2008-2009 Cheer Parent Thread!!!!

The other bothersome thing is that both in middle and high school, the drill team is highly disciplined and well behaved, and the cheerleaders are undisciplined and pretty much have to commit a crime to be kicked off the squad.

I see your from "north Texas".............even if the cheerleaders commit a crime, they still get to cheer in Texas!!! ONLY KIDDING!! Some (a minority) Texas cheerleaders (both high school and allstar) have given the sport a bad rap!!!

There are so many allstar teams in Texas that maybe she should just do competitive cheer year round. MOst allstar teams have discipline. IF she is bored with middle school cheer and really loves it then try allstar. My DD did pop warner for a year, was bored and then began allstar cheer (this was in 4th grade now she is a senior in high school). She has been doing allstars since grade 5!!! She loves it and really hopes to make a college team!! She loves working the routine but more importantly performing it. It keeps her physically fit as well..........

She does high school cheer but only for the school spirit. She is the captain this year. They cheer at football and soccer games and they compete (in a few weeks). Her high school is a relatively weak cheer squad and have never made it to states!!! I would love for her team to make it to states her senior year (and a first for the school) but I will be happy if they make it past leagues to regionals!!! She has fun with high school cheer but LOVES allstar!!

Good luck to your DD!!

Glad to have found this thread!

Both of my DDs are in comp cheer through the town (not All-Star even though one was asked but since she does dance comp it would way too much :) ) and we had our first comp this past Sunday. Both teams came in 2nd out of 7 teams competing in their category.

Now on to this coming weekend when we have a comp each day and I'm getting ready for the early morning and battling putting the hair piece it :rotfl:

Congrats to your DD for gettng her RO BHS tuck!!! Before you know it she will be throwing those fulls!!!

Hey, at least they got out there and competed. Worked out the kinks and will be ready for their next comp. Teams usually don't 'peak' sometime until around late Jan/early Feb!! (so I am told!!)........Routines change all the time based on judges opinions and the scoresheet.

I wish we could hit the floor before Indy!!!

Thanks she was so happy!!! I kinda bribed her to get it :rolleyes1 ...I promised her a Jonas Brothers poster, but hey she pulled it and I was so proud!

Compared to what they looked like just a few days before the comp. we were so excited. This is her first year to be a flyer, so she is still working those kinks out. I bet the coach will be adding more advanced stuff to get our starting points higher.

Oh, and Shreveport is cancelled, so we won't compete again until the first part of December. Plenty of time to work on the kinks!

Hello! I just found this forum, and you all might be able to help me. (I used to look for answers on prox, but that just disappeared....I have no idea what happened to that forum.)

My daughter (all star youth 2) injured her growth plates in her ankles from overuse. (I suspect too many back tuck lessons and classes each week! Now I know better than to let her do so much!) Now, a week before the comp, the orthopedic has put both of her feet in boots and she is unable to do anything for 4 weeks. What happens to the comp fee that we paid now that she cannot compete? Do we just forfeit it, or do we ask the gym for a refund?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi,
sorry to hear about your daughter's injury. I have my own, (Sr 4) in a boot these days as well!:rolleyes1 It really depends on your gym.. each one has it's own policy. It's best to ask your gym what they do. Sometimes you just loose it. For others it depends on if they have paid the comp company yet and if they have not, hopefully they can credit you for future use. Good luck! oh and the "new prox" board site is...http://imissthexboards.forumotion.net/index.htm

lots of the same people that used to be on the x board. Hope this helps and I hope your daughter heals quickly! :wizard:

My DD injured her ankle pretty bad last year. I had already paid her comp fees and she was not able to compete for most of the season. However, the gym did not make me pay the monthly tuition because DD just sat and watched practice. She also went to all the comps and supported her team. She stayed backstage with them and sat with the coaches when her team competed. She also got a jacket/sweatshirt or whatever else the team got when they won.

Thanks for the info regarding your experiences. I will be interested to see how our gym owners respond. They recently bought the gym and the "family atmosphere" of the original gym is gone; it's all business now. So, I don't have high hopes that they are going to be terribly compassionate about this. Luckily, my daughter is too young to notice, but it doesn't escape me. How sad...and the season is only starting.

wow, your gym is super nice! My DD was out sick last year for most of the season too. They were great as well. I did not pay monthly tuition or comp/coaches fees. This was great because my old program was one of the m most expensive in our state! This year I don't know how it works at my new gym. I'm sure they would stop tuition if needed but we pay our comp fees in a few installments long before the season begins. we also pay NO coaches fees. I would guess that the money put into the team account for comp fees would also cover the coaches expenses and it all has to come from somewhere so it may come from the unused comp fees. That's just my guess. That was also nice that your child got the jacket/sweatshirt etc.. from their team while they were out! I guess because you paid the fees they kept you on the roster that way. It must have been nice for your DD to get the jacket to make her still feel part of the team. I love that! :woohoo:

Yes, we too, pay our comp fees/coaches fees in installments prior to the first competition. DD was injured in January having only competed once (where she got a Worlds bid so that was great) and then not again until 2 weeks before Worlds. She was not 100% and was not able to fully tumble but they put her back in the routine and let her do what she was capable of doing. Yes, they are super nice and DD loves it there. This is her last year and we are praying for an injury free year (last year was the first time she was out due to injury in 7 years so that was really not bad considering the risk in this sport).

