Our gym's tryouts are this weekend. I know my dd7 will most likely end up on the junior L2 team because I won't let her be on the Jr3 team as most of the girls are 11&12 and the coach is a bit (lots of sarcasm) of a yellerThey really want her on the L3 team but I just don't think it is a good fit for her at this age. She has her standing back tuck and is working on layouts, but I would rather have her compete at L2 & then work on her tumbling etc in separate tumble classes and privates. I don't want a year of screaming coaching and being with girls waaay older than her to turn her off.
I hear you.
We had tryouts in April and our teams were announced on Friday.
DD is on the special needs team (no tryouts for that) and DN ended up on the J1 team. Her tumbling is L3, as is her motions, but her stunting is not there yet. And she is a tall, skinny, all legs kid, so doesn't make a good base for the older teams.
She bumped around between the S2 team and the J1 team over the summer and it was ultimately decided to put her on the J1 team till she is more confident in her stunting. (We have absolutely no say in where our kids end up - that is all decided by the gym.)
Rather than being disappointed that she is on the J1 team, I am thrilled. I would much rather have her be successful and a leader on the J1 team rather than always worrying she would be letting the team down if she fell on her tick tock or other stunt. And she makes a great base for the littler ones now.
I asked her yesterday if she was disappointed that she is not going to be able to even do a back handspring and she said J1 is really fun. And that is the whole point right, to have fun while still being successful?
Now we are all on pins and needles waiting to hear where we will be traveling this year. We know we have two out-of-state competitions, but which ones they are is still not known.
Dallas or Cheersport will most likely be one of them, and lots of parents are hoping to go back to American Showcase in Anaheim. Our gym had a great competition there last season and many parents want to go again to see if we can do it again.
