10 digit or 7 digit dialing

When we lived in PA we had 10 digit dialing. Moved 3 miles, but across the river into NJ, and now have 7 digit. Since we live close to another area code there are even places in that area code that we don't have to use 10 digits. I thought that was a little weird.

We are 7 in California. I thought 10 digit was only for dialing outside of your area code.

ditto.

So even if you're calling within your own area code, you must dial the area code too? We have around 5 area codes here in the Bay Area. I don't find it to be a problem to dial the area code when I need to, but within the same area code?

(lordy - ya think I said "area code" enough?!)

Yes. With 10 digit dialing you dial the area code even with you're calling within the area code.

7 in Montana - all one area code. I know some really small towns a few years ago only had 4 digit dialing.

7 within NH...but growing up, it was just 4 in the local area.

7 digits in Nashville, although some of the very outlying suburbs have a different area code so for those it would be 10 digits.

My DH lived in Atlanta 11 years ago and it was 10 digits even back then.
