...............................

The friends gather (usually the Saturday after Thanksgiving), we load up the pick em up trucks and the dogs (the trucks and dogs are required red neck accessories) we don't have dogs, we have to borrow one and several years ago we bought an old beater truck for just this purpose. We can tell the transplants from other states, they go up in their Jeeps, Subaru's or even their mini vans - city folk:upsidedow Throw in the snow gear, the chopping gear, the drinking gear and a picnic lunch and head out.

First stop, the convenience store on the hwy. just over the NV/CA state line in Hallelujiah Junction :confused3 that sells the Forest Service tree permits - $10 cash so the forest service can pocket the dough! Get the permit and the map. Proceed up into the mountains in N. California (near Doyle) and start looking for that perfect tree. Everyone has their "spot" unless there is a lot of snow we usually have no problem getting to our spot.

I like the noble firs which are at the higher elevations. When the perfect tree is found, cut it down, slap on the permit, haul it back to the fleet of trucks, have lunch and head back down the mountains.

Arrive home and realize that the "little" tree in that big ol'e forest is way tooooo big to get into the house. Proceed to chop off several feet until the desired 12' with the perfect top is reached.
(Okay, we have gotten smarter over the years, we take a tape measure with us  )

My BFF will come outside every year and say the same thing - "Dang, TreeZilla has arrived". Then she goes back into her house and decorates her 6', prelit, doesn't smell good but always looks perfect, plastic tree ;)

Oh, now I am excited!

We own a fake tree but haven't used it in the house. We buy a real, local tree to put inside. Our fake tree has been decorated on our sunporch, and has been featured in a local play, but unless Maine tree prices go sky high, it won't be our primary tree. :)

No tree for us, in the last 5 years unfortunately. I have a cat that is not so little that likes to climb. It was really cute the first year. When she was just a kitten and really little. The next year, when she topped out at about 18 pounds, she would scale that dang tree all the way to the top. And proceed to topple it over. And it was even tied up to the wall. We tried to secure it better and she still managed to knock it over 3 more times. So, we gave that tree away.

Now we decorate a very large wreath that we hang in the foyer. I miss having a real tree though. When we did buy real trees, we always got a concolor fir. They have the most amazing smell. Kind of a citrusy, pine scent.

Too bad you're so far away.. I have a pinkish/very light purple-ish Disney tree (put it up one year for my DGD when my late DH & I were still living in our own home) that's just sitting in a box in my DD's attic - lights, decorations, and all.. :(

You granddaughter doesn't have anywhere to use it? I'm sure there is a little girl in your area who would love it!

I buy a few ornaments for each of my kids each year (I'll have a 3rd to buy for next year!:goodvibes ). Dd9 has princess ornaments, ds11 has Ole Miss ornaments. They have cheap green trees, but I'd love to get them prettier ones.

Thanks-I'll check it out!

Artificial. The movie Christmas Vacation was enough to put me off real trees for a lifetime!:rotfl:

Artificial.

Kitty chews on real ones and I hate the sap and needles.

It's green, pre-lit (white lights) and I love it. Unfortunately, it's on loan to us and I'm hoping to get a great deal to have our own after Christmas this year!

ah yes, fat cat climbs the tree
We use Spider Wire fishing line and secure on 2 sides and the ceiling. Humans 1 Fat Cat 0
Sometime people will ask why there is a hook in our ceiling:confused3

We have a flocked artificial tree and we get a fresh cut tree every year too.

Artificial= for years and years.

Fake!! I hate the smell of real trees. Crazy, I know! When I was younger we had a real one... once. I remember my dad cussing a lot... not sure why, but it sure doesnt make me want to try again.

Three years ago DH and I moved into our first place together and purchased a real tree that proceeded to drop needles everywhere. But the real problem were the cats. The tree was put up and decorated in early December and a week later we had moved all the ornaments nearly three feet off the ground. This of course was amusing for everyone else who visited, but just made me sad looking at my half decorated tree everyday.

The next year we bought a wonderful, realistic fake 7.5' tree that I still have. It looks great and more importantly is kitty-proof. The smaller metal trunk deters climbing (and toppling) and I can bend the branches discretely around the ornaments so the cats can grab all they want and they won't come off!

Next task at hand: How to prevent the cats from destroying the wrapped presents each holiday season.

We've used fake since I was about three years old. We used to use real, but after I spent two Christmas's in the row in the hospital with pneumonia, they told us I am allergic to real trees.

I love our fake tree. My parents just upgraded to pre-lit and I would not let them throw out our old one. I love that I don't have to haul a heavy tree all over creation, worry about fire, dropped needles, etc. I don't know what I would even dowith a real tree. I have a fake one for my apartment, I couldn't tell you what kind it's supposed to be, I just got one that matched my grad student budget.

Kitty proof tree? Doesn't exist in our household! My father's cat loves to climb any fake tree she can. You can always tell where Ailaina's been because there are holes in the branches where htey have bent downward. At least with a fake tree we can just bend the branches back into place. She gets pretty high up too. Not sure how she manages it.

Growing up we always had a real white pine, loved it. Nothing like a real tree to me. My husband's family, who are very big into Christmas, have always had fake for some reason. So many years ago we switched to a fake tree, green. We just bought a new one last year. It looks pretty but still doesn't feel quite the same. I do like not having to water it though!

Real - or artificial?

And if it's artificial, is it green - or some other color?

We have a green artificial tree at DD's..

Both. We have a pre-lit 10' artificial tree we bought after Christmas on clearance at Home Depot when our house was being built. We knew we wanted it for the two story foyer - the only place in my house that gets white lights.

We always buy a Frasier Fir for the family room. I like them best because they hold their needles well and since my DH likes to keep the tree up for the better part of a month I need something that will hold its needles.

I grew up with a real Christmas tree...as an adult, always had an artifical tree of my own...and now that I have a feisty cat who likes to climb, I don't have any tree at all!

Pre-lit green!

Haven't had a real tree for a couple of years now, I am thinking maybe next year as I will not be home this year.

Years and years ago we went to a tree farm and it was freezing cold outside. I picked what I thought was the right sized tree, I guess the cold made my eyesite a little off :rolleyes1 The height was okay, the width on the other hand. It had to be more than 6 feet wide.
