2008-2009 Cheer Parent Thread!!!!

So let me understand what you are saying:

At WWOS you can buy an entry to WWOS to get into the competition? or do you mean just to get into WWOS and you already had competition tickets.

What my travel agent told me was that she talked to someone (i can't remember who) who said that unless your stay is booked through the group (UCA) you cannot gain entry into the competition.

That is not how it worked last year. I bought general tickets to WWOS right out front. They took the tickets at the gates to WWOS and then we went over to the Milk House. There were no separate competition tickets.

The parkhoppers that our cheerleaders had through UCA, and the parent/spectator parkhoppers also just had WWOS entry on them - no separate entry tickets into the Milk House.

As mentioned above, the tickets were $25.00 each.

When I attended Worlds the past few years, I only had to pay the $25 to get into the Milkhouse. That ticket got me through the turnstyle at WWOS without having to purchase a WWOS ticket.

I do not go on the package at Worlds as we are DVC members and have park hoppers already. In the past, DD has been lucky to win a PAID bid to Worlds so all her ticketing and housing is paid for..........fingers crossed to change that AT Large bid to PAID!!

Welcome KSchwaggs..........maybe you can give us Cheer Mom' some insgiht into what our little cheer princesses (princes) are going through!!! I know DD is very quiet on the day of competition and I stay clear and far away now that she is older!!!

You are right now that my memory is refreshed. When we were at UCA, we bought tickets to the Milk House, not general WWOS, out front at WWOS. They did take the tickets at the turnstile and then there was no other checking of tickets at the competition. It makes sense that you have to buy tickets to the particular place you were going to because when we were there, there was a MLB baseball preseason game going, a huge lacrosse competition and UCA Nationals - it was a zoo! You specified which tickets you wanted at the window. But the tickets were taken at the entrance to WWOS, not the Milk House.

Welcome to everyone who is just finding us!!! We are glad to have you here!

My DD's gym rules are pretty lax, but the coach is not, so that causes some tension. And it is incredibly irritating when the entire squad doesn't show up, so you can practice all of the stunts together.

As for our new routine, it looks awesome so far!!! We have stuff going on all over the place! So hopefully at the competition in January we will get bids to the All Levels!

I know when we were at Worlds and bought the ticket to the Milkhouse, there was also a softball tournament and basketball tournament going on. I wonder, now, if admission to those events was the same?? Hmmmmmmm.......got me thinking!! LOL!! They did not check tickets at the Milkhouse last year when you entered but they did the year before!!

We have been the last 3 years to UCA Nationals in March. You will need to buy a ticket to the Milk House to see the competition if you are competing there. If you are not on the UCA pkg. then you can purchase special park hoppers through the Varsity link. It is under UCA All star and extra tickets. I don't know if I am allowed to post the link here or not but those tickets are available this year. This is for extra family members who are not on the UCA package. If your daughter is a level 1 or level 2, they will most likely compete in Hollywood Studios at least one of the 2 days possibly both days. Last year the youth 2 teams competed in the park both days and never were at WWOS. If you have any questions don't hesitite to ask. ;)

thanks so much! So, at the Indiana Jones thing, where they'll probably be performing at least once, do they check competition tickets at the entrance to the show or what? or do you not even have to buy comp tickets for that particular location?

my dad and step mom are trying to go at the same time and they're going on the buy 4 get 3 free special and do not want to travel through UCA.

everyone here has been so helpful! thank you all so much!

fitmama..........your theme park admission ticket will entitle you to view the competition without incurring another expense for a comp ticket!! Most people don't like this as they do not spend much time in the theme parks. They only want to see their child compete and they have to pay admission to the theme park.

Hopefully, once the new WWoS convention center is open............ALL cheer teams will be allowed to compete at this venue without having it spread out all over Disney.

Sorry for the long post but I need some advise from other cheer moms! My DD has "lost" her backhandspring. I put lost in quotes because she really hasn't she is just playing around to get attention-I know it and her coach knows it.

When it comes down to make or break time with the coach, she will do it. For instance one time at tumbling practice he told her if she didn't pull it without a spot, then she needed to get out of this class and go to a lower level class. Well she pulled it right then and there.

