18-200mm lenses

I just came back on Saturday. I did take my 18-200 with me. That being said, it is a clunker and made the camera pretty heavy! I didn't take any other lenses to the park (MK) though and didn't have to worry about changing anything out or a heavy bag. That was nice. I was shooting a big family and 3 kids under 5 too, so the zoom was kind of nice.

I have a 50 and did wish I had taken that for the amazing bokeh it presents and the fact that it is faster and better in low light. So I think your 30 will be great. You can always crop after the fact.

Side note - I hope you have a filter on the end of your lenses!! My 2 year old knocked my camera off of the stroller a second after I sat it there to open my bag.:eek::eek: It landed directly on the end of the lens. I completely had a heart attack, since it is a pricey lens. The lens cap was jammed in and the filter was cracked. Once I was able to unscrew the filter, the lens itself was completey fine! I could not believe it. I have to get a replacement filter ASAP, but I was so thankful the lens was okay! :woohoo:

Been there already! Last month, I decided to try traveling light in the parks, and since I wanted to take my 10-24 with me for the first time, and needed the Sigma 30mm for low light...I decided to leave the 18-250 in the villa. I did MK and Hollywood Studios with just those two lenses. And though my 18-250 has probably taken 95% of all shots I've taken in Disney since I bought it...I figured just like you that it might force me to look differently at everything, and maybe get some new shots (and it did).

That said...there were times that were slightly 'D'oh!'...like when I went to Lights, Motors, Action, having never photographed it before, and realizing that my longest lens was the 30mm F1.4. Sitting 60-100 feet up in a stadium and shooting a stunt show with a 30mm made me feel almost silly...yet surprisingly the shots were usable (after cropping about 70% of the shot away!), so it wasn't the end of the world. And for the most part, I was happy to travel with the 10-24 on the camera most of the time, swapping on the 30mm when needed.

My 18-250 will still get a ton of duty at Disney...this December it will definitely be the #1. But the 10-24mm and the 30mm will be the stalwart standbys, as needed, for those different shots now that I've been enlightened to the new possibilities the UWA and low light primes give!

Sounds just fine to me. I would even question taking the UWA and the Fish both- but the 10.5 is so small it hardly takes up any space anyway.

I'll be taking my Canon 70-200mm, but will only drag it out on a couple of days. I will not tour with it. It's way too heavy, but I just know I'll want it some.

I'll probably lug my Tamron 28-75mm everywhere, though.

I know what ya mean, I'm sure in December there will be plenty of times when I want the 200mm length (like in AK) but since we're just doing MK this trip I figured anything I missed I could get in a few months. :thumbsup2

I have a feeling Karyl would kill me if I didn't bring the 10.5. I've had her fisheye for over a month now, she probably wants it back. :rolleyes1

Even though I'll be bringing both to WDW, I won't be bringing both to the park on the same day. Fisheye on day 1 and after I return the fisheye to Karyl I'll use the Tokina on day 2.

I think it sounds like a good plan since you are not going to AK this trip. I dont think you are going to have time to miss not having that lens.

Most days I will be going to the park with the 17-55mm which will be on the camera most of the time. Any dark ride shots I want to get I will switch to the 35mm 1.8. AK day I will be taking the 70-300, 17-55 and the 35. One or two days that I dont have the 70-300 in the bag I will be also taking the 10.5 just to get some different shots.

I would take it, but your plan seems pretty sound. Are you still taking that film camera?

Naaaaaaah, I think I'm going to save that for December also. When I made my original list, I didn't take into account how early it has been getting dark. In December, I'll have more daylight to play with it.

I am so excited for you that you are close to getting to WDW. I do not believe I have seen anyone plan and plot a trip to Disney photographically more than you. Just remember to have fun doing it.

I just got back last week and brought my 18-270 along. That type of lens has always been my favorite. But given the record heat (and the big bag of costumes I cart around) I found myself wanting to pare down for the first time ever. The first thing to go? The big lens. My husband and son were coming a few days after us, so I called home to have them bring my smaller kit lens. That and my new 30mm f1.4 were enough, especially since we never made it to AK. I would have enjoyed shooting the Indiana Jones Stunt show with it, but it just wasn't worth it.

I'll still use that long lens as my primary lens, but in that heat.......... no.

I agree with everyone else, Ann. I think you'll do just fine. Since you don't have kido's to chase around - you'll have all the time you need to look at things with a different eye and take the time to set up your shots.

I rented the UWA Tokina for our trip to TX, NOLA, ATL next week. Can't wait to give that one a try.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with - with the fisheye, you know how much fun I had with the one I brought on my last trip. ;)

I must have too much time on my hands at work. Shhhhh, don't tell my bosses. :rolleyes1

Yeah and with the 10-day forecast showing upper 80's/low 90's right now, I'll be lucky if I want to carry anything around. :faint:

Oooooh, enjoy it...I'm sure it'll be loads of fun. You still need to post pictures of your trip to my home state popcorn::

Do any of you know if the Tamron AF 18-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD If lens will work on the Nikon D40? Will it Auto focus ? (I;m assuming that's what AF means but I am so confused!!)

Yes it will but make sure you order the one for the Nikon mount. I have the 18-270 and I use that as my walk around lens.Thats a nice lens

It doesn't work on the D40x. I bought one last week and had to return it. It worked on my D90 and I also bought an 18-250 which worked on both. I had read ahead of that it would work. Better do some research before you buy.

We are heading out to Disney at the end of month and I would like to purchase a good walkaround lens. I don't use my camera enough to justify spending any more than around $500. I have the 18-55mm kit lens and the "nifty fifty". I am looking for more zoom. I want a lense that I can also use to take pictures at my sons' outdoor games. I would love the 70-200mm but it's way out of my price range. I'm also very petite and worry about large lenses. Which of these two would you recommend?

Thanks.

I have that lens on my canon D50. I like it and it is my every day and was my only lens...well still is till TUE! Then I have my 85 arriving....
It would work fine for me at Disney. But I am not that great at composing and really using my camera to it's fullest....slowly i am getting there.
When I was shopping for my lens I was torn between the two you are talking about, so glad I went with the 18-200. I think for the price it is well worth it.

We picked up a 2nd hand BNIB 28-135 to use as a walkaround lens for our last Disney trip. Our thinking was that we wouldn't want the hassle of having to lug and change lenses while in the parks. Would've liked the 18-200 but it was going for around twice as much at the time (around $500 vs. $250 we paid for the 28-135). I missed having room on the wide end with the 28-135, plus it is a heavy lens (although I believe the 18-200 is even a little heavier). I think the term "jack of all trades, master of none" applies with this lens. Picture quality is fine, but I don't find myself using it a lot since returning from WDW. In hindsight, I'd rather have spent the extra money and went with the 18-200.

If you're OK with switching lenses (which didn't end up being the hassle we initially thought it would be) , the 55-250 lens is a great compliment to your kit lens. It will provide more zoom, plus it's a lot lighter than the 2 walk around options you listed. And it only costs around $250.

how about a third option, the Canon 55-250IS. Do a search and you'll find it's a good sharp telephoto zoom lens for only $200 refurbished or used.
