Becka,
Wow.
Can you call tomorrow, get an immediate meeting with the principal/guidance counselor and work on getting his placement changed? Focus on his need for structure, consistency... and stress the allergies, that cannot be overlooked in the craziness of moving classrooms & a new teacher.

I don't want to rock the boat too much especially since DS was not one of the chosen by the other teachers. I don't want him to have a teacher that thinks I am trying to start trouble before school even starts.

We don't know if the mystery teacher will be a brand new hire, a teacher from another school or what. It may be they get someone who has some experience or it could be someone fresh out of college. Now I realize that just because a person has experience doesn't make them better than someone without but it still worries me. It is not like this teacher is going to have time to really get a lot together and if they have never taught K before I would imagine it would be very stressful for them as well. Kwim?

I think you can approach them without being viewed as an annoying boat-rocker (and they probably feel rotten about the allergy mistake, so this gives them a chance to "make it up" so to speak). And you can make it clear that it's nothing personal against/for a teacher, you are worried about the inconsistency of a classroom set up at the last minute--where allergies could be forgotten!

Becka, I agree with Marielle. I would immediately talk with the principal and get him into an established room. They may not be able to hire a teacher in a week and that class may have one or more temp teachers before they get one hired permanently. While I would not have any qualms with my children having a right out of college teacher or an old seasoned one, I think your little guy needs to have ONE teacher from day one to deal with his many allergies and his need for structure. Don't think of this as causing trouble, but rather as making his special needs known right up front.

I had to thnk you guys for letting me know what the girl on the show on Lifetime that I am watching now was talking about. She said that her mom took her to get ice cream and she had a ton of JIMMIES on it. :lmao:
WHAT?! I missed a conversation about JIMMIES (no not sprinkles)?! :scared1:

I can't believe this. We start school on 8/27 and we still do not know where the kids are going to go to school. I requested our second choice last Monday and here a week later plus a day still no letter and I can't get an answer out of the superintendent for someone to return my call. No wonder our schools are so screwed up! OY! I am prepared to with draw the kids next week so that they don't officially miss any school. Maybe I can find some one to pay to teach them for a month or two until this move thing is finished. Also while talking to a friend last night I realized that I don't have to worry about clearing out stuff to sell the house. Since this one is paid off we can completely move out and have the house clean and open to show. :) I would rather do that then stress about getting a call from a realtor that they are going to show the house in an hour and the kids have spread their toys all over the place...then where to put them. This might end up being easier than I thought it would be. :)
Okay - clearly once again I don't know what is going on. You are moving?? School starts where I live 8/30 BUT all surrounding towns are after labor day. Go figure. I need to get back to work but I think I have a lot of catching up to do on this thread.

I agree too. We had some serious problems with dd's class in 4th grade. THe teacher was pregnant and went out on leave around mid February. They hired a long term sub who was a parent of a kid in that class and she had never taught before. That and the fact that there were more than a few behavioral issues in that class was a recipe for disaster. After seeing no work come home for quite a few days, i went in and asked if dd could be moved to one of the other 4th grade classes for last quarter. After they moved her, things were much better and she thrived in the new class. I felt sorry for the other kids who didn't get moved.

WHAT?! I missed a conversation about JIMMIES (no not sprinkles)?! :scared1:

I miss Jimmies.... I haven't had any since my surgery in February. What's a custard cone with no jimmies on it? i probably could have some..just dont want to test the waters yet so to speak on surgery stuff.

Can I join in on the whining about schools when I technically still have a week before DS starts? I posted this on the CB but I guess I will post it here as well. Do you guys think I am just feeling upset for no reason just because I am new to all this?

DS starts K next Tuesday and we have all been so excited. Tonight was the Back To School Night for K students at his school. When we get there they take the kids off to the playground and out for a bus ride and the parents go to the library for an overview of the K classrooms by the K teachers. The school has two K teachers both of whom are very experienced with teaching K and who have both been with the school for a long time. Their reputations are both very good. I was feeling very good about DS's year since I knew he would have some experienced teachers.

