20040131 ~ Cruising Jan 31 2004 Western Who's with us?

Annie, So sorry that Randy is feeling poorly so close to the trip. I hope that all will be well for all of you before you leave.

SpaceSavers
I didn't post before about the SpaceSaver bags but I bought some to try. They are about $15 at Linens & Things for a package of 2 large and 2 small. The large are not that large and the picture on the box grossly exagerates how much space you save--however--it did reduce the space by (guessing here) about 20-25%. For me that is well worth it cause it could mean an extra suitcase.

Also, they are durable plastic so they should keep the clothes clean if something unfortunate (like shampoo) opens up or leaks in the suitcase.

Tip on purchasing. There are two types of space-savers. One type is for home use and requires a vacume cleaner to suck out all the air. The other is for travel use and requires you to roll the bag to get out all the air through a one-way valve. I did not look at the clothes after rolling--but we always bring an iron anyway. I would not count on wrinkle-free clothing after rolling the package.

One packing tip I have for those of you who like nicely pressed clothes--don't do it before you leave. Take your clothes wrinkled from the laundry and do it on the ship. Better to iron once than twice!

You can't imagine how happy it makes me to see those forecasts! I can't wait! :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

Just trying to think of another question for everyone. How's about this:

Tell us something about yourself, your family, your background that we might not already know or that we would find surprising.

Again, no skeletons need be revealed here unless you really want to. If you want to toot your own horn, go ahead. I think we'd all enjoy hearing it. I have decided that anything I did before marriage I have been forgiven for....ok, anything I did before I had kids......ok anything I confessed in church last week. :teeth:

If you guys think this is silly, just ignore it. There's enough drama in all of our daily lives to keep us chatting anyway!

The4OFUs- you mentioned early that you bought space saver bags from sears i was wondering if they worked.

Hey there Bobby!

I don't know if they work yet or not, I had to look EVERYWHERE for the ones that you just roll to get the air out of, cause what good would one that requires a vaccuum do us on the cruise, right? I'll test them this weekend and let you know - I figured for 10 dollars for 3 bags, what could be bad....

BOY, despite the fact that the kids and I have a 4 day week this week AND next, time is SOOOoooooo slow....

"Official" announcement coming later..... but I'm up and woooooo "I feel good"

Cap,
Where did you get those great forecasts? I didn't know anyone had them that far out. Sounds wonderful, oops, I mean MAGICAL!

Being in the Carribbean and all, things are pretty static, but for future use, how's this for a stat - any forecast more than 36 hours out is only about 30 percent accurate. When I worked as a meteorologist, I would get calls from people asking "I'm getting married in 6 months, at 2pm, what will the weather be like"...and get yelled at for telling them I can't even really tell them what next WEEK will be like! *grin*

Whoever got the space saver bags, how much are they and did they work? I'd like to take our own pillows if they do, we are used to ours and sleep better with them if we can use those... if not, we'll be fine.

Ooh, that's a really good idea, DD being an asthmatic, I tend to bring her pillows ANYWHERE I can...I'll try that later! I had such a hard time finding these kind....Linens & Things had the others, that need vaccuums, but not the "normal" kind.

Hi, shingle - don't you leave soon to start this MAGICal holiday?

Nikki - I don't see you dancin' girl. C'mon, pick those feet up, "Do the Hustle"....

Cap - quit looking for the paper and start dancin' - a one and two, and one and two.....

Gary - WAKE UP, DUDE! We're waiting for an OFFICIAL announcement here.

First of all, head thread, hope you are better. Chair dancing won't be all that bad, and great weather and friends will have you feeling better in no time.
We have some of the space saver bags that you roll up. They work okay, but you have a lot of wrinkles. There is a spray for wrinkles at the travel store. Did you know also that one or two drier sheets will take away static when rubbed on your clothes? Stick a couple in your suitcase.
I was thinking about bringing my pillow too. Does that mean I need an extra suitcase?

Judi-Can you believe that such an important day like today is the one everybody else decided to sleep in? C'mon, people!

Speaking of suitcases, is two apiece and a carry-on all we get to take?

Ladies and Gentlemen!!! Boys and Girls!!! Welcome to the

10 Day Dance!!!!!!!!

:cool1: :cool1: :jumping1:

Sorry I'm late!:( Darn work gets in the way!!!

:cool1:

Better? *wink*

We got the anti-wrinkle spray at our grocery store, haven't tried it yet. I admit, I'm taking a travel iron too...

Been thinking about Juli's question, something about our family that is unique and no one knows about it yet. Hmm. OK, how's this...when Alexander Graham Bell was "inventing" the telephone, he was also working as a teacher for the deaf and dumb...and at the time he was teaching a cousin of mine, and living in one of our family houses - my great-great-great-?-grandfather, Thomas Sanders, here in Salem, Mass. My family funded half of the invention...but when your kids are on the phone too long, don't blame me!! Of course, you know when the kids have to do a report about an inventor, they always pick him... *grin*

Let's see what else. Hmm. I think we're fairly boring really...sorry! :P

Oh, gee, is it really the 10-day dance already? I hadn't given it any thought.

Let's get down!

Hi Dean-
We are about 20 miles north of Magnolia! I think that is so neat that you have relatives here! When I was little-- my girl scout leader's name was Glenda Heller and we formed a softball team and called ourselves "Heller's Angels"! Pretty Cute Huh? Do you have any relatives in LaSalle? That's where I grew up.

Cap-- Thanks for the great forecast! When I read the word "humid"-- I thought "now there's a word I haven't heard in a long time!!!

Well I'm off to tan and think warm thoughts!

See ya soon!
Dorie

I was going to call them, but now I don't have to...

You post this on the superbowl thread in the general cruise forum?

::yes::

Annie - hope Randy is fine. So anxiety producing to be sick this close to a trip. My daughter and I are Mary Higgins Clark fans.

Dean - glad you're back. The posts weren't jumping without you.

Judi - I like the head thread tag for Dean. That's cute.

Extras to bring - someone suggested highlighters for picking what you want to do each day an post it notes to write messages to other family members.

Had bad news yesterday from my son's social studies teacher. He had a project due yesterday that was 25% of his grade and he didn't turn it in. Got home last night and found he was just starting it!!! Grr. *Pulls hair in frustration. Kicks stork that delivered son.* Info that people don't know - even though son gets honor roll grades and is super smart, he falls down every year (this is sixth one in a row) on completing long term assignments and turning them in on time. He has ADD. Lots of family angst over it.

Surprising stuff - gosh what's appropriate to tell? *Pushes skeletons back in closet*

What would people find most surprising? Mother started school for psychic research in 80s.

Annie, we're glad Randy is out of intensive care and into the regular beds. The down-side, for him, is that there won't be as many good looking nurses checking on him frequently. Tell him we said "Hi!".

For those who asked about the weather forecasts, I got them from Accuweather Premium. As with any weather service, take them with a grain of salt, but they are directionally correct. I find they have great accuracy on the sunrise / sunset times, and then start to drop off in their percentages. However, there was not a word about "snow", and the first number of the two digit Fahrenheit temperature started with a 7, 8, or 9, which is good enough for me, particulaly when the temperature outside here now is 03 F.

OK Dean, I don't dance much, but I'll try some steps for the 10-day event.

For Judi and me, it's a heavy packing day today, so we can really panic tomorrow before we leave Friday AM.

Talk with you later. Have a great day.