I am getting excited for the season to really begin...........

It depends on your gym's policy. At our gym we sign a LENGTHY contract at the beginning of the season that outlines everything. We are not refunded comp fees for an injury if the fees have already been sent into the company.

Our next competition is about 1 month away. We are getting really excited. They have changed up some of the stunting and it looks really great! We even have a coach that is offering to give an extra practice each week for free because he is so excited about our squad.

We may be in Dallas afterall!

Hi everyone!
I just wanted to say hi! I'm subbing!
I am a former cheer coach of 10 years. I am planning on starting up a cheer team when my dd gets into high school. I've already volunteered to help out the middle school dance team for the next 3 years (starting next year) I just can't wait to get back to it!

Cheers and kicks to all! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

5Slays.......we just got our added practice schedule!! Our gym kick off and team dinner just happens to be the night of DD's Winter Ball (for which her gown is already bought!!!). She is going to tell her coach she will not be able to make the gym kick off. Seeing as this is her last Winter Ball, I want her to be able to go to it. I think her coach will understand although she may not be happy about it. Maybe we will meet in Dallas!!

I am leaving tomorrow morning bright and early to take DD to look at Hawaii Pacific University. She has had her heart set on going there since she saw some of them at a comp (stunt group) quite a few years back. She wants to go but the distance (and the boyfriend) is making her think twice. So, off we go to Hawaii tomorrow for the weekend (yes, we are crazy). I jsut feel she can make a better decision once she see's the campus and see the teams!!!

I really hope we get to go to Dallas. That would be so exciting for the kids, especially since we are the youth level 2 squad and we have a junior level 5 that is not really up to snuff.

Funny you mention Hawaii Pacific...The coach I mentioned used to be at Top Gun, then he was at Hawaii Pacific. He can tumble like no one's business!

OMG! HPU!!!! What an amazing opportunity My DD is only a freshman but she has had her eye on HPU since she was in 5th grade! DON"T LET THAT BOYFRIEND INFLUENCE HER!! :lmao: She has worked so hard all these years and I just know if she has been on a Celebrity team she is AMAZING!:goodvibes Good Luck to you and have a safe trip! Tell us all about it when you get home! I spend a lot of time watching youtubes of HPU and their campus online. I can't wait to hear about your experience. :goodvibes

Well.............we are back from our visit to HPU. We are EXHAUSTED to say the least.

The flight is super long from Boston. Going to HPU was not so tiring as we were excited to get to Hawaii and take it all in. However, coming home was horrible. DD was fine until we got on the flight from Phoenix to Honolulu. The woman sitting next to her was filling her head with both good and bad about Hawaii (which was fine) but then started talking about the distance, being over water for over 5 hours, "island fever" etc. WEll.................with this DD started getting anxious!! Sweaty palms etc. She was handling it fine on the way to Hawaii.

Then there, although busy seeing the island, touring the dorms and off campus housing, attending a volleyball game to see the cheerleaders perform, attending a cheer practice, and touring the school and of course, the island...........DD kept saying "We are in the middle of no where". She had that 'island fever' idea in her mind. She loved the school and of course the cheer team (who were very nice and talked with her and the coach seems like a great guy in the short time we got to speak).

Well............the flight home was horrible!!! She could not sleep despite leaving at midnight (Hawaii time) and we had been up and out of the hotel at 7 AM that morning. About 1.5 hours into the flight I gave her 2 over the counter sleeping pills and then about 1 hour after that, 2 motrin (her back was sore, middle seat!!). She did not sleep...............then she was awake from Phoenix to Boston as well.

And then, to top it all off..........had to go to Celebrity practice right from the airport!!! I was happy that one of her bases were missing (normally I am not) so she could not stunt. She did the routine full out a few times then all of a sudden, her double fulls were singles, then layouts, then tucks then NOTHING!! LOL!! At one point they started the routine from the beginning and she was literally just dazed!!! Did not move and they had to restart. It was funny (to me anyways).

WE are wiped out today................but all in all a good visit. She likes the school alot and the only thing that would keep her from going (besides if she did not make the team) was the flight................she asked about cruisng there??!! LOL!!

If you want any particulars on HPU, I will try to answer...........

It's such a shame that someone put bad vibes into her mind. I hope that does not impact her decision. Sure it is far, but let's face it - as an adult, it will be an opportunity that she will regret not taking advantage of! I can't imagine have to look back and think would of, could, of, etc . . .

Maybe Hawaii isn't for everyone, but I can't imagine that being the case for a young college student with a talent, passion, and opportunity to do what she loves in paradise!

I wish your daughter the best in deciding what is best for HER - not the woman sitting next to her on the plane (or the quickly approaching 40 year old married woman with two kids and a full time job who is typing this!)

Do any of your daughters have ongoing knee problems? DD13 was a gymnast for 8 years before she started cheering. She complains of knee and wrist issues a lot (eg after tumbling class). Yesterday she started cross country - she's been so looking forward to it - and she said her knees killed her the whole time. I guess we should take her to a specialist, but I fear he'll just say she messed up her knees in gymnastics.

My DD does not complain about her knees or wrists. However, she has only been really tumbling for about 2 years and *thankfully* she has not had a bad fall.

there are always a few girls with knee braces at competition. I would definitely see an orthopedist.