Well we have the discussions and they go over how their classrooms are run (how they do snacks, rest time, folders, etc..) and then we find out that they have 5 more K students registered than the limit for the 2 teachers so they are going to have to hire a 3rd K teacher. They just found out about 30 minutes prior to the meeting. They don't know who it is, where they are coming from, how much experience. They don't even know what room they are going to have. This school is already really crowded and they were thinking that the new K teacher might take over the art room.

At the end of the meeting they read out the teachers for the kids and of course DS has the mystery teacher. Nathan was so excited that he was going to meet his teacher and see his classroom tonight and now he couldn't because they don't know who it will be. On top of that the teachers stood up there and said that after the screenings that happened last week they divided up the kids into who they wanted in their classes and based on parent requests. #1 I didn't know they had parent requests and #2 they just then told everyone that has the mystery teacher that their kids were not "wanted".

So now we get to wait until the school-wide Back To School Night on Thursday and they hope to have somebody hired and have them a room. On such short notice I cannot imagine what kind of teacher and how organized everything is going to be in DS's classroom. DS really does pretty well with structure and I can't imagine that at first his class is going to be all that structured.

On top of all that we go to pick up DS from the playground and I notice he has red stains on his mouth. Well they had popsicles. I asked him if he told the principal (who was the one out there with them and provided the popsicles) that he was allergic to milk and corn. Nathan said he told him several times but the principal told him it would be fine. I go to find the principal to see what popsicles he had and I find out the popsicles had corn syrup in them. The principal said that Nathan told him several times that he was allergic to milk and corn but he said he just didn't think about corn syrup. Thankfully DS does not have terrible reactions and just breaks out in a rash but still I can't believe a kid tells him he has allergies and they still hand over the food without checking with a parent or at least reading the box. The principal seems very nice and was very apologetic but after the whole mystery teacher thing I was already a bit frazzled.

So am I just new to this and overreacting? This is not exactly how I pictured sending DS off to K.

Oh Becka! I so agree with Marielle and Angie!! The allergy situation is medical - not a random thing. Also the comment about "who they want" was an bizarre comment for teachers to make. That said you are your child's advocate since they obviously considered "parents requests" just consider that you are making yours now.

Becca, it sounds to me like they handled the situation extremely poorly. :( This always happens at the old school. Funds only allow them enough for three teacers based on the number of kids enrolled. The parents here don't preregister their kids until the first week of school so even though the school KNOWS that they will have enough kids for four teachers AGAIN, the system wont let them hire them until the 2nd week of school or so. They cram all the kids in the classrooms for the first month, then take out some kids from each room for the 4th teacher. :(

LOL! Yes guys, in order to get DS into a decent school that will challenge him and he can learn something we are going to move to that district bc the stuperintendent isn't hip on the idea of approving our requests for going out of district.

Vanessa I found these in one of the tourist traps in Maggie Valley, NC and thought of you.

I just saved $310 with a code for our November trip!!! :woohoo: More spending money!!! :)

We had a fun camping trip and enjoyed seeing Aaron. We came home night before last and had a bad day yesterday. Our DD and DSIL had his mom visiting with them for a few days and yesterday DD found her dead on the bathroom floor. She was only 58 and had no apparent illness, but the police said it was apparent that she had died immediately as her hands were not out to break her fall. (maybe anuersym or stroke, hopefully autopsy will tell) Poor SIL is just distraught and DD also. They were not able to stay in their home last night and DD said she does not know how she will go back into that bathroom because she just keeps seeing the scene again. DSIL would not even go into the house at all. They stayed at our house - in the Van on Steroids - last night and are taking care of the necessary details with his brother and sisters today. We are just so sad for them. DSIL is our family "rock", but yesterday he was just a mess and allowed Dennis and I to just take care of him. This is so out of character for him. DGD was with me when I got the call from DD so I had to share the news with her I called Dennis to come from work, then went to their house and turned DGD and DSIL over to Dennis to take to our house while I stayed to help DD deal with the police, mortuary and such. Sad, sad, sad. We had 12 or so of DSIL's family over for dinner last night so they could be together and grieve a bit. We just feel so helpless and don't know how to make it better.

Thank you for listening.