So, we have been dealing with this issue for about 2 months now and I told her about a month ago, that if she didn't start pulling it again, then she was going to have to quit cheer. I gave her a Jan. 1 deadline. Well, Jan 1 is tomorrow and she is still playing around. She has a private lesson today but other than that I am seriously thinking of pulling her out. Normally I am not the type to let my kids quit in the middle of a season, but the coach even said that he was going to take her out of the routine if she didn't do right.

So...what should I do, give her this one last chance or let her continue to do stay on the squad until the end of the season? I feel like she is hurting the team by playing around and that is 1 less child on the squad who is not throwing her tumbling.

Oh, and FWIW, she has been doing her backhandspring for almost 2 years now.

Wow - tough situation! I think I would talk to her coach and let that be the final decision, and tell dd that I was planning to pull her but decided to talk to the coach b/c it's a team sport and that way the coach can decide what's best for the squad (just coming up with something so that you justify not pulling her when you told her you would ;) ) Personally though I would leave it to the coach.

I understand your frustration! Maybe the coach telling her she can't be on the squad will motivate her.

I have heard that after growth spurts kids sometimes have problems w/their tumbling...don't know if that's the case or if like you said it's just attention getting. Good luck!!

Thanks! I know that she really loves cheer but she is driving me crazy with this! Oh, and to top it off, she wants to do her back tuck but skip the backhandspring!!! :headache: So I don't think it is a growth issue, it is just attention seeking behavior!!!!

Hi,
wow, yes tough situation.. kudos to you as a parent to see through it all and call it for what it is. :goodvibes I have been on the sidelines and seen this type of thing many a times but it's allowed to go on and on and can be a downfall for a team.. a kind of.. "why is little suzy allowed to goof around and not the rest of us?" I agree, let the coach decide. If your daughter is very valuable in other areas then they may need her for more than just that tumbling. I do think it's a maturity thing when it comes to wanting to "skip" over doing certain things to get to the tuck, etc.. Hopefully, she will snap out of it and understand that there are prices to be paid if you want to do what you love. Once again I really commend you as a parent for being aware of this and being on top of it. It's not easy at all. I wish you and your daughter all the best in the future and I hope she's out on that floor with her team!

Thanks so much for that!!! Sometimes I feel like the bad mom, but to be honest, this is not a cheap sport for her to be playing around!

Hi, I noticed in your signature that she is only 8 years old. Are you sure its for attention and not the fear? The fear of backwards tumbling should never be underestimated.

She just turned 9 on Monday. Normally I would agree with you about her being scared bit she has been doing it for almost 2 years. The coach and I talked about it and she is going to be put in a beginner tumbling class to try and put a fire under her.

I have seen kids with bhs for years "lose" theirs suddenly. One year at a gym, I saw a pre-teen lose hers. For some reason she was afraid. It does happen. I wouldn't rule it out.

I have seen kids lose skills as well. But, as her mom, you do know if she is trying to gain attention or not.

Placing her in a beginner level tumbling class sounds good. If she is fearful of the bhs, then that will help to gain her confidence again. If she is just playing head games, then this may help to make her realize that this is not a fun joke to be playing.

I have heard of some parents taking their kids to sports psychologists when they lose skills!?!?! Some a little over the top to me, but they say it works. At our old gym, a girl was hypnotized due to her "mental" block. I can't recall the outcome as it was years ago.

The sport is toooo expensive to be playing games (if that is the case).

Did you talk to the coach and let him/her know you wanted to pull her if she continued to performing her skills? I hope the coach is somewhat sensitive to this issue. My DD's old coach was very degrading and if she couldn't perform a skill really laid into her with degrading remarks. It truly made her feel inadequate in all aspects of life (not just cheer). Glad to say, we are not longer at the gym and DD's new gym is nothing like that at all.

Good luck and keep us informed..............

Anyone going to Spirit Sports in Worcester MA and Athletic in Providence RI this month????

Hi everyone,
I found this thread from Jen on the Wishboards (Thanks Jen!).

My daughter has been cheering since she was in 1st grade. She is now a Junior in HS and This is her 3rd year on the Varsity Competition squad. They are competing at the AmeriCheer Nationals at Disney in March.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Welcome Melanie. This is a great bunch of parents who love and support not only their cheer children but others here on the board.

Now that the new year is upon us so is another cheer season!! The comps should be happening almost weekly now..........keep us updated and most importantly............have fun and stay injury free!!!
