18-200mm lenses

Very nice, you have some great shots. Really like the shot of the apples.

Really nice shots there! Don't you just love that lens?

I DO! I LOOOOOVE It. It was so great having a lens with more range than the 18-55 when we were out. The picture of the painter, for example...I was shy to actually walk up and take it, so I took it paparazzi style instead from a little far away so I could still get a shot without having to seem crazy or invading someone else's nice Saturday afternoon.

I think I may give the 18-200 my DH's side of the bed. Think that would be a problem??? :rotfl:

Nice work Ann. I like the apple picking shots and you did a great job capturing the sights on your walk. Nice detail and very good composition.

Glad to see that your loving your equipment thus far.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks! And again, thank you so much for all of your help, patience and opinions so far. It has really been great having a real person to ask my questions to, rather than relying solely on Google and Yahoo! Answers :goodvibes

"Super Shots"....Ann !!! :thumbsup2

Great perspective.
Enjoy that lens and come on down to the Jersey shore, bird migration happening soon at the Brigantine Wildlife Refuge (Tuckerton)!! :goodvibes

I just reserved the Canon 18-200 mm IS for my upcoming Disney Trip (Oct 31-Nov 5). I am really looking forward to trying it out and will post back after our trip. I have a Rebel XT. I rented it from LensRentals.com.

That's a great idea! My in-laws live in Ocean City so I was already considering taking a trip to OC to get pix of the deserted boardwalk, as well as a trip to Cape May for some pix of the nice buildings around town.

Bird migration though would be a great way to test out the zoom on my new lens...just don't look up with your mouth open. ;)

I reserved it for right after you get it back in. I leave for disney on the 8th of November.

Nice shots:thumbsup2 You really have an eye for photography. Enjoy, it's a great lens and camera!

If you're ever in Hunterdon we could take our 18-200 babies for a walk around Washington's Crossing. Lovely this time of year:)

That would be great! I'm right around Washington's Crossing all the time, I work in Princeton. I was actually considering going up to Bowman's Tower to take some pictures once the leaves start to change a little more. If I'm ever thinking about heading up there on a weekend with nice weather, I'll give ya a heads up! :goodvibes

Congradulations on the new camera! Thats a great setup you've got yourself started with. Another book to consider is "Understanding Exposure" or "Understanding Shutter Speed" by Bryan Peterson. Either can easily be found at amazon for about $17

I really like the way he uses examples of what he's talking about. I've gotten a lot out of the "Understanding Exposure" book and referenced it a lot when I first got it. Its a nice book to have to keep going back to as you learn.

Now get out there and take some pictures!!! ::yes::

I try not to buy books (except for my all time favorites), I support the local public library instead :) I actually have Understanding Exposure on hold to pick up from the library tomorrow. If I start reading it and end up thinking it is worth having handy in case I need to look something up after I'm done reading, I'll suck it up and buy it. For now though, even if it's a mere $17 I can think of something that I can't get from the library that I would rather spend it on...like a remote shutter control :goodvibes

Well, one strike I can see against it is it's not USM focusing. Also, I'll bet the barrel rotates during focusing, which makes using a polarizing filter difficult.

Other than that, it would make a great walkaround lens.

I found this description of it from b&h:
The lens design incorporates an inner focusing system, which prevents the front of the lens from rotating, thereby making it particularly suitable for use with circular polarizing filters and petal shaped lens hoods.

So wouldn't the filter work ok?

You are absolutely correct. I stand corrected. I must have been thinking of a different lens.

I look forward to hearing and seeing your experience with the lens.

We leave for WDW next Saturday and my husband decided that this lens would make a great early Christmas present for me. Amazon has a decent price and can get it to me before we go. Has anyone purchased this lens from Amazon recently? I need to know if it is the "updated" lens they are selling with the Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM). It is not noted in the description, and customer service is useless. I assume Amazon sells current product, but . . .

Haven't purchased this lens specifically, but have always had good experiences with them in the past. If you are worried that the description doesn't say it has a HSM because you have the Nikon D40, D40X or D60, don't worry about it. I just looked up a list of fully compatible lenses that will auto-focus on those camera bodies on nikonians.org and the lens on Amazon is listed.

That being said, any chance DH would be willing to shells out a little extra money to get you the 18-200mm VR from Nikon?? I posted a question a month or two ago asking for recommendations on which I should by, and got an overwhelming response of "get the Nikon", not because the Sigma wasn't a good lens, but that the Nikon was preferred if the extra money could be spent.

I purchased the 18-200mm VR and have to say, it was a bit steep (it's $600 and change on Amazon.com with free shipping) but SOOOO worth the money. I love this lens. Very versatile, very sharp (with the exception of a ltitle softness at the 18 and 200 ends) and just overall a dream to shoot with if you just want a "walkaround" lens.

Happy shopping and I'm sure you'll love whichever one you get.
