12/09/06 Cruise Continued ~ Pirating Bananas DIS Geekorama Part 2 Part 16

Portraits yes ......weddings no. I can't handle the drama. :headache:

My dream would be to make a living doing the kind of photography Ansel Adams did. :cloud9:

I wonder how much a digital 8 x 10 back would be for a Deardorf or Wista view camera. hmmmmm???? I do have a 5 x 7 Speed Graphic, film holders, tanks, film carriers, etc. ,and an old 5 x 7 enlarger. I never use them though. No darkroom anymore. That kind of photography is the ultimate, but very expensive to get into. Whew. One good 90mm lens costs more than my camera and lens put together. Then, a Good view camera is $$$$$. YIKES. I do have some wide format work I have done. One of my architectural photos was published in Photographers Forum many years ago. Ah, the good old days.

I've had Sprint for about a year now and have been pretty happy with it (except for a problem with porting our #s over at the beginning).

I have a Palm Treo... not quite an iPhone but very useful all the same. The Sprint data plan is only $15/month and I get all my email and internet access remotely that way :)

I love my Treo 700P. It's what I am using now to get online with my laptop,

A few more random pictures from our vacation last month.

Great pics Becka. Thanks for sharing those. It's neat seeing the kids grow.

Hey everyone! Just catching up now. Crazy week again! My washing machine broke, and then the basement flooded. Lucky for me I have the disaster recovery company on speed dial. The insurance adjuster has been here and they have taken the walls down. The carpet is coming out tommorow and the furniture is either going to a repair specialist or being totalled by the insurance company. It did not seem as bad as our last flood, but apparently it was.

It sounds like a real bummer, but Steve and I have been through this so much we are getting really good at it and we NEVER fight about the big stuff. Weird huh!

Hi Kim !

:grouphug:

Becka, take a look at Photoshop Elements 6.0 for mac. There will be a trial on the Adobe site, very soon.

PJ

Hi PJ,

I love Elements (even on a PC). Especially for one on a budget. I would like CS3, but will have to wait until I upgrade my computer status. I need more Memory and more power. Mine has enough ooomph now, but just minimal, so I don't have room for all of my pics, etc. I am going to buy a 2 TB storage unit as soon as I can, after we sell this place. OOH OOH. pssst...don't tell the Mrs. ROTFLOL !

I am only planning to do it on the side, and for fun. I just like to create portraits that make people smile.

I like Ansel Adams too, but in general, I am not much into landscape photography. I don't feel like I have an eye for that kind of stuff.

Joy,
I would love to hear about your Portrait Photography business. Do you have a studio now? Wow. Cool. I used to do that part time and I have a bunch of studio gear packed away. That is my favorite area of photography. I love working with the lights. I have 4 White Lightening monolights and about 10 stands, backdrop stands and a bunch of backgrounds, etc. I wanted an RZ 67, but too expensive for me back then.

Have you heard of Charles J Lewis ? I have his whole course. Anyway, I am excited for you. It is a fun business, and very rewarding if you work too. Taking oictures isn't really work for me. The books and business management was work. LOL.

Angie says I can make you a real deal on some of my stuff. LOL. Well, Maybe....?? It is hard to part with it. She thinks it is extra baggage right now. LOL.

No studio. I plan to use natural light and focus on outdoor location photography. I would like to get a backdrop stand and backdrops eventually, and some lighting, for those days in wintertime when we can't go outdoors... but even then, as long as we can move some furniture around in the house and get near a big enough window, it should be okay.

I have not heard of Charles J Lewis. I am still just learning and building a portfolio. I am going to a seminar next month with Ed Pierce (Captivated by the Light). The books and business management are the easy part for me. Learning about the light and the exposure are challenging, but ever since it clicked for me (such an a-ha moment!), I have been a fiend to try new and different things and the kids are just DONE with posing for me because they are tired of it.

If you really are serious about getting rid of you stuff, send me a list of what you have... I will see if I can invest some more money into it. I am saving up for a 40D too.

Do you think I could contract with a few of you to shoot your next cruise? and then I'd have to write that off as a business expense right? With my 3 assistants in tow? :)

Available light photography is great. It really sharpens your skills. Then it becomes easy, using the sunny 16 rule, etc., to be able to judge light, even without a meter., although a meter reading is always best. Digital is a new learning curve for me, but I really like my Canon 40D. I am still keeping my film cameras, but hope I will be able to still use them in the future. I am worried about film and stuff. I like the Kodak Portra films for portrait work, so hope they will still be available.
All you willl need is a couple of good reflectors, and an assistant or a stand for them. It is exciting stuff.

The contract idea sounds interesting. I would be open for that. Let me know the deatails. I plan on doing a lot of shooting anyway, but assignments are more challenging.

Dennis, awesome photos!

Joy, I think it is great that you are going to be able to share something that gives you such happiness.

Pj

Fantastic pictures Dennis! You really have a great eye to get some of those shots. I only wish I could do 5% as well.

Joy - We are on the cruise with you in December and I love nice pictures... :scratchin

And with this pirate pirate: I would like to present Allie's birthday cake. I baked the cakes last night over a couple of hours and spent a couple of hours tonight decorating. It was a very interesting experience. Here is the final product.
