have her compete at L2 & then work on her tumbling etc in separate tumble classes and privates. I don't want a year of screaming coaching and being with girls waaay older than her to turn her off.

I hear you.

We had tryouts in April and our teams were announced on Friday.

DD is on the special needs team (no tryouts for that) and DN ended up on the J1 team. Her tumbling is L3, as is her motions, but her stunting is not there yet. And she is a tall, skinny, all legs kid, so doesn't make a good base for the older teams.

She bumped around between the S2 team and the J1 team over the summer and it was ultimately decided to put her on the J1 team till she is more confident in her stunting. (We have absolutely no say in where our kids end up - that is all decided by the gym.)

Rather than being disappointed that she is on the J1 team, I am thrilled. I would much rather have her be successful and a leader on the J1 team rather than always worrying she would be letting the team down if she fell on her tick tock or other stunt. And she makes a great base for the littler ones now.

I asked her yesterday if she was disappointed that she is not going to be able to even do a back handspring and she said J1 is really fun. And that is the whole point right, to have fun while still being successful?

Now we are all on pins and needles waiting to hear where we will be traveling this year. We know we have two out-of-state competitions, but which ones they are is still not known.

Dallas or Cheersport will most likely be one of them, and lots of parents are hoping to go back to American Showcase in Anaheim. Our gym had a great competition there last season and many parents want to go again to see if we can do it again.

Well we have our first cheer injury under our belt. DD was basing last week and when the flyer came down from the cradle the 2nd base leaned over, dropped the flyer and her front tooth went through my daughter's forehead :scared1: 3 hours in the ER and a few stitches, and a week out of the gym we will be back in action tomorrow.

So far our tentative comp. schedule is:
December 5TH UCDF Regional

March 5TH Spiritfest CT

March 11TH - 14TH Disney

March 26TH Live RI

April 1ST - 3RD All Star Challenge Baltimore

April 8TH -10TH Final Destination Virginia Beach

April 30th Baltimore

May 1st Asbury Park NJ

May 6TH-8TH Hershey

We are from Long Island, NY so we will be traveling ALOT!

How is everybody's season going so far? My girls are excited about their new routines and can't wait for competition to start.

Anybody heading to Dallas (NCA) in Feb or Anaheim (American Showcase) in April? Those were our out of state competitions last year, so hoping they will be the same this year.

We are in SoCal and my niece's team J2, is going to Dallas for the first time this year. The J5 and Sr. goes all the time and also to Orlando. The J5 took 1st in Orlando this year.

We're having a slow start to ours. There aren't enough minis at our gym. We only have 8 so it seems if we don't get more our girls won't get to compete this year or maybe just little small, local competitions. They're doing pretty good for all beginners.

My daughter is doing really well though and she is loving it. I'm bummed that she won't compete at Disney but we may go anyway to watch.

ETA - the older teams in our gym look really good so far!

Congrats to your J5!

Our J2 and Y4 won NCA and American Showcase in Anaheim last season. However, we don't have a J2 or Y4 this season.

Good luck to your daughter's team. What is your gym so we can look for you in Dallas?

That is too bad! What a bummer for your daughter. But as long as she is loving it, that is all that counts.

Hope she has a great season.

Our year personally is starting off rocky. Our Youth L2 team that DD is on is having a really hard time with their stunts. And although DD got her R BHS Tuck she fell the other night and I think it freaked her out. So nervous about tonight's practice. Our first competition is Oct. 30th so praying they pull it together soon. :goodvibes

OK what do I do? So DD9 has been working on her round-off BHS tuck. Tues before last she got it. Last Tues...pretty tucks whole tumble practice. Tonight she tried (granted after a 2 hr practice) and busted! Fell on her neck! I FREAKED out!!!!! She's fine now and said she was more embarrassed than hurt but how do I let her go back to trying them again???? OMG this is tooo much to handle.

So after 3 years of recreation cheer competition (comps in the fall only) my DD10 has decided she wants to do an All-Star team and is trying out for the half-year team in a couple of weeks. So.......please I need any and all advice :lmao:

She's all excited since the coach for the All-Star half-year team is the training coach for the rec. team so she's familiar with her and absolutely loves her. My main concern is that she's not that great in tumbling.

The worst thing you can do is project your fears onto her. If she tumbles scared she will get hurt. Can you have her coach spot her on a few during her next tumble practice. This way she can get her jitters out and her confidence back. My dd8 is would always have her coach spot her first BHS-tuck for the first few mos. after she got it and then she would wave him off after that. She is working on her layout & punch front and is doing the same thing. I think it is harder for us to watch then it is for them to fall!

