Apr 17, 2005 — MIAMI (Reuters) - A freak wave some 70 feet high smashed into a cruise liner as the vessel returned to New York from the Bahamas, slightly injuring four passengers and flooding 62 cabins, the ship's owners said on Sunday.

Norwegian Cruise Line, part of the Malaysian Genting Group's Star Cruises Ltd ., said the wave shattered two windows on the Norwegian Dawn at daybreak on Saturday off the Florida coast.

This is the third time in around three months that this has happened. Twin ships from the former Royal Olympic line got smacked. I would have been scared to death.

In 1996 we were on a cruise to Nassau when the ship tilted some 45 degrees. Everything went flying -- people, dishes, glasses. Those in lower "cabins" got a underwater view. I can't imagine what a 70 foot wave must do to the ship. Bring on the scotch at that point. What? This happened in the early morning? I DON'T CARE! And get me the h*** off the ship.

Yes, I agree- I REALLY don't think people need extra vaccinations as we are really going to only be in Mexico for a few hours. As long as everyone follow the golden rules of travelling outside in the US- they should be fine.

I don't even think marlaria will be an issue- as we are travelling in May. I HAVE taken Marlaria meds (once again for my trip to Indonesia) and they have some strange side effects- REALLY FUNKY dreams. I had heard it could happen and it happened to me. (maybe psychosomatic?)

If someone going on our cruise was immunosuppressed due to chemotherapy, HIV/AIDS, etc I would recommend they have their vaccinations in place. Besides many people from the western states may already be immunized against Hepatitis A- as it is recommended in those areas due to the high prevelance of migrant workers.


And yes- I believe you are correct with the foot thing. Even if you have your tetanus shots current- if you step on something you usually get a booster shot for good measure.

(I would also bet they have those on the ship....as they have full life support in place and remote monitoring for critical patients. I have heard they are able to stabilize most patients and keep them until they reach a port verses being flighted out by copter. {can you imagine that bill?})


When I travel, I usually bring powdered electrolyte solutions as there have been GI bugs causing problems on cruises....

AND it's the season for Rotovirus----all you parents of young children ever wonder why every spring MANY children are sick with stomach problems- this is why. (Pediatrics has been full for two weeks with dehydrated kids due to this...really bad this year up here.)


So for those wondering about vaccinations- there you have it from a doctor and a nurse.....

Enough medicine.....I think I need a vacation!

We're not planning to get any particular extra immunizations. Probably should get an update on the tetanus. We don't plan on doing any excursions away from the metropolitan areas. I suspect that other doctors are not pushing the shots either. I forgot to ask my infectious disease friend the other day when I spoke to her. I had an emergent foot infection that needed addressed. The state board of health here gives the standard line of possible hep A, tetanus, and the possibility of malaria. Malaria wasn't big on the list. The meds can be troublesome. Even doxycycline leads to sun sensitivity. The others are noted for dizziness. I had a patient recently with this.

I'm thinking Scott and Lynn will need to get going first---they've gotta trek over the mountains! We just have to roll downhill to Denver, and Linda has an aero port right in her backyard!!! Those darned flying contraptions aren't here to stay! Just a fad!!!

I REALLY hate to admit this in public---when all those cruises last summer were diverted and had to be extended- all I could think about how great that would be- to be kept on longer and then to get a 50% discount on your next cruise- HOW could you be mad?

Hi Celeste! Funny you should mention this. I just finished printing out labels for the bags I got. At least I printed for all of those that have stateroom numbers on the master list. I had something special made, and they sell them only in lots of 100. I got 100 thinking one for each stateroom, but we have so many new people that I am now just getting ready to order something else to fill in. I am doing one per stateroom, with the exception of those that are traveling with someone not in their family. I hope to pass them out at the sailaway, (if my box is delivered to my room in time) then whoever's is left, I will deliver to their fish. Personally, I think the sailaways will be too chaotic to attempt this, but we shall see.

yes, we, Cash and I, will, with help, will probably do that. Otherwise, we'll be visiting fish and door handles...It's a long cruise...Those who are opting for a more prolonged handout will have more time for fun at the sailaway parties....Pirate booty sounds SOOO appropriate!

Attire, = There will be two (2) formal and two (2) semi formal evenings. There will be one (1) pirate(1)tropical nights. I guess that leaves nine (9) "cruise casual" nights were jeans are allowed in the dining rooms (don't even get me started!)

Food = There are plans to introduce new lunch and dinner menus so that no menu will be repeated during the course of the sailing.

Entertainment = A new production show to be offered. Called " Twice Charmed ". Cinderella themed Stage Show.

Donald Ducky Williams, will be onboard and we will recieve 2 Lithographs
1 for going on the cruise and one for going thru the canal.
This has been said on other cruises by DDW .

Canal Party = All seas travel, is hosting a party in the Roy Suite the day of the Canal crossing . for its customers. You can do better than that..

Return Cruisers Gift = It is rumored that there is a new gift not a beach towel as on past Cruise's.

Well... I'm glad things slowed down a little... my head was swirling with all the pages I had to catch up on!
We are now booked on the Bounty Adventure for Curacao! Funny.. .all three excursions we are doing on this cruise so far are not thru DCL... Quite adventurous for us in itself! Our DCL adventure will be the pin lines...
Hope we have lots of doc dancing going on tomorrow.... the suspense will be driving me nuts until I get home around 7pm.....

I think the scrapbook thing is in April and October. I'll have to find my stuff and see when the next one is. It was as the new convention center/exhibit hall out in Sandy. I think it is called the South Towne Expo or something like that.

The aero port is 20 miles from my house, only because we live on the east bench right at the mouth of Big Cottonwood cabin. However, I can see the aero planes flying in and out when it is clear, which is for the most part all the time!
