We were talking about that earlier. Why not have plywood cut to your window and door size out in your back shed? May not need it every year, but at least you've got it and it's cut to size already. Easy to put up.

What's wrong with the puppy? That doesn't sound right.

Who knows. Ate too much food? Dying of Parvo? Malrotation of the intestine? Anorexia? Bulimia? Sakes alive, I have no idea but I would just LOVE an evening when I could put the kids to bed, kick back and cross stitch while I watched a stupid chic flick.

(sigh) here I was just starting to settle in and actually like having her around. Now I'm back to constant care.

Nice talking to everyone at chat tonight. Quite a turnout!

No birthday dinner for Pam. She's at the coast and I'm at home.

Well, that just figures. I finally get back here, and everyone has gone to bed.
After I got back from the store, where, by the way...they had already put all of my stuff back on the shelves! I had to go get it all again (all dry goods, so it's not like it would rot if they left it up front for me) and I was not a happy person. Had a small discussion with the manager. I was very polite, but I told her that
it wouldn't hurt them to leave it out for at least two hours! I think they figured I wouldn't come back, and they made $30. Errgghh.

Anyway, so DH & DS went to the game, and I decided I should call my Mom. It had been a while.
So here I am...all alone.

Diana,
Thanks for finding that thread about the leg "rash". I knew mine wasn't from the sun...it has happened at Disneyland, in the winter.
It is exactly like the edema-type thing they mention. The "Old Lady" syndrome. I had already figured that was what it was. Little broken capillaries......but my doc didn't think it was "no big deal".....he wanted to know if it continued.
I did get it this last time at WDW, but it was very minimal.
Sooo...back to the diet and gym for me. I want to be semi-fit for the cruise (and life) if nothing else. I'll never be a skinny-mini (like that Dancin' lady in the picture) but at least I can be healthier.
Love that picture!
I can't stand to look at old pics of myself. I used to be what they would now call "hot". Then I had three kids. Maybe if I hadn't been "hot", I wouldn't have had three kids!
Now I just have Old Lady Leg Syndrome. Ah, well......

This is what I was thinking about earlier today. (My profound thought)
When I mentioned my major in college I started thinking about one little girl that I worked with privately for two years. Her name was/is Christine. She had multiple physical disabilities, but she was sharp as a tack.
I helped with her in her home, and took her to the pool for swim lessons. She was 7 & 8 those years. She had no use of her arms at all, except at the shoulder. She could swing her arms if she did it from the shoulder. She could move her feet and ankles and her knees bent to some extent, but that was all. Her legs stuck straight out at the sides.
Part of what amazed me was her amazing attitude. She was sunshine in a dress.
But I guess something that I had never thought about all these years, until this morning, was the amount of courage her parents had. I was only 18 & 19 when I worked with Christine. I had a brand new Camaro, and when I think of the amount of courage it must have taken for her parents to watch me carry their precious baby out to my car, strap her in, and drive away, I am totally blown away.
I never thought about it before, but now that I'm a Mom, I don't like my kids to get in a car with anyone other than Jay & I.
But they trusted me. And they knew that I was going to go put her in a swimming pool, where, if I let her go, she couldn't have saved herself.
I wish that I knew where they were, because I would love to call Christine's mom and dad and thank them for having the courage it takes to let go like that, and to trust me the way they did.

I'd be there if I could.

You know, there's something I'm curious about. Now I know that hurricanes like the last two are not a every year occurrence, but why to people in those areas not have some sort of permanent, or at least, semi-permanent window/door protection on their houses?

Been hearing about the 3-4 hour wait to buy plywood at the Home Depot and Lowe's. That's crazy stuff.....

There are a few people who have the roll up hurricane shutters, but that's not many and than it is mainly on beach side. We are about 6 miles inland and there are only two in our neighborhood that have shutters.

The window film is starting to show up and is a great idea. I have been looking at it and this might be the push to get it done.

A lot of people board up, but what a pain. We did for Floyd which was over 5 years ago. We bought the wood, cut it, and mounted it all. Even evacuated because it was coming right at us.

Nothing happened. It turned at the last minute.

This Spring I re-did DD room and made her a platform bed. 3.5 ft in the air, double bed. Great bed and it a lot of wood because we included storage. We call it the "Hurricane Bed". Guess why? I used all our hurricane wood for it. It had been sitting the garage for all those years and only used it the one time.

Just a little wind this morning and no rain yet. They say be prepared for 15-20 inches of rain over the next 24 -48 hours.