That is great for her! We love All-Star cheer! Do you know what level she will be competing at? If she is level 1 they can't do BHS and level 2 there are no tucks allowed either. Tumbling is important, but each cheerleader has their strengths and the coaches will place her according to those. Plus, in a couple of weeks, tumbling skills can improve leaps and bounds. Can you schedule some private tumbling lessons for her in between? After 2 privates my dd was able to get her standing tuck that she had been working on for 2 months in her regular tumbling classes.

So on Tues. night she did flight class and then tumble. She did her usual walkovers and BHS and three tucks with a spot. She did get nervous the first time but after she seen that he would in fact spot her she was OK. The issue with this particular coach is he stops spotting when HE thinks they don't need it any more. So I had to speak up and insist on a spot. Don't think he was too happy with it but oh well. :goodvibes I just think this is best (and so does some other coaches) until she's consistent with it. I agree though it definitely is harder for us to watch...:rotfl:

Sounds like she is well on her way to regaining her confidence! :cheer2:

Got our competition schedule. Besides regional competitions, we are headed to Dallas and Anaheim

Got to go reinstall DING to watch for flights! Right now Denver-Dallas is $318 - yuck.

Hi all! I just stumbled across this thread. My daughters are with a small gym south of Atlanta and we were told this week, we are attending UCA All star nationals @ Disney March 11-13th. My youngest will be on a tiny team and the oldest on Youth 4.

Has anyone attended this competition? Any tips, tidbits to share? I have the feeling that I won't see my 10 year old perform if its to close to the tiny team performance time. Based on last years schedule, those 2 teams were in different venues with less than 30 minutes between them. That will be really disappointing but what to do?

We've been. It is a fun competition, but very spread out. Day 1 my . daughter competed in the Indiana Jones theater in DHS and day 2 she was in the Milk House. Luckily I only had one cheering at the time, but we did have parents that had to decide to watch one kid on day 1 and the other on day 2 because they were in two different places.

When we were there, there was spring training, a lacrosse tournament + the UCA competition at WWOS, so getting to the Milk House and parking !was fun to say the least.

Our gym ran charter buses for us, but DH was driving over from Universal to watch our daughter and had a heck of a time navigating the traffic.

The day my daughter's team cheered at DHS, it was cold!! And I am from Colorado, so not wimpy about cold weather in March. The shops were full of parents and cheerleaders looking to buy sweat shirts and sweat pants. It was an interesting experience though to watch them compete outside.

But it is Disney, so that makes it all good.

Our gym has never gone back. We mainly do Cheersport, NCA and a few other smaller nationals.

The other main gym from Colorado, Peak Athletics, sends at least their Senior 5 team every year.

Hello Everyone! Well we were suppose to attend our first comp of the season last weekend however the owner of the gym canceled last min. due to feeling the teams were not ready. Well this weekend we will be in Va. Right now I'm a little nervous about DD9 who's on a youth 2 team. They have a lot of newbies that are having a hard time. I feel so bad for them all. Extra practice after practice after practice and they are still having rough practices. Pray for us :goodvibes

Hope everyone else is having a good season so far.

We are in the same boat. DD8 is on the youth level 2 team and there weren't enough girls to field a level 1 team, so they put 6 level 1 girls on the level 2 team & now we are having to compete as a large squad with 6 girls that have literally no tumbling at all :scared1: Our first competition is 2.5 weeks away and it is a mess. My poor dd hasn't figured out that they are going to get killed in the competition and I am afraid she is going to be crushed when they come in last.

Good luck to both your teams! Hope it all straightens itself out and you both have successful seasons.

We have our parent "Showoff" on Sunday, but for most of our teams our first competition isn't until mid December. Our level 5's will be traveling to Denton, Tx next weekend, but the rest of our kids are still in practice mode.

They do get their new uniforms tomorrow though!! Can't wait to see them.

My daughter's first competition is tomorrow morning!

We're having problems, too. I'm not sure they're ready but we're gonna go for it. We had "Showcase" for the families tonight. The Jr 2 team totally rocked it, but SR 3 dropped several stunts (my daughter is a crossover, on both). It is so sad to see the girls looking crushed. They are so hard on themselves when things don't go perfectly. We could use some prayers, too, please. I'm nervous for them.

Pray that I get the darn cheer hair on right, too! LOL I don't know what I'm doing with the stupid ponywig. It fell out after the second performance of the night. That CANNOT happen at competition!
