12 Day Stay - Ticket Options

12 days can be blissful but also beyond exhausting. I truly think I’d have a day or two for Disney springs, hotel hopping to grab some fun snacks. Resort time and/or Shopping etc. Did you consider one AP to get additional discounts .. room, dining etc?
May be worth researching
Have a magical visit?!!

Kids are 20, 18, and 14, so most of those activities would not work for us anymore! They just want to be busy all the time. We will be at Riviera for the first half, and then Bay Lake Tower for the rest.
Times of arrival and departure would be helpful to determine a plan? Are you taking Magical Express?
We are "park people" too, so we understand being busy.

We were a Disney only family until this last trip. My boys are 13 and 9. They loved Universal just as much as Disney. For your kids ages, my guess is they are even more likely to prefer Universal. I'd give it a 2 day try.

We do 14-night stays and get 10 day park tickets. Arrival day and departure day are no-park days. One of the un-ticket days we are doing MNSSHP, so it's sort of a park day. Then we take two 'down' days, which usually involve time in the pool, Disney Springs, a dinner show at one of the resorts, mini-golf, etc.

Last time, we used one of our 'down' days as a water park day, too.

Another vote for Universal, given the age of your kids. It won’t be cheaper than a Disney 2-day ticket, but it will be variety and my older kids love it.

I'd spend a day driving over to Cocoa Beach and the space coast, personally. Especially if there's a rocket launch scheduled. Pretty incredible to watch.

I would do Universal too. I really like Universal and I think it will appeal to your kids especially if they are Harry Potter fans :) Another idea is if there are any after hours events offered.... I know it’s not released yet but maybe watch out for that too. I can say I really had fun in the 2 that I attended a few weeks ago.

Don't overlook Sea World. Some of the coasters there are world class. Often you could get a 2 for 1 deal.

Definitely worth looking into Universal; when we went in 2015 we bought two-day tickets to UO and they were like WDW tickets in the sense that you didn't have to use them consecutively--since we were staying onsite at WDW the whole time and taking a cab over to UO regardless it was actually kind of nice to do a UO day near the start of the trip and then wait to do the second one near the middle. Since it sounds like you're already set on WDW resort reservations that's probably the way to go, though normally I'd suggest doing a split stay at UO to avoid taking a cab so many times if you're planning to do two or more days there.

Another thing I might consider in your shoes if you decide to do all WDW would be to buy a 10 day hopper and a 2 day non-hopper. Do the non-hopping days at the start of the trip so it feels like an upgrade when you shift to hopper mode. I'm a big fan of the park hopper, but on a 12 day trip I think I would be able to live with two non-hopping park days in order to save $60 per person.

This is us as well.

We don’t do anything on travel days. I find travel days exhausting. Arrival day we might do a character meal if we get in early enough and/or possibly hit the Springs and wander around but that’s about it.

On our No ticket days:
-MVMCP
-Choose a rain day and hang out at the resort watching movies and chilling. -Perhaps book a Hoop Dee Doo dinner this day.
-Resort hop ending at the Boardwalk for nighttime entertainment. It’s surprising how you can fill a day by doing this.

Or as other have stated there’s always the many many attractions beyond WDW.

Happy planning!

Thank you for all of your replies. While I think we could manage a 1/2 day of staying at the resort, I know my kids will be completely bored by evening and want to go to the parks. Are there any tours that have park admission included? I've looked at mostly everything and they all require admission to the park to attend. An after hours ticket may work also, but thats if they continue that into next year.
We are going to hang at our resort one day and go to Disney Springs another day. It's easier for us as we are going alone. You can go to Animal Kingdom Lodge and go out on the porch and watch the animals and then have lunch or dinner at Sanaa. Also if you booked the package you should receive the passes for miniature golf. Lots to do on non-resort days. I priced out AP and didn't think it was worth it but that's just us. Have a great time!
