Kim--on cars:
We tend to keep cars for quite a while. My last car, a Jeep Cherokee, was about 8 years and 125,000 miles. got quite frustrated with that vehicle (replaced transmission, transfer case, tires many times, brakes many times, etc) so that seemed even longer than 8 years!
DH's Toyota Celica was 9 years old and I'm not sure how many miles, but quite a few. My Toyota minivan is "only" 5 years old and about 60,000 miles and I don't thing I'll be replacing it anytime soon.

We've done the old car thing through college. (i swear i'm still paying on somewhere for my DH's VW rabbit that ate tires and spit out wheel bearings monthly and then went through several alternators before dying a slow death due to electrical failure.)

Then we had one new car and one older 83 Chevy pickup until we moved to MD. (we sold the truck in PA because we were afraid it wouldn't make it here and it was in no way reliable enough to drive on the beltway.)

Since moving down to MD, both DH and i have been driving new cars (I'm on my 2nd Honda civic lease {our smaller car}) and Dh is driving a Honda CRV. Larger vehicle without heavy gas use and you can park it like a smaller car.

I know it's not the most "economical" way to go but with all of our daily stresses, The last thing i need to worry about is a broken down car.

You also need room for the "kids". You don't have chihuahuas you need that space. ;)

one night we left the salt for the front walkway sitting on the front doorstep and got woken up around 1am with someone banging on the front door - I was terrified. But it was the porcupine wrestling with the salt bag - he thought he found nirvana. they love salt. it's some kind of adaptation from living around humans I think.

Oh elaine...those little guys don't sound fun at all. How do ya get rid of them?

DH took DD to school. I can actually take a shower before my call and not rush to do one after to leave for my meeting. Yeah!!!!

Have a wonderful morning everyone. I hope it is a less stressful day for all today. :sunny: (it's overcast here but we can all use a little sun)

Well we have some real big wigs coming into the office today. We're told everyone has to be on their best behavior. Does that mean I'm not allowed to Dis?

Happy Wednesday!

I'm glad DD likes the PT because I've already told her it's her first car.

DD will turn 16 right after our loan ends on the CRV. With the all-wheel drive and stuff, I'm thinking we might keep it for her.

(then again, now that i work in town, I am hoping to get a scooter :moped:. With a restrictor installed (no speeds over 35mph) DD will be able to drive it to school, no license needed, in our state. (that way we can save on insurance for a couple more years.) The HS will be about 2 miles away and there's only one road to go down and the speed limit there is 35 anyway.

Yes, Due to the larger Fur-kid, i will probably look for something larger when it comes time to trade in the civic. (April 2008). I've liked the reliability of my Honda's. I was thinking maybe an element because you can take the rear seats out easily so plenty of Fur-kid room.

(abby only fits in my civic if i recline the front seat all the way down :crowded: )
Even in the CRV, everyone laughs and says "Mam, did you know you have a horse in that car?". :rotfl:

Abby loves how everyone fusses over her every place we go. You don't see dogs of her breed all that often. Now that she's getting a little more mellow with age, i am thinking of getting her certified as a therapy dog. There is a new group that has started up in town. The have 6 places that their dogs visit so far but are looking at more once other dogs/trainers join their group. With their group your dog doesn't necessarily need their CGC (canine good citizen) certification, but must go through "Delta" therapy training (i think that's what it's called.) The couple who started the group have a 2 yr old male Berner named Charlie. He's about the same size as Abby (a little rounder because he's come into more of his adult weight) but a real sweetheart. I've met him a few times over the last year.

We'll see. I don't want to make any time commitments i can't keep.

One of the other silly little things that happened at my wedding is that the cake was never delivered.

Somehow I always have a sixth sense about the big things and I asked hubby to check about the cake and he starts in with "don't worry of course it's here". NADA!!!

they had to send someone out in the pouring rain to get the wedding cake.

lucky for us, the ceremony is only a few minutes and you get married despite all the other screw ups.

LOL.

We had alot more that could go wrong with an hour but that was the best part. One of my bridesmaids made our cake, we made all of the flower arrangements (silk), I made the baskets for the bridesmaids to carry, the wedding party set up the reception hall Friday morning. We worked so hard on everything and it was so nice to just sit back and relax and enjoy it. :)

DH wants an SUV and I LOVE MY ACURA so we are looking at the Acura MDX. It is 4 WD and has the side curtain airbags. Safer for DD always trumps everything.

DH has an Integra. That is the only new car that either of us has owned. He bought it when he graduated from college in 90. I started with a 73 Nova that was borrowed from my parents for school. I bought a Tempo from a rental company with 6000 miles on it. After DS was 6 months the carseat didn't fit with anyone in the passenger seat so we found a 1990 Caravan. After DD was born we needed a car with doors on both sides in the back so we sold that & bought a 1996 Explorer. (Also chosen because it could tow the boat.) When DS started Kindergarten we were carpooling and needed to seat four kids so we bought the 1998 Town and Country. We still need the Explorer to tow...and it is great having a back up if something isn't going well with the T&C. DH usually drives his beat up Mazda 84 truck. LOL! That thing is sad! It has no radio or A/C, sometimes smokes, and the kids say that a mouse is under the hood because it squeaks. :rotfl: That thing is used for hauling the yucky stuff to the dump. The only good thing is that we haven't had a car payment since before we met 12 years ago. :)

Sis in law and MIL both have Honda Elements and love them. Also dog-friendly because you can hose off the car's floor (mud, fur, whatever) as needed. MIL & FIL do a lot of bicycling and it's easy to get the seats out of the way for the bikes.

Hey NOW!

Good Morning.

Today is like groundhog day - no better.

I'll share my comments on cars later, but I am the exception here, so my comments may not matter.

Later.

Hi Karen!
My parents will be in your neck of the woods today! They're using it as a stopping point on the way to visiting my brother & his family in CT. They'll catch up with some old friends over dinner. Go stalk them at the Hampton Inn in Mechanicsburg and tell them you'll see them on the cruise.
And, six degrees of the DIS cult: Parents will be in Karen's hometown area on their way to visit my brother, who used to work with RealMickey.

OMG!!!!! That is like the possum trying to get into the coke cans & pizza box. I thought that someone was breaking into the garage & being pretty bold about it. It took the police 45 minutes to get here though. :furious:

Thank you all for the encouraging words. What made me feel the worst was that I didn't even notice the silence in the house. I was clueless at that point that I even had a little 3 yo who normally spends 24/7 with me!!

That means that you were able to enjoy some YOU time! That is good once in a while. :thumbsup2
