1st Canadian vacation- UPDATE page 2!! it was great!

Since you're visiting Niagara Falls you should check out the Ripley's Believe It Or Not museum. Quite interesting stuff. And of course the Maid of the Mist.

As for Toronto I'd say what everyone else has. CN Tower, ROM and the Zoo...etc. If you're looking for shopping you could head over to the Eaton Centre. We don't have the same deals as you Americans but it's worth a visit if only to laugh at our prices. :rotfl:

Hope you have a good trip!

We had a GREAT trip! DD and DH want to go back next year.

Left NC on Friday, 7/1. Arrived in Buffalo 10 hours later and spent the night there. Got up on Sat. morning and drove 30 mins to Niagra Falls. Beautiful! Didn't do any paid activities, just went to the US side welcome center and the observation area. DD was impressed with the rapids leading up to the falls, and when she saw the actual falls, she was really excited.

After leaving the falls, we headed across the border. Checked in with the really nice Canadian Border Guard guy- we almost threw DD out of the car, though. She made a little joke about firearms when he asked if we had any (we do not own any). She piped up from the backseat, "We left all our dangerous firearms at home!". We laughed it off and shushed her, and let her know that is NOT something to joke about with people who can detain you at the border (or airport, etc)!:rotfl:

3 hours of driving later, we arrived at our resort in Collingwood. It was very nice, and Collingwood is beautiful! We stopped for lunch along the way in Orangeville- loved it, too! The country was so pretty on the drive- we were surprised at the number of vineyards near the US border.

We really just relaxed and enjoyed the peace and quiet in Collingwood- went to the grocery store and stocked up on food for the week (we were amazed at milk in a bag!!)- DH also just about died with happiness at The Beer Store. He was like a kid in a candy store, picking out fun Canadian microbrews to try.

We did a lot of swimming at the resort. We also hit the beach one day- very nice!! DH and I liked just strolling along the waterfront at the marina across the street from our villa. The weather was BEAUTIFUL!! Lows in the 60's, highs ranging from the upper 70's to mid 80's. We did a lot of just sitting outside, hanging out and enjoying the weather. We grilled out for dinner almost every night and really enjoyed our lazy time.

We did head into Toronto 2 days- drove both times. We were going to try out the GO train, but the Barrie North station only had trains running at really early rush hour times. Quite limited stervice. We decided to just take the car in. Went to the Zoo one day- arrived, after a bit of a GPS adventure, at around 11am. The GPS wanted to direct us to the Administrative Offices rather than the public entrance, so it had us trying to enter the back of the zoo on an unmarked gravel road. We found our way to the main entrance after a bit of confusion.

The zoo was fun- it was much bigger and more spread out than we expected. We decided we needed to head out by 3pm so we wouldn't get stuck in bad traffic- we only made it through about 1/2 of the zoo before we had to leave. What we saw was really nice- DD loved the polar bears and DH and I liked the African pavilion very much.

Our other Toronto day was spent mostly driving around the city, taking in the sights. We had originally decided to go to the ROM, but changed our minds that morning. We ended up driving through a lot of downtown areas (saw the Easton area, CN tower, old residential areas, etc) and walking around the St. Lawrence Market and surrounding area.

We really loved our Canadian adventure- everyone we met was so nice! We definitely want to go back next year- thinking of trying Montreal.

If you plan to have a day trip in Toronto, I would recommend you choose out of these 3 options.

-A day downtown to visit the CN Tower, Casa Loma, and the Eaton Centre. Even if you don't like shopping, The Eaton Centre is still a very cool place to visit.

-A day at the zoo. It's located in the north-east part of Toronto, in Morningside. Not only is it far from downtown, but the zoo definitely takes a whole day to experience.

-A day at the Ontario Science Centre. This is also located uptown Toronto. Kind of in the middle of the city. Again quite a drive/transit from downtown. This also takes about a whole day of exploring. I've been there many times and I always spend the whole day there. There's just a lot to look at and do and interact with.

Parking downtown can be pricey, especially on the weekends. If you choose the downtown option on the weekend, you can park in one of the subway parking lots, and buy the $10 day pass that your whole family can use for unlimited travel on that day. Many subway parking lots are free on the weekend.

If you go to the zoo, parking is free.

At the Ontario Science Centre, parking is $10.

Hope this helps!

The zoo is in Scarbourough not Morningside. Parking is not free it is $10.00
Very few subway stations have their own parking lots, it is usually limited to stations not within the downtown core such as Yorkdale

I'm assuming they meant near the Morningside exit on the 401...not a town called that.:confused3

MomofKatie, really glad you and your family enjoyed your trip. That "beer store" your DH loved--you probably noticed the grocery store you were in didn't have any beer. None of them do, in Ontario. If you want to buy beer, "The Beer Store" is where you gotta go. Weird, eh? (Just had to sneak the Canadianism in there somewhere...)
What stood out for you on your trip? Strange things, things that were different than what you might expect? I love the fact that US and Canadian culture is so similar in so many ways and yet very different in other ways. It's the little things. Like gravy on french fries. It's completely normal in Canada to put gravy on fries--you put it on mashed potatoes, right?--and yet go across the border and people will look at you like you're from Mars...
Anyway, thanks for coming, and do come again. Canada is just as varied as the U.S. for geography and tradition, if not more so. There's so much to see and do...

I think Ontario is the only province with milk in bags. We haven't had that out here in the West in many years.

