2008 - C25K program :) WELCOME!!

Hey Kat!

So now, I jog at anywhere from 4.5 to 5. It is amazing to me the difference I feel between those speeds. I jogged for over 40 minutes at 4.5! And yet I can only do 5-7 minutes at 5?! I just never knew there was such a huge difference there. I wonder if I am normal in that regard?! It's just so surprising to me.

I think you're normal. I found the same thing. Up to to the 3 and 5 minute runs I was doing 5.5. It felt normal. I couldn't do it for anything longer - like had to stop couldn't. Now I'm doing W8 at 4.5. I do bump it up for the last five minutes (3 4.7 and final 2 at 5.0). At first it felt ridiculously slow, but now it feels right.

I read a long TR yesterday about the half marathon and while it was inspiring, it was also daunting. The task of walking/running 13.1 miles seems way to long right now...as I am struggling to do 3 in the right pace.

I, too, want to do the WDW Half in 2010. Do you have a link to the TR? I've been looking for them.

Ronda

DisneyDayTripper~OOps! Clearly I thought your MIL was a smidge older than ONLY 41!!:rotfl::rotfl: Ohhh, too funny! She is young!
The poor thing going through that with those awful kids...:sad2: That makes me mad.

Vicki~ Way to go!!! I knew you could do it. :thumbsup2 You've got it in you for the long haul.

Ronda~Thanks, I was hoping you'd chime in on that as I think I went through and am going through what you did.

Me~Week 6 complete!! :cool1: I did what I was hoping to do. I jogged at 4.8mph the entire time. And not only did I go for 25 minutes but I wanted to keep going for the whole 2.25 miles and that took me 28 min! I actually could have kept going too. But towards the end I began to feel a little muscle pull/pain on the outside and slightly above my right knee. I figured I'd better quit while I was ahead and not hurt myself. :)

But speaking of my little muscle pull...after I was done and doing my stretching I was trying to stretch it and couldn't figure out a way to stretch that particular muscle?! No matter how I moved my body I just couldn't get it to stretch right there. So I need to figure that out.

Hi Ronda!! Nice to "see" you over here!

Co - wow, if 41 is old, I am screwed!! I only have a few more years...

liz - congrats on the good workout!! :yay:

I have been walking at 4.0 and running at either 4.5 or 4.6. It feels, well, like running. Not hard, per se, but I don't really like it either.

I downloaded the podcast and at the 2nd time you run the 3 min and the guy is all calm-like, and we run now, I wanted to reach through and punch him!

Although, I was proud of myself for going, as I didn't leave work until 7:45 and had to go grocery shopping, I actually came home, put the groceries away (at 9PM), changed back into my workout clothes, and went and ran on the treadmill at the gym, and then came home and ate dinner (at about 9:45). Thankfully my gym is only 5 min from my house and open until midnight!

Hey guys, does this make sense? My neighbor and I went walking tonight. We did the 3.1 miles that I'm planning to use as my jogging route. Anyway, we did not jog at all, only walked, and it took us 46 minutes.

Per my calculations that's a pace of 15 min per mile, and an average speed of 4.04mph. Does that sound right? It just seems like for only walking the entire thing it would take longer than 46 minutes?? I know it takes 41m30s to jog 3.1 miles at 4.5mph.

I need a spreadsheet of all these equations/times and stuff I think. lol I like knowing how the numbers work and that they make sense.

Kat, you made me grin with your "...but I don't really like it either" comment. lol Too funny about wanting to punch the calm podcast guy too!
Way to go on heading to the gym at the end of your day!! I'm not sure I'd have it in me to do that! :)

Oh, and this is the program I used on my iPhone tonight: http://www.runkeeper.com/
It was not completely accurate. It said we went 2.95 miles, but according to the odometer on my dh's car it is actually 3.1. I wonder if there is anything more accurate?

Just finished Week 2!! Now the 3 minute runs next week are scareing me. How's everyone else doing?

Congrats on the accomplishment of finishing W2!! You'll be fine with the 3 min. runs. I remember how intimidated I was with those runs too but really once you start you'll be fine. I find that the first running interval's are always the hardest.

I finished W6D2 today! I am bored with the park I have been running in so I decided to go to a different park but instead of driving there I decided to run to it. Well, although I've lived here for 6 mos. I obviously don't get out much :rolleyes:and I got lost a couple of times but the good thing about getting lost was that the time went quicker than it normally does! The first time I looked at my watch I had already run for 7.5 min. and it didn't seem like I had been running that long! I guess having something else to focus on other than the breathing, knee/ankle aches, talking myself into not stopping, etc, really does help! The second 10 min. seemed longer because I had finally figured out where I was.

Happy Friday to everyone! :hippie:

Just finished Week 2!! Now the 3 minute runs next week are scareing me. How's everyone else doing?

I just started this week and decided to start with week 3 since my cardio is okay. I was really dreading the 3 min runs but they really weren't so bad. Although the 2nd one was a bit worse than the first... esp Wed when I was tired.

I am going to try to do day 3 tomorrow after a tour of Duke Gardens and a picnic lunch. It is supposed to be 75, sunny, and beautiful tomorrow, so I may try to do it outside in my n'hood. It's full-on spring here, flowering trees, leaves on trees, and pollen in full swing, though, so I may decide that the pollen will kill my allergies too much to attempt it. I'm going to see how the tour goes, since it is outside, and go from there.

