Month 1 of my "no new clothes for a year" is done!!! lol

I successfully avoided the Gap 30% and 50% (!!) sales, haven't looked at the Lands End catalog, and threw away the Justice coupons. Hooray!

Also sold all my DD's outgrown clothes for $200 and added that to the Disney fund.

Only 11 months to go :rotfl:

Way to go!!!! We did this a year ago. I did make exceptions for kids who outgrew things and my running shoes. No point in an injury! It went VERY well! Simply get into the habit of recycling the catalogues and deleting those sale emails. Don't even look! Now, it's a habit. I don't look unless I need something!!!

Keep it up!

Wow! Great job! You stayed out of the stores AND you made $200! Keep it up!!

Way to go

I wish I could do this this year but I recently lost 30 pounds and none of my clothes fit any long so I donated the to the arni foundation and had to buy new clothers. But I am all set now until the Spring.

Way to go! I really want to go to the Baby sale at ON but I really shouldn't. The girls each have over 7 new outfits for fall all from TCP. So I really shouldn't go to ON this weekend.

I'm going to try and join you Beezle but I'm running into 1 problem
.
1) We're celebrating our 25th in Paris next May so I'll definitely want to buy some things for that.

I may set a budget for it and simply try to avoid all other clothing purchases. :lmao:

Congratulations on your first success.

Well, I would rather pay for new clothes and have lost 30 pounds! Way to go!

How did you do it?

How was your overall experience with this? Do you mind sharing? Did you find it to be really hard?

I think I'm going to have to make an exception for new snow pants for DD 8, looks like she is not going to fit last years! I agree about the shoes, I was planning ahead and have 3 good pairs though!

Well Yeah!! You have to make the U.S. look GOOD! I'm doing this for this year but you can bet I'll have new stuff for our Dec '11 Disney Trip. And hopefully I'll need them because I lost weight :)

May I ask how old your DD is and how you plan to not buy her anything next spring/summer? I ask cause my DD is 7 and growing like a darn weed, she's killing me, and I know come next spring & summer, nothing she wore this past summer and is still wearing to start school is going to work? What's your plan? I might steal it!

my DD is 8 and she loves the stretchy type capris and shorts for the warmer weather. Her favorites this year were 3 pair of Gap capris that were terry loop on the inside and very soft. I'm sure those will fit next year because I bought them a bit big, they have a drawstring waist. She also has 6 pair of nylon type shorts from Justice that she got this year and 5 or 6 pairs of other stretchy capris from Childrens Place that will probably still work. She has 2 pair of denim capris that are a little big now and if I need more I will cut off some of her jeans from this Fall just to hold out. The denim capris from Old Navy have an unfinished hem anyway and look like they where just cut so we will still be fashon forward, lol.

We have at least 4 summer dresses, 8 camis (sparkly neck and hems), 10 tanks ( 4 plain and 6 dressier ones), 9 tees and 4 dressier tops from the Gap. She has 4 bathing suits that fit now but that may be an issue because she will be swimming at the Y this winter. I won't send her to camp in a raggy suit. She has 4 pair of flip flops because the ones I bought this year were too big and she ended up wearing her ones from last year. She will most likely fit into her new tennis shoes through the summer but she prefers the flip flops.

Really, it wasn't hard at all! I'm VERY frugal by nature, so this wasn't too hard. Once I got out of the habit of looking at the catalogues and emails and ads, I didn't even realize things were on sale and there wasn't really a desire to shop. I went back through my clothes and discovered some wonderful things I'd forgotten about!

The hardest thing for me was not shopping for my dd. She's the youngest of four and the only girl. I LOVE shopping for girl clothes! But, realistically, we didn't need anything for her. She's been fine!

Try shopping in thrift stores for the leggings. We've been shopping at a thrift store for most of our clothes since that year and we've gotten GREAT stuff! We always find Columbia or Lands' End winter coats and leggings for around $5 each. (Another brag - my ds14 just outgrew his suit and we found a beautiful wool one, with the tags still on it for $8!!!!)

Anyway, you CAN do this! I found it helpful when I was tempted, to look on line or at a catalogue or even at a store. Figure out how much I would have spent if I had been buying and then transfer that amount over to our vacation fund. I still do that. When we shop at the thrift store and get an entire season's worth of clothes for four (well, really, three - Meg has everything she needs for a while), for $50, I'll transfer over $200 to represent the money I saved. Seeing that account add up REALLY made the difference in my success.

We still do this to some extent. I don't buy things for myself really any more. I'm content with what I have now. We don't get things for the kids unless it's a true need. We live with less. It's kind of freeing actually.

Probably more than you wanted to know. But, there it is!!! Good luck.

Great goal :). One thing that might make it easier is unsubscribing from the lists and calling and canceling the catalogs. I did that awhile back and it makes me happy not to have to recycle something like catalogs that I never even looked at :).

Congrats on month one!