I live in New Brunswick and we still have milk in bags.:goodvibes

MomofKatie I wish I would have seen this before. Did you go to Blue Mountain and do the Mountain Coaster? It's a new ride that goes down the side of the ski hill. Loads of fun. My DH is from Collingwood. Go every summer to Wasaga Beach where my parents live.
Sounds like you had a nice time. I will be back in Collingwood this time next week.:thumbsup2

Yes, the milk-in-a-bag thing kinda fascinated us. DD went searching for milk at the store while we bought some meat and cheese from the deli. She came back with a paper carton 1/2 gallon (or 2 liters, I guess). I asked why she didn't get a jug and she said there weren't any. When we got to the milk area, I was surprised and perplexed to find no jugs, just bags. I thought, whaaat?!? How do you pour it? Do you just put it in a pitcher when you get home? :confused3:laughing:

A few days later, we went back to the store and asked the checkout clerk about the bags of milk. We said we were ignorant Americans and we thought it was weird but cool to see milk packaged that way. She said there were milk-bag holders you could buy that let you pour the milk right out of the bag! We ended up not buying any milk-in-a-bag, but it was something we just thought was cool (why, I'm not sure, but it just charmed us for some reason).

As for other differences, we got a kick out of the same products with different brand names at the store. We also spent a good bit of time doing metric conversions- everything from gas prices, speed limits, weather forecasts, to buying deli meats made us do a little math in our heads. We did pretty well with everything except celcius/farenheit- we just couldn't get a clear handle on the conversion. We just ended up poking our heads out the door in the morning and deciding the temp was "Canada beautiful" every day, forget the official Celcius reading! :thumbsup2

We noticed a lot of Indian restaurants- waaaay more than where we live. Here it's more Chinese and Thai. And the city of Toronto was so cosmopolitan and multi-cultural- very cool. Quite expensive, though- we were a little shocked at prices for gas, restaurant food, and attraction admissions. Supermarket prices were more in line with the US, though.

The one really weird thing- we arrived in Ontario on Canada Day weekend. Everywhere we looked, there were Canadian flags- on businesses, houses, and stores. It seemed funny to us that so many flags were up- but then we realized, it is like the American flags on 4th of July- everyone is just displaying their national pride. I guess we weren't used to seeing the Canadian flag so much- it seemed more like a cute picture than a national symbol to us at first.

If you returned here in mid January...I guarantee you would not be saying that!!:lmao: "Canada cold"..every day...;)

Thanks for the chuckle BTW...I've never once thought that milk in a bag could ever be abnormal.

So glad you enjoyed your trip !
Us Canadians can be very patriotic when it comes to our flags
Yes Toronto can be expensive but there are parts of the city where you can get decent meals at reasonable prices.
I do hope you will come again.

MomofKatie, you sound half-Canadian already. :) Many of us Canucks have to be at least semi-fluent in Imperial as well as metric, because this country never fully metricated. I work in a grocery store (I manage the milk-in-a-bag department as well as the frozen foods) and every week we get people asking for a quart or a pint of milk. We haven't sold milk in that exact size since the 70s...but we do give our meat prices per pound. The deli meats might be per pound or per hundred grams. As for temperature, you'll often hear it expressed in Fahrenheit. And unless you're under twenty years old you likely have no idea of your height in centimeters or your weight in kilos.

I stopped in Charlotte on the way down to the World last October. We stayed in the Northlake area. Gorgeous city. I went book-shopping at Northlake Mall and the clerk asked where I was from. When I told her "Canada", she asked what part. I said "near Toronto" because I wouldn't expect anyone know know Kitchener-Waterloo, but she pinned me down further and shocked me by saying she'd been here...wow.
Prices *must* have shocked you, because I was shocked how *cheap* everything is down your way. I have no defence other than to say our minimum wage is $3/hr higher and all that "free" health care we get up here...isn't. ;)
Anyway, thanks for coming.

Yes, I meant Morningside road.

I now know parking at the zoo is $10. It didn't used to be 2 years ago.

Also, I talked about subway parking lots, not subway stations. The point is to park at one of the parking lots and subway down to the downtown core, instead of parking IN the downtown core which can be very expensive.

MomofKatie, so glad you had such a great time up here! Collingwood is such a beautiful and relaxing place.

Did you check out our chip flavours? I know that we have a lot more variety of potato chip flavours than down there, like ketchup!

Wow, you drove around downtown! Even as a local, I avoid doing that. Good on you! The St.Lawrence Market is such a cool place. I guess restaurant prices DO seem more expensive because of the exchange rate that still exists up here and our taxes, but I'm glad you enjoyed the multi-culturalism!

Yes- we tried several interesting chip flavors- we shopped at Loblaw's and tried their store brand (President's Choice, I think?). Got Thai spiced, Louisiana Hot Sauce, and Tandoori BBQ. Loved them all! Didn't try ketchup, but saw them in the store.

Downtown was not too terrible to drive in- we did get a little misplaced leaving the Market, but got back to Collingwood eventually.

We expected a bill from the Tollway- never had to pay at a booth or anything. Maybe they figured we were too far away in NC to bother sending a bill to us. We didn't drive too long on the toll roads, anyway.

The zoo has always charged for parking.
The subway parking lots that are near a station are usually green p lots and they are never free, now subway lots near a station such as VP are free with a pass.
Parking downtown on a weekend is usually cheaper then a weekday.