Thanks Liz!! :goodvibes

I've finished W8. On to the grand finale! 30 minute runs. :scared:

Ronda

Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!

Congrats! :thumbsup2

I am totally in a rut. My schedule is totally off for working out and I just can't seem to get it together. :sad2:

Just finished Week 2!! Now the 3 minute runs next week are scareing me. How's everyone else doing?

I'm with you.. I just finished week two today and I'm really nervous about next week.. to the point where I'm thinking about another day or two of week two. During week 2, I was totally exhausted during the 3rd + 4th running intervals, and a little better by 5 + 6. It was still really tough though. How do I know if I've "graduated" to the next week? I've done all three runs but I don't want to move forward if my body can't handle it! Is there anything I can do on my "off" days to help?

Any help is much appreciated.

fall, I wish I could help. But I am such a newbie at this, I have no idea. :confused3

Maroo, sorry that you are having trouble fitting it in. I have to force myself to do anything. I use little tricks, like deliberately going into work dirty (I know, eww) so that I will go at lunch, if only so I can shower after. ;)

Congrats Ronda!!!

I actually just forced myself up off the couch to do W3D3. It is beautiful here, was about 75 today, so I tried my n'hood. It was a bit less boring, but well, I am still not sure about this whole running thing. Maybe I need a better podcast, because that calm guy just isn't doing it for me...

I also think this is the last day I will be doing outside. The pollen here has gotten awful, and once it is gone it will likely be too warm (and early mornings and I are FAR from friends).

Hi everyone! I'm just dropping in to introduce myself:goodvibes

I'm Marie, and believe it or not I finished C25K a couple of months ago. But then I stopped running, and now am starting Week 2 of a different learn to run program. I decided to start at the beginning again to reduce my chance of getting injured (I had bad IT band issues the first time I attempted C25K a year ago!)

Thanks for listening!

Marie :)

Happy Sunday!

This morning I did my workout outside for the first time ever! It was the perfect morning, so beautiful and just the right temp to be out there in shorts and a t-shirt. I planned to do the 3.1 miles in my neighborhood starting and ending at the end of my driveway.

Well, the first 1.5 miles or so I was a MESS. I started out by jogging too fast. I felt like it was the right speed, but then my heart was pounding and I was losing my breath. I looked at my iPhone and I was going over 6mph!! I had to stop jogging and walk to recover. I kept doing that and had a really hard time not jogging faster than 5mph. I just felt soooooo slow when I went below that. It was like I was barely moving across the pavement!! It was very different than being on the treadmill where I feel like I'm going faster. I did start to get the feel for it during the second 1.5 miles and was able to jog the rest of the way home. I really had to force myself to jog slower though. So my challenge when outside is going to be keeping my jog speed down. I'll just have to carry my iPhone with me and look at it a lot I guess.

I made it though and my final results were the 3.1 miles in 39m44s! :) Even though I was jogging too fast and then having to walk, my average speed was enough to get under 40m. So I was happy with that.

DisneyDayTripper~Thanks for the link to that Garmin. I'm thinking about getting one.

cwnhokie~Congrats on week2! Keep it up, you can do it!

Vicki~LOL You discovered the secret to success!! We need to get lost!

Kat~We live near Charlotte so we're with you on the full on spring! I have mild seasonal allergies so I'm ok enough out there. My 7 yr old son is MISERABLE right now though. :( He takes Singulair, Zyrtec, Nasonex, and has an Albuterol inhaler and he is STILL suffering. The yellow pollen is all over everything, yuck. It is beautiful out though!! :sunny:

Ronda! Woohoo, only 1 week left!!! :cool1:

Maroo~You can do it. Think of doing that half in WDW next year, you need to get yourself ready for it!

fall08CP~It would be totally fine for you to repeat this week if you need to. Or, if possible, you could slow down your jog speed and then move on.

Marie~Welcome! Congrats on completing the program already!! So what program are you doing this time?

Wow, you must be sooo proud of yourself!!!
Yes, it's so easy to take off too fast when you're outside. I have a GPS watch, so I don't overdo it! :goodvibes

Hello everyone!

Liz that is so awesome! I wish I had your problem of running too fast! :worship:

I finished W6D3 today! I was really, really dreading the 25min. run. DBF said he'd go with me and he really did help me get through it by distracting me with conversation...I was really whinning after running up a hill, it was a gradual up hill but at the time it felt like Mt. Everest! He kept telling me that once we got to the top would be flat all the way to the park that we were running to and that I would be able to catch my breath then. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to recover my breathing even, but he was right and amazingly breathing became easier and I even ran faster - I did not notice that I was running faster but he said that he noticed a big difference so I was happy with that! All in all it was not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be! Onward to no more run/walk intervals....

I hope everyone else is progressing at your own speed!!

Go job Vicki! I guess it really works!

You made great time Liz!

My friend and I did Week 3 Day 1 yesterday and I got mixed up and we jogged almost twice as much as we were supposed to. Some how I got it in my head that we were supposed to :
jog 90
walk 90,
jog 90
walk 90
jog 3 mins,
walk 3 mins,
jog 3 mins,
walk 3 mins.
It wasn't until after the second 3 min jog that she figured out what we were doing and corrected me, so then we did jog 90 walk 90 jog 3 walk 3 and the cool down. Oops and I was so dreading those 3 min jogs, our next work out should be a piece of cake now.