We will be around all day just waiting. The kids are concerned because I'm thinking of cleaning the garage until the storm comes. What a way to spend a holiday weekend.

Most people live in a house less than 7 years before moving or it is a brand new house and they have not gone though a storm yet so they have not gone through the process yet.

Besides, don't you remeber the 2000 Presidential Election. We have a tough time figuring things out here is Flori-DAH. (Just kidding to all the other Florida posters).

Good morning Cruisers!
We sail in 15 weeks!

Another week closer to cruising!

Had a great time in chat last night! Lots of holiday cruisers! I think at one time we had over 20 poeple in chat and over half of that was our group! We definately need to set up a day/date/time for a holiday cruise chat - that will be a blast.

Well off to read the boards - then grocery shopping.

Have a great day everyone!

The plywood stuff makes sense.

I love this comment. Love that you can jab at yourself! I am 1/4 Polish and some of my favorite jokes are "Polack jokes." They crack me up! I know they aren't true, but if you can't poke fun at yourself, who can you poke fun at??

Thought I'd let you know. Puppy is NOT dying. She has done a 180 and appears absolutely fine now. I went to bed around 11, dh stayed up with her. Said around 1:00 she just went nuts....playful, crazy, running like a mad dog. Slept from 1-6:30 and is now up and crazy again. Must be hungry b/c she keeps trying to take a chunk out of my leg.

Off to puppy class a little later. Maybe they'll teach me what to do about her taking a chunk out of my leg!

Morning all. It was a great chat last night. I really enjoyed it.

I never did find the post from the new add (I think her name is Mary?) Can anyone help point me to it? I looked on 601 and didn't see it.

We had a nice anniversary dinner. The kids came with us, and were very well behaved. There is some hope for nice dinners on the cruise!! But I'm definitely looking for the food to be included in the price. DD had crab cakes as an appetizer, and in classic cruise fashion, she said "can I have some more of these?" At $12 per plate, the answer was "No, wait til you finish your main course." On the cruise, you know the servers would have hopped to!

Still watching the hurricane. I'm going to check the main board and see if there's any CC updates.

Have a great weekend all. Lisa

Well - it looks like the Bahamas really took a hit. I've been sitting here watching the weather channel and they said the airport is under water again - and a lot of buildings have lost their roofs....

I hope the Magic cruisers are enjoying Galveston...(here comes that song again......)

We're off to Morgantown for the WVU game today at 6pm. I know that you all are disappointed that the game is televised.... so I'll be glad to tape the replay for you...:teeth:

Hope that everyone enjoys their weekend - and stays safe.

Watching the weather last night gave me a start. Would you believe, we had a hurricane headed in our direction? I'm attracting hurricanes now. Its breaking up, but take a look at this map. Frances on the right coast, and Howard on the left.

http://www.weather.com/maps/news/epacdefault/index_large.html

Jim, cleaning the garage sounds better than shopping on the internet all day! (yes, DH told me what you said) It's a long, long wait for this one, isn't it? Charley was through in a matter of hours. Hope you FL posters are all on high ground.

Karen, glad the puppy is OK, sorry about your legs. We have had to eliminate soft food from our cat's diet for a while. He was throwing it up every day, but seems OK with the dry food. You would think that he would be OK with not getting something that's going to make him throw up, but noooo.

Lisa, I'd agree that the cruise spoils them a bit. It spoils me too. We never used to order appetizers when we went out to eat, now it seems that we always do. It's just not a nice meal unless it's more than one course! It's also amazing the number of new things the kids discover that they like. Seems like they're more willing to try new things when dining on the cruise. DD's list includes Caesar salad, creme brulee, and rare beef.

Stacey, I'm not sure I like your name for the leg rash thing. "Disneyworld Disease" has a nicer ring than "old lady leg disease", though yours is funnier.

DH wondered why folks from this board need to go to chat. He asked "isn't that what you do all the time"?

I found this old Dave Barry article, it gave me a laugh:

We're about to enter the peak of the hurricane season. Any day now, you're going to turn on the TV and see a weather person pointing to some radar blob out in the Atlantic Ocean and making two basic meteorological points.

(1) There is no need to panic.
(2) We could all be killed.

Yes, hurricane season is an exciting time to be in Florida. If you're new to the area, you're probably wondering what you need to do to prepare for the possibility that we'll get hit by "the big one." Based on our insurance industry experiences, we recommend that you follow this simple three-step hurricane preparedness plan:

STEP 1: Buy enough food and bottled water to last your family for at least three days.

