$100 challenge

Whenever I have the opportunity to go to disney, even on a budget, I go. I am a DVC member, too, and have spent less than $120 for food for 5 nights before, without even trying. My daughter is currently working at Disney World, and she eats at Earl of Sandwich all the time. When I go visit her, we always eat there at least once. She and I usually split a sald($5.95) and a sandwich($5.75), and we both usually drink water anyway. If I treat one of her friends to a sandwich and soda, we still spend less than $20. I once overheard a British couple placing their order for a tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. Apparently, the grilled cheese is a child's sandwich, so it was only $4. The Earl is definitely Disney's best food value. Everyone I've ever taken there has loved it! I ordered the child's quesadilla at the counter service in Mexico for my neice, and my own 15-year-old wanted one after that. When we eat there, I usually order a few different things, and we all share. You could easily eat here for less than $20, as long as you don't order a margarita;). My husband and I used to share the shwarma platter at Tangerine Cafe, but my daughter is not a fan. She does like Cosmic Ray's, where we share the 1/2 rotisserie chicken with green beans. I sometimes add the child's salad with chicken, and we either drink water or order a child's small soda. We have shared a chicken wrap and salad(without the chicken is less than $5) at Pecos Bill's before for very little money. My youngest daughter usually does not eat hot dogs, but she loves the footlong hotdog and french fry combo they sell at a cart on the Boardwalk. I think it is @$8, and she and I share it, then head over to the bakery for a dessert. I think you will be able to eat for $100.
We usually drive down, but once my husband and I and 2 youngest children had an opportunity to go for a long weekend, as long as we kept the trip cost to a minimum because we flew down(on SWA). I was worried because I had never been without a car. We stayed in a 1-bedroom at OKW, and I packed bagels, oatmeal packs, peanut butter, a small bottle of mustard,12 bottled waters and 12 20-oz. Cokes in our luggage(my kids did not even know they were in their suitcases). I made sure I bagged everything in case of spills, but everything was fine when we arrived. My husband laughed at me, but he sure enjoyed the bottled water and soda that did not cost $2 each! Had we run out of soda, I read on this board that the Hess station is a good place to buy drinks and snacks, and you can take a bus to downtown Disney to get to it.I packed snacks and fruit(apples and bananas) in my carry-on. At the general store at OKW, we purchased ham and bread for sandwiches, eggs, cheese, and milk. We made one dining reservation('Ohana), and ate counter service the rest of the time. I saved a lot of money by packing a few things in my luggage, but I would not do that if I had to pay a fee for extra baggage. Luckily, we can do laundry while at Disney, and less clothes means more room for other things! I hope you have a great birthday trip!

we usally order Papa Johns a couple times while at disney.. just have the phone number with you and order while you are on the way back to your resort on the bus and then they will be there waiting on you when you get back! perfect under or around 20

We do this too since we didn't care for the resort pizza. Don't forget your coupons! :)

We always bring snacks with us and one of our favorite snacks is Pringles. I don't ever buy them at home so they are a treat and they don't get crushed in the carryon. :goodvibes

if you are staying at a disney hotel, they give you a meal voucher for planet hollywood for $15. last sept. myself and dd ordered a turkey club and a huge cheese burger. both came w/ fries and the portions were large. i think after the vouchers the bill came to $10 inc. tip. that might be an option.

another idea is to go during free dining. then meals would not be an issue at all and you can spend the $ on something else.

Thanks for the great tips. Shopping today, leaving tomorrow :cool1:
Just curious which is the closest Papa Johns to BCV's?

You might want to consider going to one of the off-site buffets one evening in the middle of your trip if you are going to have a car. I know there a Cici's pizza, Golden Corral, and other close by. These can be under $10 a piece especially if you get a coupon booklet from the airport or one of the stands in the area.

Here's my shopping list...am i forgetting anything:

Breakfast: Oatmeal, cereal bars, ?oranges
Lunch: Bagels with Tuna/mayo, PB&J, Earl of Sandwich
Dinner: out at the many suggested places, birthday night at Canada with Disney card points
Snacks: Popcorn, 100cal snacks, florida nuggets, Celery/carrots, GORP
Water is being delivered, fruit will be purchased in park or food court.

Pretty simple but should be fine. I'm sure they'll be the occassional mickey bar in the afternoon :thumbsup2

Make sure you pack the mayo and PB&J in your checked luggage. Anything that can be poured or spread cannot be put in carryons.

Also, I believe you cannot take oranges into Florida as they may bring unwelcome fruit diseases. You can eat them on the plane but they cannot enter the airport once you land.

