2008-2009 Cheer Parent Thread!!!!

Do any of your daughters have ongoing knee problems? DD13 was a gymnast for 8 years before she started cheering. She complains of knee and wrist issues a lot (eg after tumbling class). Yesterday she started cross country - she's been so looking forward to it - and she said her knees killed her the whole time. I guess we should take her to a specialist, but I fear he'll just say she messed up her knees in gymnastics.

My DD has had pain in her knees after walking, running etc in the past. Is your DD wearing good running shoes? Mine has a problem with flat feet and she insists on walking around in flip flops, Uggs, Nfinitys etc.. just about every shoe that offers NO support for the feet. Not having that good support forced some of the tension up to the knee area. Now that she wears good shoes is is symptom free. I used to get so mad at her because she had the good shoes to use for running/long distance walking but she didn't like the way they "looked" :rolleyes1 She would try to run with her Infinity's on! :scared1: Follow up with a specialist for sure but I figured I would check in on the shoes to see if I could help. Good Luck! :goodvibes

Well.............we are back from our visit to HPU. We are EXHAUSTED to say the least.

The flight is super long from Boston. Going to HPU was not so tiring as we were excited to get to Hawaii and take it all in. However, coming home was horrible. DD was fine until we got on the flight from Phoenix to Honolulu. The woman sitting next to her was filling her head with both good and bad about Hawaii (which was fine) but then started talking about the distance, being over water for over 5 hours, "island fever" etc. WEll.................with this DD started getting anxious!! Sweaty palms etc. She was handling it fine on the way to Hawaii.

Then there, although busy seeing the island, touring the dorms and off campus housing, attending a volleyball game to see the cheerleaders perform, attending a cheer practice, and touring the school and of course, the island...........DD kept saying "We are in the middle of no where". She had that 'island fever' idea in her mind. She loved the school and of course the cheer team (who were very nice and talked with her and the coach seems like a great guy in the short time we got to speak).

Well............the flight home was horrible!!! She could not sleep despite leaving at midnight (Hawaii time) and we had been up and out of the hotel at 7 AM that morning. About 1.5 hours into the flight I gave her 2 over the counter sleeping pills and then about 1 hour after that, 2 motrin (her back was sore, middle seat!!). She did not sleep...............then she was awake from Phoenix to Boston as well.

And then, to top it all off..........had to go to Celebrity practice right from the airport!!! I was happy that one of her bases were missing (normally I am not) so she could not stunt. She did the routine full out a few times then all of a sudden, her double fulls were singles, then layouts, then tucks then NOTHING!! LOL!! At one point they started the routine from the beginning and she was literally just dazed!!! Did not move and they had to restart. It was funny (to me anyways).

WE are wiped out today................but all in all a good visit. She likes the school alot and the only thing that would keep her from going (besides if she did not make the team) was the flight................she asked about cruisng there??!! LOL!!

If you want any particulars on HPU, I will try to answer...........

Was there a special event this past weekend for those interested? A girl/coach from my gym went to Hawaii this past weekend as well to check out HPU. I was just curious what the approx number of kids that try out for their teams are. In one way I think the number must be huge and in another I wonder if the distance is a factor. I feel for your DD about the distance. I think that would be intimidating being so far from home but if it's what she wants I think it would be an amazing experience! I would love to hear more of your thoughts about the campus since I might be in the same position in a few years.

Well.............we are back from our visit to HPU. We are EXHAUSTED to say the least.

Welcome back! I am glad it went well for the most part.

Choosing a college is such a big decision for seniors. We have a DS who is a freshman this year at CU. Although it is only 10 minutes away from home, he worried about many of the same things your daughter is worrying about. He worried about his girlfriend and most of all his friends that were all dispersing across the country.

I hope your daughter can put the negative lady's comments in perspective. She was probably just jealous that your daughter might get to live in such a beautiful place :teeth:

There wasn't anything special going on as far as I knew. DD had tuesday off from school so she only missed 2 days. That is why we decided to go then. We toured with a mom and her son from Nebraska. He plays tennis but now sure if he wants to in college.

The HPU coach told me that last year he viewed/had try out 184 cheerleaders for only 78 (or may have been 74) spots. He then holds like another tryout to see who will compete at Nationals. NOt all the cheerleaders compete at Nationals!!! That was a little discouraging since they only compete once and only cheer for volleyball and basketball!! He will pick 20 for the sm coed team and not sure about the large. Possibly 20 as well, that may be what they can compete with I am not sure and I don't recall him mentioning how many will compete for the lg coed team. He did mention that he would have 4 (male)tumblers for the lg coed team and possibly (I honestly forget) 7-10 stunters. He said the girls on the sm coed team all have fulls, however, not all the girls on the lg coed team do.

WE compete in a little less than a month. We have added practices but it is so difficult to get full team practices since most of the team also cheer high school and this is competition season for high school. DD's high school team competes tomorrow and I highly doubt they will move on. She has a few conflicts with allstars and high school practices coming up but is choosing her allstar team. She has to miss 1 allstar for her pep rally and 1 for her winer ball but she will be at the rest. She hates to miss practice as she feels she is letting down the team.

Congratulations!!!! :cool1: :cool1:
The teams thank you!

They have worked so hard and it was a nice reward to do so well in their first competition of the year. It will be a fun season as from all indications yesterday, the competition is going to be really tough.

Sitting there in the stands, it always amazes me what tremendous athletes these young people are (all the teams - not just ours).

Next up WSA Nationals on 12/13 and 12/14.

After my DD got her RO BHS Tuck, she is having a mental block! :headache: We are going to do try a couple of private lessons to see if that will help her with her block.

We have a competition in 2 weekends in Baton Rouge. We are really excited. They have done some major changes to their routine to bring their starting points up, they have some pretty complicated stunts now.

Good luck to your daughter and her team!

Thank you! They got first place . . . but they were the only Y3 team there. Had to beat a score, I guess. My DD landed her tuck - she just got it a couple of weeks ago. The team did not hit 2 of their stunts, but it wasn't bad the first time out.

Congrats to your dd and her tuck - awesome!!

I just "found" this thread...dd's on a youth level 2 in Indy, but she's out - she broke her arm tumbling 4 weeks ago. :( Broke both bones in her forearm, it was NASTY. Dr. said no cartwheels for 3 months after the incident...that puts us more than 1/2 way through the season.

I saw that some of your dd's got the gifts from the competitions when they couldn't compete - what about the girl who subbed? I thought she would get them. We of course have still paid the comp fees. I would love if dd could get them just because they are important to her.

Our next competition is in Dec, WSF 2 day nationals in Indy. Rosemary - you'll be there too right? Maybe we could meet up...

I like some of the team building things. We were Youth level 1 last year and our team was awesome...this year at YL2 - not so much. They're not clicking, and the team is still primarily the same girls. New stunt groups though. I really think team building would help tremendously.

I'll be there Jennifer. This year only one of our teams is going and because it is a senior team, not many parents go!!! Our VIP section will be weak!!! I am staying at the Marriott. I'd love to meet up with you..........and anyone else heading to Indy!!!

'Nother proud mom here. My dd is now 10, cheering for 4 years now. Last year was her 1st All-Star team (rec. before this). This was her last year of rec, we'll be continuing with our team for full season this year, let's go NJ Spirit Explosion!!

Rosemary - that'll be great! Another Diser's dd is on the squad too (diser's daughter that sounds like a tongue twister!). He'll be at Mouse Fest but his DW will be there. Don't know if you go to the unplugged board, he's on there a lot...ADP. Maybe we can add to your VIP section.:cheer2:

What level is your senior squad?