STEP 2: Put these supplies into your car.

STEP 3: Drive to Nebraska and remain there until Halloween. Unfortunately, statistics show that most people will not follow this sensible plan. Most people will foolishly stay here in Florida.

We'll start with one of the most important hurricane preparedness items:

HOMEOWNERS' INSURANCE: If you own a home, you must have hurricane insurance.
Fortunately, this insurance is cheap and easy to get, as long as your home meets two basic requirements:

(1) It is reasonably well-built, and
(2) It is located in Wisconsin

Unfortunately, if your home is located in Florida, or any other area that might actually be hit by a hurricane, most insurance companies would prefer not to sell you hurricane insurance, because then they might be required to pay YOU money, and that is certainly not why they got into the insurance business in the first place. So you'll have to scrounge around for an insurance company, which will charge you an annual premium roughly equal to the replacement value of your house. At any moment, this company can drop you like used dental floss.

SHUTTERS:
Your house should have hurricane shutters on all the windows, all the doors,

There are several types of shutters, with advantages and disadvantages:

Plywood shutters: The advantage is that, because you make them yourself, they're cheap.

Sheet-metal shutters: The advantage is that these work well, once you get them all up.
The disadvantage is that once you get them all up, your hands will be useless bleeding stumps, and it will be December.

Roll-down shutters: The advantages are that they're very easy to use, and will definitely protect your house. The disadvantage is that you will have to sell your house to pay for them.

Hurricane-proof windows: These are the newest wrinkle in hurricane protection: They look like ordinary windows, but they can withstand hurricane winds! You can be sure of this, because the salesman says so. He lives in Nebraska.

Hurricane Proofing your property: As the hurricane approaches, check your yard for movable objects like barbecue grills, planters, patio furniture, visiting relatives, etc...
You should, as a precaution, throw these items into your swimming pool (if you don't have a swimming pool, you should have one built immediately).
Otherwise, the hurricane winds will turn these objects into deadly missiles.

EVACUATION ROUTE:

If you live in a low-lying area, you should have an evacuation route planned out. (To determine whether you live in a low-lying area, look at your driver's license; if it says "Florida," you live in a low-lying area). The purpose of having an evacuation route is to avoid being trapped in your home when a major storm hits. Instead, you will be trapped in a gigantic traffic jam several miles from your home, along with two hundred thousand other evacuees. So, as a bonus, you will not be lonely.

HURRICANE SUPPLIES:

If you don't evacuate, you will need a mess of supplies. Do not buy them now! Florida tradition requires that you wait until the last possible minute, then go to the supermarket and get into vicious fights with strangers over who gets the last can of SPAM. In addition to food and water, you will need the following supplies:

23 flashlights. At least $167 worth of batteries that turn out, when the power goes off, to be the wrong size for the flashlights.

Bleach. (No, I don't know what the bleach is for. NOBODY knows what the bleach is for, but it's traditional, so GET some!)

A big knife that you can strap to your leg. (This will be useless in a hurricane, but it looks cool.)

A large quantity of raw chicken, to placate the alligators. (Ask anybody who went through Andrew; after the hurricane, there WILL be irate alligators.)

$35,000 in cash or diamonds so that, after the hurricane passes, you can buy a generator from a man with no discernible teeth.

Of course these are just basic precautions. As the hurricane draws near, it is vitally important that you keep abreast of the situation by turning on your television and watching TV reporters in rain slickers stand right next to the ocean and tell you over and over how vitally important it is for everybody to stay away from the ocean.

Good luck, and remember: Its great living in Paradise.

Good Saturday to All the Holiday Cruisers!!

Chat last night was nice although with DSL it moves a bit slow. and having been up since 5:30(am) I was not keeping up well. GaRry I think I need Cable!!

Scuba Diver - Hope you and the family stay safe!!
Diana - Let's hope Howard just turns around a runs the other way I found Alicia's thread but I'm sure you knew that already.

Virgil - Enjoy the game!!

Stacey - I'm sure Christine's parents did trust you (if they could only see you now) lol -- just kidding. You really had a nice conversation with yourself last night. Sorry no one was around to keep you company. At least you knew you were in good company.

Minnie - hope the puppy can keep his/her? food down today. It's bad enough cleaning up after the kids when they are sick....

Yes GarRy I will take GOOD care of your babies!!

Hope everyone has a great day.

Vicki