Bring everything possible with you to make in the room or take into the park. This will save you a bundle! Do not plan to eat at restaurants. Do plan a menu of some sort with everything you will have to eat. This will eliminate being tempted to buy extras and going over your budget. If you will have a car, go to Walmart or Winn Dixie. If you won't have a car, go ahead and use wegoshop.com to deliver food. For drinks, put some juice mix on your list. You can mix it with water for flavoring. You can do it! :goodvibes I will be interested to see how you budget things. :wizard:

DAY 1 - Got to Disney just about dinner time, we were getting pretty hungry.
Well check in didn't go exactly as planned. We were supposed to have a savannah room at the new Kidani villas and they were oversold so we had an option to upgrade to Conceirge or accept a studio/no savannah room with a cash rebate. We chose the rebate, so that will help our food budget but I am still trying to stick to our orginal budget (other family members aren't quite so determined :confused3).
So dinner tonight was $10 each. We went to Earl of Sandwich, I got a cup of soup $3 and a kids pizza sandwhich $4 and hubby got an "Original" sandwich $6 and chips $1.25, plus we did get the AAA discount (20%). Then we did some shopping and went to Ghiradelli $5.50 for DH and $6 for me minus AP discount.
Bad thing was I forgot everything that was in the fridge before we left: bagels, celery and carrots :-( So we had to pick up bagels in the gift shop. Still $4 for 6 bagels is better than $2.30 for ONE!
I'll check in tomorrow evening and let you know how we did. Just glad to be here :yay:

No way I would have not taken the Coneirge. Free breakfast and snacks and dinner foods and I've always wanted to stay club level and never have. Have a great trip and enjoy!

I think you could do a really interesting food report after your trip! Don't forget to register your birthday and consider getting the gift card (is it $75??) that I believe you can also use for food/snacks.

Also, bagels make a hearty, quick breakfast or snack.

Happy travels and let us know how it goes!

I didn't read the whole thread so I'm sorry if someone already said this. The birthday gift card can not be used for food except in a store like Goofy's candy shop.

Conceirge would have been nice but we were only there for one night and then moved to BCV. I'd have taken club level if it were for the whole stay,
I've never stayed that way either.

i called SWA and they mentioned that u can pack up pretty much anything in your checked luggage. They however did not recommend packing peanut butter because of the whole security thing. I'm also be packing some snacks and juices in a small luggage. This will be great cuz my husband is coming back a couple of day early then we are and he can bring back this back with his clothes in it or it could be used for souvenirs.

:cool1: 15 days left

My first thought was the double burger with extra bun. I saw that tip but then I thought, if you are bringing extra snacks, why not bring that extra bun too! A cheap meal in Disney is better than a great meal at home! :)

We stayed on track yesterday too :goodvibes. Breakfast bars in room, swam in Kidani DVC pool..awesome! Lunch on the porch, watching animals was
Tuna on bagels w pickles prepared in room, snack pouch items for dessert.
Dinner was only out of pocket costs again:
We were at EPCOT so went to China and had the shrimp fried rice/egg roll combo $8@ so we are under budget as we opted out of dessert this night, we were going to have Gelado at BCV ($2.49@) similar gelado in park was $5@.
That dinner at China is very filling.
My dh did splurge on a soda mug ($14) as our water still is not here :confused3 I didn't account for the holiday, Costco should deliver today.

One thing is that we both do have healthy appetites and I wonder when people say they split things and it's enough if it's because they are full from
other things they've eaten during the day? I will try to bring little snack bars and snack items (raisins etc) that pack well from home for between meal snacks.

Be careful here. I often split things - particularly when I travel with my mother who is also a little eater. Yesterday for lunch my kids both had a six inch sandwich - my lunch with the tomatos from their sandwich, the sprouts from my son's sandwich, and a little ham from my daughters (I'm gluten intolerant so I can't eat the bread). Two sips from my daughter's pop and two from my son's. And I was pretty full until three. For breakfast I'd had a cup of coffee.

Some of us split things and do fine because we have little appetites. I'm not a huge snacker either. And don't forget that the box of raisins adds to your total for the day.

OK so BIG ALERT! I got my water delivered today from Costco BUT
when it arrived it was "lost" and then found at the conference center
even though I had the correct address. And then they said I had to
pay $5 delivery charge!!!:scared1: I refused as I was not notified prior that
I would need to pay this. :headache: They did waive the charge as I flat out
refused to pay it but everyone should be aware of this.
